"dirty rotten job searching tricks"

I prefer not to comment on blogs that are blatant marketing posts on any site, by people who are too damn cheap to buy an ad. Phil Rosenberg makes a career out of posting half a blog with a link to his site to try and drive traffic to his site. I wasn't born at night and it sure wasn't last night. Being called out for moderating comments it appears he has decided to let comments through on this site rather than try to get them posted on his own blog.

A few words to you Phil. If you… Continue

Recruit Virtually. Save the Earth.

Go Green!

Did you know that virtual MBA recruitment technology can help save the planet?

In 2008, MBA Focus and its partner schools decided to no longer offer printed resume books to recruiters in an effort to conserve paper and save trees. Based on the number of resume books ordered each year, we estimated that we would save at least 75 trees per year.

Today, in partnership with InterviewStream, we aim to reduce carbon emissions one virtual interview at a time! And…

Sometimes the truth hurts

People who proclaim that most interview advice is simplistic irritate me. These are people who view advice on eye contact, handshakes, how to answer difficult questions, and avoiding smoking before an interview, as obvious and unworthy of  mention. Their "expert" advice is often sarcastic, blunt, and insulting.

But the fact remains that occasionally some of these…

Recruiters… Stand up straight and stop bending over

It’s tough out there in the commercial contingent recruitment world – I know, I live in it too.  Clients seem to hold regular reverse auctions for fees, playing one recruiter off against another 3 or 4. Candidates swear they are being transparent, then they continually move the goalposts throughout the process and competitors pull out all stops to make the placement – sometimes ethically and sometimes… well…completely unethically.  It can be disheartening, frustrating and bloody…

Countering the Counter Offer

Have you ever sourced the Best Candidate; sold them on the opportunity with your company or client; worked with them through the interview process, answering their questions; helped the hiring manager determine the best compensation package; extend the offer that they accepted; and then lost the candidate to a counter offer?  If you have been in the recruitment business for any amount of time, you have experienced that sinking feeling when they stop returning your calls.

When…

You Accepted the Position – Beware of the Counter Offer

Expert Recruitment Consultant Discusses the Dangers of Accepting a Counter Offer

Numbers demonstrate the employment market is improving.  As a result the people who have jobs are beginning to dip their toes gingerly into the market.  Surveys show that 30% to 60% of employed workers are unhappy in their jobs and are waiting for the employment market to improve.  An expert recruitment consultant warns that some of these people are setting themselves up for…

Put that pedal to the floor!!!

This morning, I realized that I still have a lot of work to do before the holiday.  It's Thursday...technically mid-week for a recruiter.  Long line recruiting, local interviews, and client calls are all on my plate for today.  Not to mention our VP will be in town the next two days...right before I go on vacation for a week to refresh.

The point is, I am working up to the buzzer.  Every recruiter, no matter what industry or what experience level, can slack at this point in the week,…

A SALUTE TO VETERANS PAST AND PRESENT – And how serving in the military was my introduction into recruitment...

It all started with the military heritage of my family.

On June 16, 1942 the New Mexico Albuquerque Journal had a front page article with photos entitled "GIVE FIVE SONS TO THEIR COUNTRY".  The photos are those of my grandparents, on my mother's side, and their five sons (my uncles-THE CHAVEZ BROTHERS) in military uniform, all in the service (Army and…

Men: 40, Women: 6.

REEEEAAALLLY?

Because they show “ties” for several of the top 40 listings, there are actually 46 people on Fortune’s 40 Under 40, an annual list of business movers and shakers.  13% Women.  You have to get to #20 (#21 really) to see the first woman.  How very sad.  Fortune has been…

Early Christmas Presents, Great Opportunity!

The Indian summer seems to have officially gone and it's now time to dust off the winter coats and step into the cold wind, hoping that London can avoid coming to a standstill this winter. With any luck, you might even sink your hand into the pocket of your long forgotten favourite winter coat to find a tenner you didn't realise was in there. I would love to say that's what happened to me, alas, it did not. A year old packet of chewing gum isn't nearly as…

Words to the Wise - Recruiter in the Balance

Words to the wise from a recruitment veteran of forty years- besides being dedicated to the recruiter's life (whatever that may mean to you) along with taking care of personal responsibilities with family, etc.--make an effort to have sideline activities such that they take you away from the rigors of recruiting (because traversing the terrain can become rigorous, even difficult).

I say this for two reasons—particularly for…

There’s been lots of talk recently that either rubbishes social games or proposes building a new one for recruiting purposes. Most recently Marriot have released a much applauded game to fit their employer brand. It's been applauded by many, while others have commented "play games, get kids!” untill recently, i would have sat in the neigh sayers, but the number of…
