Working from home

I have the option to work from home 2 days a week. Is working from home really the best idea? Not for me. Look, I have two daughters aged 1 and 2 years old and they keep me crazy-whoops I mean busy. Even though we have an au pair, I can still hear the child noises and it is distracting. I sort of want to play with them but then again I don't. Ahh, the dilemmas of being a working mom.

I view going into the office as a "vacation." I… Continue

What Software Speeds Up Your Day The Most

Lifehacker has a post up asking readers about sw they use that speeds up their day most.

The comments have largely degenerated into a list of people's favorite SW (I am not sure how Firefox makes you any more productive than IE - and I am a loyal FF user)

So I thought I would throw the question out to the community and modify it somewhat: What software helps make you more productive on a… Continue

'Digging Into RecruitingBlogs.com'

In today's post John makes a couple of interesting observations, opening with this:

May is traditionally a slow month for Recruiting communities...the avalanche of trade shows get in the way of hobnobbing with peers.
Hmmm...I'll have to leave a comment. What about you?

Do or Die situation for IT recruitment consultancies in India

Do or Die situation for IT recruitment consultancies in India

Recruitment consultancy business in India is flourishing like anything. Apart from domestic consultancies the international IT recruitment companies have entered into India market for developing there business.

In metro cities almost on every main road you could find a recruitment consultancy. In all of these consultancies there would be hundreds of people working on the IT clients.

Pet Peeve #1

As if the newspapers, TV, blogosphere and airwaves are not already inundated with political ads...now at my work in box? I don't think so. On a daily basis I get political ads or messages sent to me by candidates. My response, "Please do not send political messages to my work email address. It is unprofessional." My message is pretty clear yet leaves the door open for appropriate and professional correspondence.

What would you do?

Digging Into Recruitingblogs.com v1.4

May is traditionally a slow month for Recruiting communities. Actual Recruiting and the avalanche of trade shows get in the way of hobnobbing with peers. It's no surprise that the longer more thoughtful postings are a little on the light side right now.

That means it's a great time to stand out and make a name for yourself. One of the real tricks in the development of a reputation in an online community is a sense of timing. Jumping into the fray when everyone else is piling on is one…

Once upon a time...

there was a jobless young woman in a small town with few prospects. Okay, the time was 1998, the young woman was me and the small town was in MN. I was devestated after losing my job in leasing finance in the family business and realizing no local finance institution would hire me due to conflict of interest. It left me scared and clueless about what what direction to go in life.

My friend, Julie was interning at a international recruiting agency. I was always fascinatd by the crazy… Continue

Can't afford to hire locally

not hiring remotely was the most costly mistake I ever made in business. If the best person for the job is in Iowa, why was I hiring somebody in Florida who I'd end up firing six weeks later?

New not necessarily better

We’ve all seen it. Summertime is over and you head back to school and inevitably there is a new girl on that first day. Of course, everyone suddenly wants to date her and is falling all over themselves to do so. Why? It could be any number of reasons, but the real answer is that’s she’s new. That’s it, but in our society, as we all know, new is better. Ok maybe not everyone believes this, but that doesn’t stop every IT professional from pulling the high school equivalent when a new company… Continue

All we have is our reputation

When I read the article "Former HR Chief at AIG, Others Charged in Alleged Headhunting Scam" late last year in Workforce Magazine, I was extremely disappointed that the recruiting profession was exposed to this negative press regarding a situation that was extremely avoidable.
