In need of a lifeline!!!!!

This is a tough post to write, but one I will do regardless because I am at the end of my rope.   I am a 10+ year veteran of the recruiting wars.  I spent all my time in the agencies of New York City recruiting technologists.  7 of those years were with a consulting firm where I was top dog with 50+ people on billing.  I never thought about the future, or changes because I was content making a lot of money.  In 2009, that all changed.  The market as we know started going south, and I started…

Who Forgot about Potential?

People are the tools that make companies work. A great and smart bunch will contribute in moving a company forwards, generate profits and have them re-invested wherever necessary to create more opportunities, while a less skilled group might keep a company afloat without issue, but at a stagnant level. So isn’t it in everyone’s best interest to hire great quality staff to make companies thrive?

The truth of the matter is that…

The Secret To Cold-Calling

Ever seen those training providers that promise to help you unlock the secrets to cold-calling?

Most of the time this “secret” turns out to be something inane like sounding really happy when you make the call or only doing it when the sun’s shining.

What seems to drive of most of the recruitment sales training I’ve ever seen is the fact that cold-calling is an omnipresent part of a recruiter’s life - and so they had better get good at it.

Frankly, I think that’s…

Responsibility- Or is it Response Ability #sourcing, #conduct, #socialinteraction, #thedanieljsmith

Tuesday after a long weekend, and I hope today, all is well. One of the more interesting things about long weekends (besides the copious amounts of food!) is that it allows most of us to hit the cosmic "reset" button and re-focus the way we approach work. Simply having a couple of extra days to mentally work through your problems, especially now that we are moving into the Christmas period, allows for a re-dedication of both mind and body to…

We all put our pants on the same way

Something happened to me in January 2005. I had been in sales for eight years and decided to make a change. I started my career in recruiting in 1995 with an agency and left in 1998 to pursue other opportunities in sales. I had decided I had enough. I never wanted to be a sales person with a quota again.

I enrolled at St. Edward’s University…

More Healthcare Jobs Require Electronic Medical Record Experience

Healthcare professionals are going to need more than just medical knowledge to get many of today's jobs.

In fact, the most common skill requested in healthcare job ads has little to do with medicine.  It's the ability to manage Electronic Medical Records…

Guest Column: You Want to Look at What?

Paula Roy is StaffingU’s VP of Learning and Development and is the principal consultant at PMRoy Consulting.

No matter what role an individual plays in the job market, he or she has probably heard at least one odd request from a prospective employer for deeply personal information, purportedly for use in evaluating fitness for a job. Before anyone…

The Best Marketing Ever

From websites to collateral material to social media, there are many opinions as to which one is the best marketing approach. It’s much, much simpler than that – just do great work. Yes, marketing vehicles, such as a great website, are powerful and important. Yet, they pale in comparison to the marketing impact of the work you do, how you do it, and the ROI for your customer. There is nothing like a great outcome that creates satisfaction, positive buzz, strong testimonials (for your website…

Possibly the best talent attraction video ever!

Ok so this is not your norm, BDO have been in business here in the cayman Islands for ten years and they wanted to celebrate with a corporate video. They asked us for our help and we were very surprised when they said they wanted it to be funny! An accountancy firm willing to mock themselves! I know its unheard of especially as they are one of the top ten accountancy firms in the world. But this video goes to show why they have been voted one of the top employers here in Cayman, why…

Arrogant recruiter gets a good smack!

Sadly it’s true; there are arrogant, unpleasant, aggressive recruiters in this world (but not many!).

Anyway, the very worst amongst these, a smug, self-important, borderline sleaze-ball, was interviewing a young graduate, and as was his wont, he thought humiliating her would be a good way to go.

“So” he snorted, leaning back in his chair and sneering at the young woman opposite him “What makes you
so…

Day One At HRTech Conference - Chicago IL

Ryan and I made it out to Chicago with no problems other than my flight being an hour late.  The weather is colder here compared to home but the city is bustling away.  The Chicago marathon, Notre Dame playing Miami at Soldier Field, the Graph expo (large printing industry conference) and HR Tech are all going on at the same time.  Fun!

Today is HR Evolution…

True Unemployment Rate on 10/5/2012 is 14.7%

This morning it was widely reported that the "unemployment rate" dropped to 7.8% - and that most of the drop was "the fact that many people simply stopped looking for a job."  That comment is very disrespectful to unemployed people who are working harder than ever to find a job.

The rate that is reported as the unemployment rate by the Bureau of Labor Statistics…
