Resume Verification - Don’t Be Fooled By A Smooth Talker

It’s a well known fact that some people lie on their resumes. There are plenty of statistics around that show the percentages. Some people embellish a little, some embellish a lot, and some outright lie. Most of the time, that lie is about their education. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, one in four candidates misrepresents his or her educational attainment. If someone lies on their resume, how can you trust them as an employee?

I can remember several…

Will rejected candidates defend your employment brand?

Let’s face it, not every prospective candidate who applies will be selected for a job opening. However, the way in which your organization treats each applicant during the recruiting process may determine whether or not your employment brand can continue to attract top candidates.

Why Do So Many Business Owners Dread Hiring Employees?

The answer may be simpler than one would expect: humans don’t like doing things that they are not great at, especially if there are grave consequences when executed poorly.

Hiring can make or break any business. This is especially true with small and medium-sized businesses. In general, most people are not very good at hiring employees. In fact, according to…

Why unpaid student internships are usually a bad idea

At 31Projects (www.31projects.com), we strongly support the principal that students should be paid fairly for the value they create for organizations. Even though money is typically not students’ primary motivation for participating in projects, we ensure that project sponsors compensate students fairly for the time and effort the students put into their project.

There’s been a decent amount of discussion in the press lately…

Why do people stay at the same job?

I am always curious what makes someone stay in the same job for more than a few years. For me, it is passion, challenge, and the chance to be rewarded for being very good at what I do. That is why I run an agency, and that is why I like what I do. But I have to trade off team work (sometimes I am solo, sometimes I am not), and financial security (can you say 2009??), and I cannot easily specialize in one piece of the puzzle. That last one makes me tired some days.

But enough about me,… Continue

Unemployed? Move Along...Nothing To See Here.

This recent trend has me perplexed -the trend towards including exclusionary wording on job postings which state in various forms: “The unemployed need not apply.”

Laura Bassett reported this recently on Huffington Post in her post titled: Disturbing Job Ads: The UnemployedWill Not Be Considered. She outs a… Continue

Winning With Words: Recruitment insights for Search Engine Marketing

Recruiters face a daunting challenge: how do we find and attract top talent in an age of information overload? Now that we have ready access to massive databases and information streams, some might think being a headhunter is a breeze. But they’d be wrong. While data and scale make some activities easier, they also create an environment where incremental… Continue

This is Why Baseball is Still Relevant

For many people, sport is all about winning. The obsession with wins and losses obscures the real importance of the game. For me, sport is about bringing the best out in people and transferring these lessons to everyday life. And since Recruitment Process Outsourcing is part of my everyday life, I can use sports to help me be better at my vocation.

Last Wednesday was a “perfect” example.

With two outs in the 9th inning… Continue

Jobseekers, are you really available?

Greg Savage wrote a blog post today about one of his pet peeves, people being late. Read it here. It's called No, you are not 'running late', you are rude and selfish

This is my turn.. Jobseekers, hear this. Yes there is a skills shortage. Yes, your services are required. However, don't expect everyone (ie all employers) to bend over backwards for you. No… Continue

Fundamental changes…or tempests in teapots?

People get bored. This is the number one reason that anything ‘new and shiny’ captures our attention. We get frustrated that what we’re doing is, well, kind of repetitive and doesn’t work the way

we imagined it would. Then something new comes along

and we think: Maybe this time things will be different! Maybe

that software will really work. Maybe this really is the

magic bullet
.

Or, maybe…

How to Make a Career Change

It is NEVER too late for a career change! Sure, you might not have direct experience in a certain industry or job, but you need to prove to any hiring manager that your existing skills are, in fact, transferable skills.

If you’re debating about making a career change, don’t be afraid. Even if a career switch later in life seems like a completely radical change with many possible consequences attached to it, you should still go for it if it’s something you really…

New Technology or Old Human Nature?

By Pat Meehan

In our quest to find the answers or connections that bond us, each of us, we seek to the world of high tech and the global social network. What do we find in this quest? We find the feel of the winter, summer, spring and fall. We connect through the common vision of the moon and the stars. We feel closer to those in other…
