MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Classroom Chat Log Tuesday, April 21, 2009

We tried to have our regular MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Class Chat this week and we thought (Animal and I) that there was an Archive being automatically created with Chatroll but alas! There wasn't. This is the last part of the chat we were able to get copied once we came to to what was happening to the chat. The early part of the class was good with participation from several people. I'm sorry that part is lost. Following is the log that represents… Continue

Enough Negative News

Enough Negative News

Don Schmitz / Human Resource Staffing

The news focuses on gloom and doom and I’ve heard enough negatives. So let’s add a bit of healthy skepticism to counter all the negative forces. Where can we expect the new jobs to come from in the future? With unemployment in Minnesota at 6% and national unemployment of 6.5% sure to go higher, everyone wonders, “Will I have a job tomorrow?”

According to the state of Minnesota, the medical device sector… Continue

Social Networking websites and a successful job search

Networking is about more than going to Chamber of Commerce

meetings in the Internet era

Social networking Web sites aren’t just about looking up old high school crushes or telling everyone you know what you had for breakfast.

Whether you use a business-oriented site such as LinkedIn or a network such as Facebook that’s designed more for fun, online social networking can help you find a job.

There are lots of people on social networking sites who are looking… Continue

I got a new job! Oh, I have to tell them I’m quitting this one?

resign That euphoric feeling of accepting a new position can quickly leave when you start to think about the prospect of having to go to your current boss and give notice. Mostly because you probably have a decent relationship with she or he and your co-workers, so it will be a bittersweet departure. Even if you absolutely despise everything about your job, it still can be tough.

The best way to approach… Continue

A Warm Cold Call for the Passive Candidate

I have never liked the phrase Cold Call. When I was trained to become a Recruiter, we learned to use the phrase Warm Call. Well, after all, that is what the inititial call is isn't it? If the call is cold you will, well be cold. The candidate or client for that matter will be cold. It is really that simple. I don't need any "guru" to tell me differently.

I was recently interviewed on the @Animal Radio Show http://… Continue

The Essence of Ethics

Late at night...no one around for miles - and yet you stop at the red light and wait. Why? You stop because it's the ethical thing to do. We trust each other to stop, whether or not anyone is watching. You could say that trust is the outcome of ethical behavior.

It's difficult to define, exactly, what ethical behavior is; and it's impossible to measure. But we can sense when ethics are present in an individual or a company culture - and especially we sense it when they're not.… Continue

Creating Value versus Recruiting Greed

Like in most sectors of the economy recruiters are sometimes subject to greed in their desire to make a quick buck (placement) and run, having little or no consideration for the impact of their actions on the life of the candidate or the success of the client company. Of course, the majority of recruiters do not fall into this category and we generally got into this field to make money and not become saints. Well, maybe not all of us.

Recruiters at quasi-ethical or unethical firms… Continue

Pet smart - maybe - but not much more

A few hours ago I stopped in to PetSmart to pick up a few pet items. The total came to $12.42; I pulled $15 out my wallet, counted out 42 cents, and handed the currency to the cashier - who in the transfer, dropped one penny onto the floor. She attempted to bend over to pick it up but didn't.

I turned away for about four seconds and she handed me $2.99 in change; the receipt noted that I gave her $15.41. I took the two dollar bills in my right… Continue

How NOT to get me to work with you.

Just a quick note about how NOT to get an HR Director to work with you. Send an email like this:

"Most recruiters who were calling you last year are no longer around; but you, the hiring manger, and I, a recruiter, are survivors and still here! I would love to take 20 minutes of your time to learn about how I can recruit FOR you rather than FROM you."

Don't threaten that if I dont work with you, that you'll recruit from me. To me that's just a challenge. Bring it.

Overworking to look Good

Over time it has become apparent in reading and listening to people within organizations that a sense or lack of manager care is constant in the work place. Management, both executive and supervisory, are pressed with the bottom line offering little consciousness of the impact. Expecting more and demanding more, employees become less and less engaged. They work endless hours to serve “the man” just in the hopes that they will keep their job in the sliding economy. The downward pressure… Continue

Community managers and the evolution of the recruiting function

i_team_peopleperson The idea of a community manager isn’t unique to the recruiting function. The term is borrowed from the consumer world and emerged with the influence social media is exerting on brand engagement and reputation. While the role is still relatively new, companies have begun to realize the potential to attract, engage, nurture, retain and expand their customer / client base beyond traditional marketing and PR. Its about creating brand value through experiential engagement and listening… Continue

love hate think believe feel wish

I just finished reading this article entitled, Let Them Eat Tweets and like the author, I too can't help but think that social media is sucking users into a vortex whose pull and power from which they can never escape. My Dog Ate My Cell Phone & Other Nifty Excuses Why NOT to be Successful

With all the talk of recession, depression, and obsession with how 'bad it is' it is tough for most people to keep their thoughts positive. Personal Empowerment begins with making a choice to be grateful, optimistic and committed to the present and the future as a possibility. Happiness is a choice and it's a choice we all must make daily, if not hourly.

Last March with recession looming in the background I chose to forge forward with launching… Continue
