About a week ago I read an article in the New York Post entitled “Merrill Flinch: Retail banking push meets broker resistance.” I’ve read similar articles in Registered Rep and so on. Anyone could have (and many did) predict that this and more would happen. This is one of many instances where completely opposite and conflicting corporate cultures are going to clash.
BofA is pressuring Merrill brokers to start pushing retail banking products. The big brouhaha in the news is that BofA…

On October 9th I posted a blog about how it might take 4 years to get unemployment back to normal. I referred to a Wall Street Journal survey of 48 economists which shows that on average these economist believed that the official unemployment rate would peak at 10.2% in February of 2010. They were half right.
The Department of Labor released the October unemployment numbers and the official unemployment rate is now at 10.2% (a 26 year high) while the true unemployment rate (including…

There is much discussion on Social Media Groups and by people posting blogs about Branding.
When you think about it…what is Employer Branding? Isn’t it employers doing the right thing by running a company that people respect and where employees want to work? Often I think if an employer has a catchy slogan they believe it is enough to attract attention, get people interested in their product and their brand is…

On Wednesday I rocked at an Interview I had with a small recruitment firm that has been in business for 15 years, has a great company culture and offers a opportunity to hit the ground running! My observations when I walked in were; a small staff, everyone smiling and no one looked like they had a migraine. The staff really looked passionate about their jobs and like they were happy to be there. The hiring manager was very impressed I had done my "homework" on the company. It seems there would…

It’s a phrase that has been around for years, yet different people define it in different ways. Some think it’s just about a slogan or ‘tag line’, others equate successful companies like Virgin or Google with it, But what IS an employer brand? And should it be called that in the first place?
Take a can of Coke or a Mars bar, or a Ferrari if you like. Each are made to a constant formula or recipe. They never vary. They are proper brands (or in the case of the Ferrari each car is a…

One of the questions I get often asked as a blogger, is what to right about. So in preparation for the blogging track I led at the
Recruiting Unconference, I put together a take away for the bloggers that attended my tracks.
So if you blog about recruitment, in any way and constantly get stuck for subjects to blog on, take a…

Brands are fascinating. Search Google and you get 525 million hits. Search your home and you’ll find virtually every surface either branded or displaying something branded. Shut your eyes and think for a moment and chances are good even your internal landscape is cluttered with brands. And if you’re among the top 15% of consumers, you (and the other 14.xxx%) account for approximately 1.5 billion brand…

As the recession begins to wane, it’s a good time to assess what effects it has had on the relationship between employers and employees. Why? These changes will continue to reverberate over the coming years and affect how recruiting and hiring is conducted, what technologies and approaches are…

We hear about it in the news every so often out here in Silicon Valley: a big player at Google has left for Facebook. Or a Yahoo executive has been seduced by Microsoft. Or some perky young startup has snatched a head developer from a venerable software giant.
Silicon Valley's human resources arena, ripe with star engineers and executives, is like a day time soap opera, full of unexpected surprises and shocking betrayals. Every time a transfer of talent occurs, juicy questions…

I truly appreciate the kind words of the community and the generosity of this contest's benefactor.
I thought it would be interesting to share a brief back-story on how the piece evolved.
My son was in the hospital the week before the contest ended. My wife was staying with him during the day, and I would come up there straight from work so she could go home, see our daughter and prepare his food and sundries for the following day.

LinkUp, the fastest growing job search engine, has an innovative Facebook application for employers called: Current-Jobs-at-Our-Company. The application allows companies and employers to easily publish their open job listings to their Facebook page or company’s ‘Fan’ page.

Reflections on the unconference TruLondon
Today was an auspicious event: Trulondon an unconference planned by Bill Boorman and his merry band of geniuses. I have admired Bill from afar because he embodies something sorely missing from the industry of recruiting: a heart of gold.
It has been an honor to participate in Bill’s blogradio show over the past few weeks. I am the girl who toots the horn of compassion. We simply can’t take the “human” out of human resources, yet so…

Do you lead one? Do you have one? It's a pretty good question these days since there's a lot of talk about Tribes going around. And it seems to be an evolving situation but an interesting one since it's apparent that it's becoming a very powerful cultural phenomenon. I would say that it's probably because of the increased connectivity we all have allows us access to people who have the same views and values. For more on Tribes, I would recommend Seth Godin's book, oddly enough titled:…

I have had my own recruiting firm for just over 5 years now and have NEVER had a problem collecting a fee from a client....never say never. I now have a deadbeat client (read Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full" to see the real name for a deadbeat) that made $105 M last quarter and won't pay my lousy fee.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!
