How to follow up after the telephone interview

In today’s economy, there are a lot of people applying for the few jobs available. I know this because I’m one of the people doing the applying.

My question is: How long should I wait after a first telephone interview before concluding the employer isn’t interested in me?

Let’s assume I’ve already sent an appropriate thank you note and called a couple days after to confirm it was received (I do). What then?

On the one hand, I don’t want to be pestering the… Continue

LinkedIn... Its’ Unorthodox Use Revealed!

The creators of LinkedIn developed this Social Media Business Network to allow its users to connect to a network of your Trusted Professional contacts where you can make better use of your professional network and help the people you trust in return. They also go on to say:

No time for the Price is Right

I have been sick for the past several days from a cold that seems to be making it around the city. While I was at work the other day pale as a ghost I was told to go home and rest before I make others sick as well. Rest sounded great as it is exactly what I needed to help get rid of this cold however, my Blackberry that I love so much has become my greatest enemy in my quest for rest.…

"3 Reasons I'll Read Your Resume"

I heard it again today, “I’ve applied to 300 jobs in the last month.”

WHAT????

Why would anyone waste their time like that? Sounds to me like this person was simply doing the “Click and Go” dance with his computer. I certainly understand the desperation that comes with the economic climate we all live in today, but I’m concerned.

If a…

Candidates & Companies Should Talk More

Internet users are leveraging social media for a wide variety of purposes. From complaining about being bumped off a Southwest flight to providing real-time natural disaster reporting, the social web is increasingly changing the way we communicate with each other online. This shift has important implications for the way companies and candidates will connect during job recruiting.

Over the next several years, I believe the social web will become increasingly useful for companies and… Continue

The sea of CVs

First of all - I'm not a recruiter but work at BlueSky - a PR consultancy that specialises in PR for the recruitment sector, so it's a subject we're pretty involved with. And at the moment we're recruiting ourselves. This is where we are put in our clients’ shoes and have to put all that recruiting knowledge we have gained to the test! I’ve written various pieces on how to write a good CV and the likes over the last couple of years, but I guess I have always assumed that people know the basics.… Continue

Resume Roulette - Paper does not = people.

We all know that technology has made it very easy to advertise and receive applications. My belief is that it has made it too easy. Anyone can and will apply for every job that you post regardless of education/experience required and salary.

It is exciting to see the “number” of new applicants to your job post and that excitement soon turns to frustration when you realize that most if not all of them are not nearly qualified and/or live across a national border. I get it, but now is… Continue

How many pages should my CV be

The question of how many pages a CV or resume should be? arises frequently, so I’ve had a google around at advice on length of CV on the web and found that opinions differ. In order to try to provide you with some sensible advice I thought I’d ask the very people who should know how long a CV should be, whose opinions really matter, and those who will be making a judgement on you based on your Curriculum Vitae – the end employers and Human Resource managers. So in order to write this article… Continue

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap!

This came up on my ipod this week and from the week I've had, I really related. (plus it put me in a great mood to get me going for the day!) Putting it bluntly I've had to play the role of bastard a lot this week.

As per an earlier post, I had to tell a couple of people they were dreaming in their expectations. I had to tell some contractors they weren't going to be renewed, I got a bit narky with some vendors and put some really tough deliverables on some… Continue

Thanks for the interview - No Thanks

Beware the dreaded follow up letter from the candidate thanking you, or worse, thanking your client for interviewing him/her. In all cases there is little/nothing to gain and everything to lose. In almost all cases the candidate makes an error – spelling, grammatical, or factual; and the error is picked up by the reader and it’s game over. Today I received such a letter in the form of an email. “Steve, thanks for the interview….. Please tell Mr Smith that I will be available to speak with… Continue

The Secret Law of Business Attraction

I've come to the conclusion that most of life is just like dating--the job search, climbing the corporate ladder, or working as a consultant. Generally speaking in life everyone is out to make a connection, a sale, more money, or their soul mate. The law of attraction is widely accepted and thought of in a romantic context. And since most business relationships require a form of emotion, attraction,…

Is green the next opportunity for recruiters?

Unless you've been living under a rock lately you've probably heard talk of green/cleantech energy as the linchpin of the 21st century economy.

Over the past year and a half I have started a number of green job boards to take advantage of this trend. After seeing first hand, the number and types of jobs being created I am convinced more than ever of this industry's potential. I've also…
