Why Recruiters Should Care About My New Job-Seeker Book

I was going to announce my new book ("The Job-Seeker's Guide to Resume Search Optimization and the Internet-Age Resume") here, but then I thought, "Dan, why does a bunch of recruiters care about your job-seeker book?!"

The good news is that I answered myself. Okay, maybe that's bad… Continue

Generation X - Sandwiched Between Baby Boomers and Gen Y and Forgotten

Somewhere out there another article or blog this week will address the Baby Boomers retiring or discuss how to manage Gen Y in today's ever changing workplace. Honestly, as a Gen X, I am tired of hearing about either generation

and for a moment would like to spotlight the "Sandwich Generation" -

Gen X. Back in May 2003 Time Magazine wrote an article focusing on "the

sandwich generation” referring to 30 and 40 something adults sandwiched between

caring for both young…

How to train a National Recruiting Organization about BLOGS when you have never used them

1. First you look at the time and realize you have 30 minutes to prepare. Because the person who was going to present got sick.

2. You search out a Blog and Join it

3. You get lucky and find one that is connected to LinkedIn which you are very familiar with

4. You create a profile and look through the profiles of about 20 other people

5. You take 3-5 deep breaths and speak confidently as if you have been putting up Blog posts for years.

Congrats To Ning

Ning just raised $44 Million. This seems like very good news unless you are a regular reader and commentor or Techcrunch and Gigaom. Since I am an uneducated individual when it comes to such things as valuations and bubbles, I am excited about it because I would think that now they can stay in business longer, hire… Continue

On political correctness and diversity training claptrap...

Quote for the Day, Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

"Do CEOs really believe the diversity claptrap or do they put on a happy face to avoid legal and other problems? Either way, they are acting in a manner contrary to the best interests of their companies, shareholders and the public at large."

HR Technology Productivity

Over 20 years ago I started my career as an Engineer in the newly emerging IT business, and yes, it was pre-IBM PC.

For many years I listened to reports telling me that the introduction of computers was not having any effect on staff productivity. Pah!, I thought, showing my age. If I was younger I would probably say, Meh!.

Back in the dark ages just before the dawn of the PC I…

Reasons Not To Watch The News

Unrelated to research I suppose, but this was on my mind this evening!

I don't subscribe to any newspaper. I try to avoid watching the news on TV at all cost.

You're probably thinking, "Geez, she's so disconnected from what's going on in the world. How could you possibly expect to keep up with everything that's happening? What's wrong with watching the news? It's important to know what is happening around you."

Why??

Why is it important to know about everyone…

What do you mean? You think your blog is PERSONAL?!? Hahahahahahaha!!!

I recently came across this article by Perry Binder in the Atlanta Business Journal discussing whether or not companies should allow their employees to blog. Binder's take on personal blogs is simple - as he puts it... "Let 'em blog."

Many workers have the innocent, yet misguided, notion that what they do on their time with their home…

On the virtues of work experience...

Quote for the Day: Friday, July 6th, 2007

"It's a curious thing, this esteem we have for longevity. Why is an anniversary cause for celebration? I can see it in some Purple Heart sense--congratulations for surviving--but that doesn't seem to be the spirit in which such celebrations are intended...

What's the big deal about being married to the same person, or working for the same company, for so many years? Is it supposed to be some expression of loyalty,…

Roller Coaster ride

I recently went to a large Amusement Park here in Ohio for a two day respit to re-introduce myself to my kids (that means paying for admission, doling out spending cash, and casting them off for the day). As my wife and I we were climbing the hill on my favorite rickety roller-coaster, awaiting the big drop that I knew was inevitabley to come ( I have rode the same coaster for over ten years), I realized that what I was about to experience in the next twenty seconds, will be a condensed…

How Can I Use RecruitingBlogs To Its Fullest?

Okay, so I just did the "regular" thing. I cross posted the latest posting from the FRACAT Blog to my blog here.

I know that'll probably get some additional traffic and visibility. And I know that's what a lot of you are doing, too.

But I'm looking at the possibility of spending significant time on RecruitingBlogs (I just changed my color scheme, after all) and I want to get the most out of this community that I can.

How To Strategically Plan Your Vacation Time for Less Stress, Greater Productivity, and Gloating Rights

Let me ask you a question about this week. Did you see July 4th in

the middle of this week and think to yourself, “Self - We could go on a

9 day vacation and only have to take 4 days off from work!”?

I know a lot of people have done just that. Well, here’s my newsflash for you:

Congratulations! You’re now a month behind and many dollars poorer.

What’s more, if you had thought more strategically about your vacation, you could be way ahead of your…
