Tales from the Recruiter Crypt

Tales from the Crypt Tale #1 – All hope is LOST

I receive a phone call from my client; my candidate has yet to arrive for her 12pm interview. It is now 12:13pm. I immediately call the candidate, only to get her voicemail. Maybe I didn’t provide the correct details for the interview, or maybe she had an emergency that prevented her from coming to the interview. Why didn’t she answer her phone? After a few agonizing minutes the client calls to inform me that the candidate had gotten… Continue

Kids are the Best Teachers

By Pat Meehan

Today I completed two days of participating in "Earth Day." This was something I was asked to do in Spencer County, Indiana as a service to pre-school, 1st grade and 2nd grade kids (about 500 in all). The…

What hiring managers & recruiters can learn from buying a car

I recently bought a used car, and the buying experience got me thinking about how it compares to the decision a hiring manager makes to employ a new MBA or masters graduate. Both decisions involve purchases of expensive items where the up-front cost represents just a small portion of the lifetime cost of the decision. Yet despite the similarities, the decision-making process is typically very different.

When you go to a dealership to look at a used car, you typically get…

Bad day? Boring job? Suck it up! Your customers will care less than I do

Driving into the carpark outside of my office today, I noticed something that as an employer or manager would really annoy me. This carpark has "early bird" prices, you know, in before a certain time, out after another prescribed time, for a cheaper rate. However to validate for this you need to get another ticket from the attendant. Not sure if that is the right term, as the word "attendant" to me gives me the idea of attentiveness. This particular character has none of that. He has himself… Continue

The Case for Recruiters in Today's Economy

So it's not the best of times - economically speaking.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that recruiters have hit hard times. But there are a number of significant developments that should encourage recruiters. (See the blue "hires" line from last month in the otherwise dire graph from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The BLS released several positive…

How Are We Doing - Feedback Slips for Your Employees

ORIGINAL POST URL: http://hrgirl411.typepad.com/blog/2010/05/how-are-we-doing-comment-cards-for-your-employees.html

Many companies offer a feedback slip to it's customers in order for them to receive critical feedback whether it be good or bad, in order for the company to monitor it's customers' satisfaction. Likewise, feedback should be an assurance that…

Submitting a "known" candidate to your client.

A battle since the beginning of time but what are your thoughts on submission of a candidate to your client that claims to "know" them already but hasn't spoken to them in the last couple years more importantly they are in your clients LinkedIn "Rolodex" but they fail to contact them for the current opening we're both trying to fill.

I will use this as an example...

After identifying a solid candidate for my client, I ask the candidate prior to submittal, (as I do all my… Continue

Twitter Bug: Size of the Vessel or Motion in the Ocean

I’m not keeping score, but apparently a lot of folks in the Twitterverse are. After hacker’s found a way to exploit Twitter into forcing anyone to follow them, Twitter responded to the bug by temporarily resetting all following and follower counts to zero until they could sort things out. For an official overview of the situation, check out Twitter’s blog post.…

Recruiters, this is what competition in our industry really means

For all my blog posts please see 'The Savage Truth'

Last week I blogged on why so many recruiters have a shallow understanding of what ‘competitive’ in our business actually means.

And so how do we thrive in a competitive world? What is the way to differentiate in 2010 and…

Shouldn’t HR be able to recruit their own people?

A couple of days ago a Twitter acquaintance of mine Ellison Bloomfield posted in her blog the rhetorical question; shouldn’t an internal HR department have the skills and knowledge to be able to recruit their own people?

Good question. Even though it was rhetorical, I’m going to answer it anyway as it’s a pet topic of mine. My view is this; recruitment AND selection… Continue

Why Won’t You Hire Me? (Part 1)

Screaming at Laptop “You have an open position and I’ve applied, why won’t you hire me”? I’m sure most recruiters have had this conversation before. The possible answers are endless. Let’s start with one: your resume.

My first recommendation to a candidate in the day and age of online job applications is; you MUST submit a… Continue

3 Legs to Sales Success

Have you ever heard the following?

My sales reps can’t sell. They don’t prospect for new business. They can’t close. They don’t seem motivated to earn more money.

When I hear these comments from business owners, I ask 3 simple questions.

1) Do you have the right sales people?

2) Do you provide the right sales training?

3) Do you have the right sales management?

It takes all three…

RECRUITERS BEHAVING BADLY: Does somebody need a time out?

By Nanci Lamborn, SPHR and BrightMove Recruiting Software

When we were all somewhere between the ages of 3 and 7 years old or so, we began to recognize the difference between unintentional sins of omission or negligence and the intentional choice to do whatever we jolly well pleased. What spirited adult doesn’t recall at least a small block of time from a childhood of headstrong precociousness being spent in the dreaded time-out chair? I…

Results from the 2010 job board industry survey

A few weeks back I asked you to help with a job board industry survey – and you did! You answered questions about the effect of the recession on your job sites, threats to your business – and your thoughts about the future of the industry. So first and foremost, thanks!

I received 94 completed responses – which gives me considerable confidence in the results. A wide range of job sites participated, ranging in revenues from less than $500,000 to more than $10 million. Each size… Continue
