Alexa Changes Algorithm; Readjusts Blog Evaluations

I've never been a big fan of social media measures, but other people like them. "That's the best we have," people tell me.

Alexa, for example, is a longtime favorite for people to gage traffic, despite its obvious and admitted shortcomings. Some bloggers have even taken to using it as a valuation in order to determine ad rates. Maybe not any longer. Alexa changed its algorithm and plenty of people are cheering and weeping. Me, I'm just laughing because I had doubts (and still do)… Continue

Turning the Tables: Digging Dirt on Employers

Employers need to watch out! The same tools that they’re using to screen applicants can just as easily be used by applicants to screen them.

Another great search engine.

So we all have used Google, Yahoo!, and some of us have even used Microsoft Live and Lycos. Well one search engine in particular has become a favorite of mine and that is Exalead (www.exalead.com). What I like about Exalead is its preview function. It allows you view the document in an HTML format with all the search criteria highlighted. If you click on the highlighted text at the top, it will automatically take you to where the word is located in the document. Then when you are done, with… Continue

Communication 101 - Information exchage

Communication: \kə-myü-nə-kā-shən\ - a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system

I think that we’ve all heard how email communications are a poor substitute for speaking on the phone, and that most of us believe that since the aspect of understanding someone’s emotions or sense of humor is just so tough.

However, I’m not here to complain about misunderstandings that email creates (deal with people). I’m here to talk about how the… Continue

How To Keep Going During A Slump

Everyone depends on you. Your sales efforts impact everyone. Without them, everything stops.

That’s how important you are to your company and the people in it.

Each sales week and month, you and your team will almost certainly be presented with sales challenges and periods of time that test your resolve to make the next call and, in some extreme cases, even question your career choice.

Perhaps this happens more for those of us in Recruiting and Sales because our… Continue

Job Board Widget Review: AllTheTopBananasPosted by Julian Stopps on April 17, 2008 at 5:52am

We kick start our review of job board widgets this week with the AllTheTopBananas widget.

AllTheTopBananas, the name says it all: bouncy, energetic and not too serious. It’s a young site and full of innovation, so it comes as no surprise that it was one of the earliest sites to release a job widget.

"I need a hero..."

Yes, just like that chick in Footloose, I need a hero.

I'm not talking about one that "has to be strong and has to be fast, and has to be fresh from the fight... "(thank you Bonnie Tyler)

I'd take a slightly geeky one who likes Star Trek, D&D and can write software using ASP.NET, C# and SQL code in an enterprise environment. Dancing is optional.

Active vs. Passive Candidates

I was reading a blog earlier this morning on ERE.net that got me fired up. The writer, Sam Medalie, hits the nail right on the head. The point is, as Recruiters, we have to seek out the right candidates (passive, active, whatever want to call them) regardless what their current work status might be. It means we have to be vigilant in the resources we are using and, more… Continue

New Job boards - are they a front for massive ID theft?

This post started out as a flippant remark made to someone yesterday, but it made me think further.

There seems to have been another influx of new job boards coming into the already crowded space recently. My question is simple and worrying at the same time. What would stop a foreign owner (doesn't have to be foreign of course) setting up a job board? Then building up a database of CV's quickly, with some fancy promises, only to disappear to 'farm' all the personal information they have… Continue

Courageous Careering - Story #1

I really enjoy discovering stories about people who completely change their lives. I admire people who make a plan and stick to it in order to make it happen. That is a fundamental philosophy of this blog…to career courageously through life and to not let people tell you that you can’t do something. As I come across stories like this, I will post them here. We can all learn from each other’s experience.

I found this excellent… Continue

Wednesday Wisdom: Hair of the Dog

Claudia,

If a candidate is very hairy on the chest and back, should they just shave right down every day to below their collar line?

Tax day...I filed on time this year!!!

Last year wasn't a fluke for me...I did it again...I filed my taxes on time this year! This may not seem like a great feat, but I used to be notorious for procrastinating on my taxes and filing an extension.

What's been the difference for me, you ask? Well, I got married in 2005 and my wife was not about to let me procrastinate and let the government keep our refund (yes we got one again, which means I need to adjust my W4...). My wife holds me accountable and I love her for it… Continue
