Recruiters turned Community Managers? I doubt it somehow...

Back in 1999, I was working on the development of a piece of software that allowed the recruiter to reach candidates that were coming together in newsgroups, on-line, to converse about their specialist subjects. It was while delving into this world of on-line groups that I had a light bulb moment - I realised that tapping into these communities, or 'special interest groups' as we referred to them back then, could be the future for creating a more robust and credible recruitment supply…

Is change management about to change?

A few years ago I had a conversation about change with Mike Osterling. My lean manufacturing mentor and consultant. The topic revolved around change management and how…

Hiring 32 professionals.......an update on the Atlassian32 recruitment campaign

In August 2009 I blogged about the innovative recruitment campaign of Australian software company, Atlassian. This campaign invited open slather recruitment agency participation ... with a catch. The Atlassian32 campaign was launched with the purpose of hiring 32 software engineers for their Sydney head office.

After I posted the article on my personal blog 39 people commented on the article, easily the most number of comments any of my blog posts has received. To say… Continue

Olympic Pride Brightens Up the Workplace

With the end of the Olympics quickly approaching it has become apparent that the games have instilled a new found sense of pride in fellow Canadians in what has been a dismissal few years. Those who would not typically watch sports events now find themselves glued to the tube tuning into hours of curling or skating coverage or surfing the net to find out how Canada is positioned in the global medal race. Now if only organizations can achieve that level of engagement from their employees.… Continue

2 Secrets of Successful "Social Recruiting" Explained

Every day, somewhere out there in our universe, many Recruiters are losing their way in regards to using social networks such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook for recruiting purposes. I see the complaints (often ironically aired via Twitter) that <insert favorite social network name> simply doesn't work for recruiting and is only a waste of time. These rants are typically followed by statements extolling the virtues of the telephone - and how "real" Recruiters know how to magically work… Continue

Attitude - Everyone Has One.....

I wonder sometimes if candidates know that they're projecting a bad attitude, or coming off as arrogant, that they talk so much that no one else has a chance to say anything? I spoke with a young man today that was clearly very frustrated, and didn't hide it. I asked what was the problem and he said he was frustrated, didn't apologize, just said he was having a bad day. Why would anyone call a recruiter when they are so totally frustrated that they can't speak normally? I told…

Embracing Twitter and Ning Networks-Does it Depend On Your Industry?

I'm curious. What is your experience? I was thinking of doing some research in this area, but I thought I'd run it by you first. Which industries embrace it? Which resist it? If you have an opinion, or research on this topic, I'd love to hear from you.

Are you up to your neck in the hiring process paperwork?

Companies now, more than ever, are shifting to a paperless work environment. As I look at my own desk, bulging with piles of paper, it’s not hard to justify the ROI on making such a move. I must admit, I am a little “old school” about holding on to my files and printing copies of everything that I also file electronically. But I’m finally at the breaking point as my workspace becomes smaller and smaller and my piles become higher and higher. I’m ready to embrace an e-friendly paperless…

Who Owns The Talent Community?

Since the launch of Blogger in 1999, the ability to publish content on the Internet has become easier and easier. Savvy recruiting professionals have taken advantage of this dynamic shift to connect with prospective candidates to better meet their organization's recruiting needs. In many cases, these early adopters had to build a web presence on their own because senior leadership…

Posting & Applying Online – Why it isn’t working!

With a recovering market there must be a lot of “great candidates” on the market – right? I believe that due to some unfortunate circumstances there are some “great” people out there looking. So when you post your jobs on Hcareers or any other job board why aren’t they applying?

I am fond of saying that the great thing about the internet is that it makes it easy to apply for any job you like and the bad thing about the internet is that it makes it easy for you to apply for any job… Continue

The Importance of Mentors

Why is being a mentor important? More importantly, why is being mentored important.

There's been a lot of discussion this week about lists. I scratched my head and thought, "HRMargo, what matters most about this? Why is this topic important to you?"

It's important because I am who I am because of the people who've influenced my life. The people who have influenced my career…

Recruiting From a Home Office Ain't So Bad

One year later, and I've changed my mind about working from home, I really like it. I think the key was having requirements to keep me busy and a rewarding commission structure. Took quite a while to build up to a decent monthly paycheck, since I'm paid based on hours my placements work, but I guess I got lucky (by that I mean I worked really hard) and found a good person to work with.

I never thought I would consider it a "real" job, just something to do until I found…

Stop Thinking Like an HR Neanderthal

You may get reminded every day, as I am, that you are not twenty anymore. Especially now that both my guys are in their twenties. It's hard to take when things that you thought were so cool just aren't now. As a field HR is no worse than say, law, or accounting, when it comes to not keeping up, but that's like saying big hair is no less cool than spandex.

Take compensation, for example. Most small businesses have adopted religiously the concepts of salary grids, annual salary…

What has Google got against you?

Google is a search engine. Wrong. Google is a reputation management tool.

If asked anything, whether about a band, shop, company, name or place, what is the first thing you do? Google it. Even your grandma Googles it now. It officially became a verb in the Oxford English Dictionary 4 years ago. It is undeniable that information a…

There never was, nor will there ever be a qualified candidate shortage.

What is heard often from recruiters over a drink at happy hour in Anytown, USA is the lack of qualified candidates in the marketplace. Let the increasing population, demise of entire industries, the worst recession and employment landscape in our lifetime and the invent of easier and more efficient ways to source qualified candidates, some of these recruiters may find a solution by simply making a few more phone calls. Aside from those, I subscribe that we are not and have never been in a… Continue

Judging A Book By Its Cover

The old cliché says you can't judge a book by its cover and like every cliché, it has more than a kernel of truth to it. And just like every cliché, we do it anyway. We judge people by their looks, resumes by their format or lack thereof and I'm told, women even judge men by their shoes although since I'm in Southern California it's hard to tell since a lot of people don't really wear shoes.

So it's enough to say that we shouldn't judge by appearance alone. Okay, that's enough then.… Continue
