Writing a Resume? I've got some tough love for ya!

You've heard of tough love right? This is the kind of love that family members dispense to love one’s who either don't listen or refuse to follow the advice of their elders. Well, in response to all of the corporate generated schmaltz and fake romance from this previous Valentine weekend, I am inspired to dispense my own version of tough love. What is the object of my affection? Well.... writing resumes or, to be more specific, the people that use a resume to get IT positions in the DFW area -… Continue

Why don't Recruitment Ad Agencies do 'Twitter'?

Photobucket

Or Facebook. Or YouTube. Or many places in the world of Social Media? It's been a subject we've obviously noticed and been aware of for a while - especially as we're successfully involved in recruitment/employer branding ourselves.

Why the reticence? Many have set up Twitter accounts that tweet infrequently. Have they that little to talk about?… Continue

Recruiter/Client Relationships Matter

Job seekers should actively seek out the recruiters and companies who can have direct managerial contact with their clients, because it can dramatically increase their chances of getting the job. Having these direct relationships with the client doesn’t guarantee placements. However, in terms of probability, the likelihood of getting the job is increased when coupled with a great candidate and great relationship.

The Purr of the Iron Tiger

Today's NY Times reports on something I saw first-hand in Shanghai and Beijing: the Year of the Tiger got off to an early start and the Central Bank is trying to cool things down a bit.

What's bad news for the central bank is good news for the jobs market, at least from the candidate's perspective. From my perspective, this is good news about the recovery to come in the U.S. market,…

Organic HR

Sustainable, non-toxic, and low on chemical fertilizer, Organic HR is something I have been developing for the last couple of years, based on over thirty years in the trenches of large and small organizations. Throw out lengthy interviews, do away with performance appraisals, and stop giving annual salary raises to everyone.Since it is unlikely that large organizations will ever see their way out of the tangled web they have woven for themselves my focus is on small business (under 150…

Honeymoon Hairstyles and Attrition

When my wife and I went on our honeymoon back in 1999, we had a great time. We went to Thailand and had a blast, the time of our life.

During this time my wife took the opportunity to try something a little different with her hair style. (Oh god am I going to get killed for this?) She took the opportunity to get all her hair beaded and braided. It was pretty cool, she'd never done that before, she looked pretty hot, although it kind of hurt when she turned her heard too… Continue

Revamping Diversity Recruiting Initiatives That Don't Work

I responded to a previous discussion on LinkedIn on this subject with an invitation to provide ideas. I replied with:

"So you're working on revamping your "diversity recruiting

initiative". This suggests that you're not happy with your past effort(s).

Sourcing and recruiting diversity is always a challenge, but my initial advice

is to first look within. All to often poor diversity hiring results are driven

by a hiring process…

Finding a New Career in the Great Recession

In prior posts, we have covered the massive restructuring occurring in our economy. We have recognized that millions of traditional jobs are gone, and not likely to return. We have predicted that the new jobs of tomorrow are likely to fall within a range of self-employment options. Today, we're going to start exploring these options in more detail, beginning with the entry level opportunities that exist in self-employment today.

Making the Employment-Model…

Unemployment Extension News

February 11 Update: The latest version of the bipartisan Senate Jobs bill includes a three month unemployment extension. The legislation, if passed, would extend the federal Extended Benefits Program, the Federal Additional Compensation (extra $25 per week) benefits, and the 65% Cobra health insurance subsidy through May 31. However, a vote on the legislation is not expected until the week of February 22 at the earliest and the current extension expires on February 28.

JobDeck by the people that brought you Twitter

So by the people who brought you Twitter, we get JobDeck. A portal that brings all the jobs that are twittered about to one place. But how good is this product really? Well I used it several times to do searches and get an idea how to use it and how well it works. I found it did a decent job of sorting out all the tweets and only bringing the ones that appeared to be jobs matching my criteria to me. But to me it is like any SEO. The biggest…

Hiring Managers do not understand recruiting

As a rule most hiring managers do not understand recruiting. They think all we do is look at Monster or Hotjobs (which was just bought by monster) or the other databases and find people with no problems. They do not understand the amount of work that goes into the sourcing part of recruiting. One way I have found that has helped me educate the hiring manager, is to arrange sourcing sessions with them. Make an appointment to meet with them and talk about the opening and source. You will be…
