Gen Y Boosters Are Dumb

Audio version here

Frizzy-haired, New York-based, Canadian author, Malcolm Gladwell has just released a new book that everyone is talking about. It's surely going to be a bestseller.

And perhaps that's partly because the main premise is very simple and easy to understand: even naturally talented people need practice to…

Job Centers See Crush of People in Need

"They have little in common: Ron Jones, 52, short and strong, a union carpenter with decades of work experience; and Jerome Grant, 20, tall and thin, a Jamaican immigrant with a degree in culinary arts. But the economy has pushed them to the same difficult place.

On a recent morning, they sat across from each other at a one-stop career center here, feverishly applying for two months of temporary work with United Parcel Service. The pay was $8.50 an hour. There were 150 slots, and…

How do you feel about Personal Branding?

I stumbled upon a debate about personal branding started by Geoff Livingston of The Buzz Bin a few days ago with his blog post: I Don’t Care About Your Personal Brand. While I disagree with the overall message, he does bring up some interesting points.

(Mitch Joel at Twist Image responded with a post: Why You Need To Care More About Your Personal Brand. I encourage you to read both posts, the comments, and come to your own conclusion).

To touch upon a few of the key… Continue

Remember Ricky Nelson's great song, Garden Party?

"But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.

You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
"

You may not. Ricky was the precursor of the whole "rock star" thing. With more than 50 Top 100 hits, Nelson was second only to Elvis Presley as the most popular rock and… Continue

How not to act your age at work

I approached my father, a high ranking Pilot with over 30 years flight experience, to get involved with blogs to discuss interesting Aviation topics. I suggested several blogs and Twitter... and OMG, here is a man surrounded by complex systems in an aircraft but a simple sign up procedure became more difficult than landing on an aircraft carrier. I'm sure when I reach his age my children will be taunting me with new… Continue

Career Planning, Career envy

It is a challenging thing planning a career in the Recruiting world, the starting point seems fairly straight forward...... Most people fall into it don't they? I don't know many (or any) who can answer the question "How did you get into Recruiting?" with a, "You know, it's just something I always wanted to do!" Most I think fall into it... some fall in love with it, some use it as a stepping stone, some "gun" sales guys, see the money making opportunity and want to jump on the… Continue

Similarities between Dating and Recruiting

Dating and recruiting have a lot in common. Learn how to improve your recruiting efforts by applying the most common dating rules.

1. First impressions are critical.

Recruiting application:

Differentiate yourself. Resist the “I have a great position for you” especially if you have never spoken to them.

2. Don’t believe everything you see. We have all heard stories from people that signed up for an online dating service and were shocked when their date was… Continue

'Tis The Season To Be Thankful

So much to be thankful for. That's the subject of this week's post. I thought a lot about what I wanted to write this week, with so much going on.

It appears at times that life gives you a forward thinking direction when you need it most. Why the challenges that we face sometimes, why the distinct path that makes you reach down deep to find yourself? Well, 'tis the season.

There is really a great deal to be thankful for, at times one must wonder what brings maximum… Continue

The Interview Experience

Even as the economy crumbles and more companies lay off their workers, it is more critical than ever to sharpen the interview process in your company. Candidates today are more cautious, and less likely to leave the companies they are with. The ones actively looking are talking with a number of companies and have screening experiences to compare.

I recently went in for an interview with a staffing organization about a month ago. They came across my information and asked me if I was… Continue

"Should I Stay or Should I Go?"

We all know this is a difficult job market. We have friends and neighbors who are looking for work. People like to share horror stories and layoffs make the headlines every day. Is it any wonder that people who are employed want to hunker down and stay where they are - riding out the storm? The familiar company seems safer than the unknown. But when you do learn of a new opportunity or receive a new job offer do you find yourself humming this question posed by the Clash - “Should I Stay or… Continue
