Having spent the last nine months building our Recruiting CRM application to interface with many different systems I've been given the unique opportunity to look inside many different HR and recruiting software applications commercially available on the market. I've also had the chance to respond to many RFP's, RFI's, and product bake-offs with competitors. I'm continually blown away at how poorly designed many of these applications are from a users perspective (but not entirely surprised given…

Hi,
Thursday’s MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Class Chat was a great success! We had about twenty people show up on pretty short notice including Shally Steckerl and Glenn Gutmacher to give us some great advice regarding LinkedIn’s most recent (and some hints at coming!) changes. You can read through the Class Log
here.
There's some great new content posted on the MagicMethod site that you might find interesting. Among…

Wow... what a night.
A night of mayhem, madness, excitement, order and anarchy, and let's not forget, pride and fun and smiles.
That was my night tonight. I attended my son's first football club meeting, in the form of a jumper presentation and pie night (A great Aussie tradition). It was Zach's first involvement in a footy club, and his excitement all…

Eric Clemons, professor of operations and information management at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, drew some fire with his
argument that the Internet shatters all forms of advertising. Enough so that he updated his post in an attempt to quell the criticism (or perhaps fan the flames) on TechCrunch, telling people how to properly frame their rebuts, ridiculing them for how they…

One of my
MAJOR pet peeves is abuse of email. Way too often, email is used as a passive aggressive way of spouting off. The sender wants to tell you something, but they really don’t want to hear what you think, because if they did they would have called you and
SPOKEN to you. Don’t get me wrong, I think email is a great communication tool - when used properly.
So, today I am going to share my
“3 email rule” with you in the hope that I can do my small part to…

I've been researching social media for my recruitment team. Last year we implemented an ats (Taleo) and now that we have such an awesome tool I think our recruiters are ready and eager to jump into the world of recruitment technology.
I am our Taleo System Administrator so it seemed like a natural project for me to accept - with the help of my good friend and colleague.
We've been exploring tools that both of us use for personal reasons (Myspace, Facebook, Bloggings) and…

As with negotiating salaries, negotiating a raise also requires preparation and organization of how you are going to go about it.
Find out about the company policy
Different companies have different policies regarding salary increments depending on the amount and the time of the year. Do your homework and be well prepared for the interview.
Read the Salary Survey Report
A Salary Survey Report will provide you the current value of your job which will help in the…

We're all reading about massive layoffs and cost cutting measures but are companies really getting it right? I don't think so. It seems that HR Leadership (oxymoron?) is still making the "easy" decision regarding their talent inventory, that being Last In First Out (LIFO). Severance packages will be less and they don't have to deal with uncomfortable dismissal discussions with tenured employees. This is very short sighted and while they can stand up in front of their executive team and say "we…

I'm really looking forward to seeing how things evolve with Splits.org and Twitter along with other aspects that may tie in with them. As an interested observer who does a lot of splits, I think the idea and effort behind this so far is innovative and has a ton of potential. For me, splits have always been a relationship thing. You connect with someone and work together a little bit and as the trust and comfort level strengthens you are able to do business together profitably. On the other…

From somewhere on the Internet, I saw these questions; I think they hold potential:
Which of the "Facts of Life" girls are you most like?
If you were a deodorant, would you be a roll-on, stick, or spray?
Do you prefer Emanuel Lewis or Gary Coleman?
Would you rather have ebola or smallpox?
Would you rather have bamboo shoved under your nails, Chinese water torture, or your ankles chewed off by a pack of wild dogs?
If you were a…

Salary discussions with a prospective employer are at best uncomfortable, so I am going to talk about how to maintain the advantage in these interactions. Since this is fairly complex, I am breaking this into 2 posts. One to discuss how to prepare, and the other to help you through the actual discussion.
Ken from Massachusetts asks how to respond when an potential employer asks what compensation he is looking for. He was thinking his default would…

I have been a recruiter now for almost 10 years now. I started out in a hiring manager role and then moved into general IT staffing. From there I moved into more of a niche field of recruiting. In my years I have always maintained a certain "method to my madness". This method consisted of sourcing candidates, qualifying them and placing them into what I would consider is my pipeline. These were always people that I have placed on positions and people that I WANT to place on positions. This…
