Pardon me while I answer my cell phone and commit other interview blunders...

I love being connected; perhaps a bit too much because getting away becomes more and more difficult the more technology I add to my life. However, there are times when it is completely inappropriate to take advantage of that which instant connectivity has to offer. Specifically I’m referring to answering your cell in the middle of an interview.

I have been working on a position in the treasury group of my company and called a very promising looking candidate today. When I asked if it… Continue

Facebook Helps Employers Get In Touch With Desired Candidates

Social Networks, like reality television, aren't going anywhere. But unlike reality television, social networks can be useful as well as fun.

The Col. Jessep approach to recruiting

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be infiltrated by recruiters with phones and keyboards. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom.... You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Wall Street's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, is the key to hiring top talent. You don't want the truth because deep down in places… Continue

Working moms look to Michelle Obama for change

CINCINNATI (Reuters) – Maternity leave. Affordable child-care. Flexible work arrangements. When first lady Michelle Obama said she wanted to help working women balance career and family, American moms applauded -- and immediately came up with a wish-list of policy changes.

"I'm so psyched she is bringing this issue to the forefront," said Geniene Pernotto, 43, a… Continue

Greed is Good!

A catch cry of the 80's! A time of opulence, bad style and probably even worse music. It was the predecessor of the last recession, a time most famously known in Australia as "the recession we had to have". We may look back and snicker and scorn, but what will the next generation say about us? I think my hair and suit will stand the test of time, but who knows :)

Did "Greed is Good" make a comeback? Like the fashion? If not, what will people in the… Continue

Tough Times for Exec Search Firms in DC

On the front page of today's Washington Post Business Section. Even in the country's best job market, search firms are feeling the pinch. Many are shifting lines of business, shedding poor performers, but uncertainty still reigns supreme. There may be a light at the end of the tunnel however due to upcoming bailout and stimulus spending, which reminds me of my late grandfather telling me stories about how life in DC during the Great Depression wasn't so bad, primarily due to the proximity of… Continue

For the common good? Seriously?!?

I've heard so many "thought leaders" and "enthusiasts" spout off about what's good for the industry, what's needed and what's not. Well on that premise let us focus on the "Common good" of the industry.

What exactly does "common good" actually mean? It obviously holds various connotations for different people and the true essence of the "meaning" will have great range… Continue

Recruiting Hair Styles - The Mullet and The Bald

Not many teenagers in the 80’s chose to have a Caucasoid afro. I certainly didn’t want one either, but I had thick bushy hair that could house a community of squirrels. I was the goofball kid dressed in tennis shorts, a Polo shirt, and boat shoes. I may have been a teenage Dork with a capital D but I had my own style.

Sometimes Recruiting is like hair. It can be bushy and thick. It can be thin and straight. It can be long, curly, and even bald. Sometimes you just don’t have a choice… Continue

Any advice on how to get companies posting jobs on Monster (or another big job site) to pay a small fee to cross-post the job on our site?

About us: We're a small 3 person staffing agency.

My boss's big new business plan is to generate income by having companies posting jobs on the big job sites pay us a small fee to cross post jobs on our (soon to be completed) new website. We're having a tough time getting job orders so she wants to try something new.

Example: Careerbuilder has an option for cross posting (for a fee) to other sites, which also collect a small fee (a few bucks) from the company… Continue

Women should wear high heals and lipstick to be successful

Female employees at the Bank of England have been advised to "Always wear a heel and some sort of make-up, even if it’s just lipstick." And don't forget that clients like tight skirts and cleavage too...

Legions facing layoffs turn to parties, Internet

Phil Berent of New York, right, with a pink bracelet indicating he is looking for work, speaks with recruiter

NEW YORK – The bar was crowded with well-dressed professionals enjoying drinks and conversation, a typical evening — except that many of them had no job.

The event was a Wall Street Pink Slip Party, where the unemployed mix with recruiters and… Continue
