Knock with your elbows!

Believe it or not we are coming up to Christmas... well the Shopping malls and TV ads are telling me that. With that, the parties are starting, the liver is getting prepared both professionally and personally. I have friends off to Indonesia this coming weekend, so I have now had my first official Christmas do...

With the advent of the Christmas spirit, I was reminded of a saying my Dad always used to say if people were coming over for a function or a party. "Sure come on over. Just… Continue

When it comes to writing recruitment copy, first impressions really do count

I may bang on about it a lot, but that's because I am on a mission - A mission to try and up the quality of content on the plethora of job boards that are out there in cyberspace. Here's why.....

Job advertising is one of the most effective sourcing mechanisms available to you and your company – not only for candidates, but for prospective clients and future employees. Advertising is often the very first time people get to find out who your company are, what you do… and how good you… Continue

Online recruitment: Quantity at the expense of quality?

Let's face it, we've never before lived in an age where such a plethora of job opportunities are accessible to us at the mere touch of a button. But is this instantaneous solution really all it's cracked up to be? Is the constant search for new and supposedly better ways to reach the job seeker really an advance, or merely adding to the woes of the already stressed out candidate who, when faced with a huge list of all too often bland and uninspiring job posts, struggles to separate the wheat…

The Client Side - We're Not Alone

I was out for a hike in nearby state park with my son's Cub Scout den on a beautiful North Carolina day today and had an interesting conversation with a friend whose son is also in the den. I love those conversations with smart people in other businesses where you can share and gain perspective outside of your normal business routine. This friend has a renewable energy business. It's a neat business model, he's got VC capital (something most of us in our business couldn't fathom), and he's in… Continue

How can the Australian job market continue its growth?

As the Australian job market continues to outperform by adding 24,500 new jobs in October, instead of the expected 10,000 jobs, Prime Minister Rudd, and the Labor Government have something to celebrate about on their 2-year anniversary.

We expect job growth to continue in the long-term. Project such as Gorgon in Western Australia will continue to increase the number of jobs. According to the ACIL Tasman report, an additional 10,000 direct and indirect jobs are on the horizon,… Continue

Twilight: Pattinson in New Moon breaks midnight record

The new Twilight vampire movie took a record $26.3m (?15.9m) in midnight showings at North American box offices, studio Summit Entertainment has said.

That beats the previous North American record of $22.2m (?13.5m) for midnight openings, taken by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in July.

Experts have predicted that New Moon will have one of the biggest opening weekends for a non-summer film.

The first movie in the series, starring Robert Pattinson, made… Continue

The Six Biggest Applicant Lies

Just posted a story about the six biggest applcaint lies we see from an empyment screening point of view. Wondering how it jives with what recruiters see. See: http://www.esrcheck.com/wordpress/989/the-six-biggest-job-applicant-lies

Hacked E-mails Fuel Climate Change Skeptics

Hundreds of private e-mails and documents hacked from a computer server at a British university are causing a stir among global warming skeptics, who say they show that climate scientists conspired to overstate the case for a human influence on climate change.

The e-mails, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics, and casual… Continue

Merrill brokers pressured to also be bank tellers

About a week ago I read an article in the New York Post entitled “Merrill Flinch: Retail banking push meets broker resistance.” I’ve read similar articles in Registered Rep and so on. Anyone could have (and many did) predict that this and more would happen. This is one of many instances where completely opposite and conflicting corporate cultures are going to clash.

BofA is pressuring Merrill brokers to start pushing retail banking products. The big brouhaha in the news is that BofA… Continue

Twenty percent true unemployment in 2010?

On October 9th I posted a blog about how it might take 4 years to get unemployment back to normal. I referred to a Wall Street Journal survey of 48 economists which shows that on average these economist believed that the official unemployment rate would peak at 10.2% in February of 2010. They were half right.

The Department of Labor released the October unemployment numbers and the official unemployment rate is now at 10.2% (a 26 year high) while the true unemployment rate (including… Continue

Employer Branding vs. Catchy Slogans what works?

There is much discussion on Social Media Groups and by people posting blogs about Branding.

When you think about it…what is Employer Branding? Isn’t it employers doing the right thing by running a company that people respect and where employees want to work? Often I think if an employer has a catchy slogan they believe it is enough to attract attention, get people interested in their product and their brand is… Continue

Rock em, Sock em, and Knock em!

On Wednesday I rocked at an Interview I had with a small recruitment firm that has been in business for 15 years, has a great company culture and offers a opportunity to hit the ground running! My observations when I walked in were; a small staff, everyone smiling and no one looked like they had a migraine. The staff really looked passionate about their jobs and like they were happy to be there. The hiring manager was very impressed I had done my "homework" on the company. It seems there would… Continue

Is the term ‘employer brand’ a misnomer?

It’s a phrase that has been around for years, yet different people define it in different ways. Some think it’s just about a slogan or ‘tag line’, others equate successful companies like Virgin or Google with it, But what IS an employer brand? And should it be called that in the first place?

Take a can of Coke or a Mars bar, or a Ferrari if you like. Each are made to a constant formula or recipe. They never vary. They are proper brands (or in the case of the Ferrari each car is a…
