Clients Can Outsource the "Hidden Costs" of Workers' Comp

When the phrase "Lost Time" is brought up in referrence to Workers' Compensation claims, it usually refers to the money that must be paid to a worker injured on the job to make up for the wages they lose while they are unable to work.  The longer workers are out, the more lost time benefits that must be paid, which results in higher Workers' Comp premiums for your clients at renewal time. But there is another form of "Lost Time" that can be just as costly to your clients.

That is the…

Indeed: the elephant in the room – or just the same old friendly puppy?

Go to any animal shelter and you will usually see pets that simply got too big for their owners – hulking St. Bernards, twelve-foot pythons, walking catfish, and so on. It’s easy in hindsight to blame the owners. But the owners weren’t thinking about how big the animal would one day become; they were focused on how much they wanted it.

Since roughly 2005, job boards have lived with aggregators such as …

The basics on managing the flood of resumes

According to the January HWOL report from the Conference Board , just over 2.5 million NEW jobs were advertised online in January, an increase of 16.1% from December, and a jump of 12.1% over the number of new jobs advertised in January of 2010.

Vendor Management System Verdict

Remember back when offshoring was all the rage? Companies thought setting up an office in India was the Holy Grail for saving money, but it was actually a disaster. Time differences, communication issues, and employee frustration all accounted for causing more harm to a company than the money spent to have a unified team in one area.

Today, companies are employing a new hiring method to try and counter costs with the use of Vendor Management Systems. A VMS is a computer program that…

What IS a talent community anyway?

I keep hearing so much hot air and bluster from social media 'experts' about how talent communities are the way to go. But what does it all mean?

My understanding is that the idea is that companies try and make their customers, or in this instance, potential candidates, talk to each other. Engage in a cosy little chat within an online community with the notion of sharing information, opinion, ideas etc. But why???

Overshadowed only by marriage and buying a home, an individual's…

US Job Market grows 6.1% in February 2011

Okay, here we are in March 2011 and the job market in the US has finally begun to expand again. After a promising start in 2010, activity was fairly lackluster during the second half of the year running up to the mid-term elections. When we entered 2011 employers did not increase their postings for the first two weeks and we thought the recession may come back (has it actually ended yet?). Then, towards the end of January things started to move and postings increased. It continued through…

Reactive Twitter Pals

This Twitter pal sent me a Direct Message. So I asked him a few questions and he went sour on me. First look at his bio:

  • Bio: Pithy, humorous, educational and hopefully thought provoking tweets from this Christian strategic thinking Human Resources Executive.

Then look at his actions: First the smilies. Then his true…

Gatekeepers, Telephones & Targets

I recruit niche, in demand technical skills across the UK and Europe, technical skills that companies are continually looking to hire, as well as wanting to retain.

It is becoming more evident that companies do not want their prize technical assets taken away from them by “head hunters” and are implementing a variety of methods to ensure their technical staffs are not being poached.

Here are some of the ploys companies are using to make sure their…

Live & Learn: Lessons from James Franco

This past Sunday evening, James Franco and Anne Hathaway co-hosted the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, celebrating excellence in acting, film making, music and much more.  The two actors starred in a variety of different promotional commercials leading up to the big event, poking a little fun at the ways each were preparing for the show (everything from learning ballroom dancing to avoiding… Continue

Social Media Potholes for Temp Staffing

Social Media, recently and over the past few years, has gotten bigger and bigger. With websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and many others, a whole new path of interaction for staffing businesses has been opened. It gives companies a chance to make new connections with potential candidates and customers. Just like with anything, there are many great ways it can be utilized by Temporary Staffing firms, but there are also a number of things to look out for if you want to make sure to use…

The End of the South African Recruitment Industry.

New Legislation proposed in South Africa could see the end of the Recruitment industry as we currently know it. It is proposed to outlaw all forms of temporary and contract recruitment forcing all employers to employ staff on a permanent basis only.

This will of course have very dramatic effects for the industry and the millions of temporary and contract workers currently employed in South Africa whose employers will be forced to offer permanent employment or terminate…

Beware of Thieving Employees and Increased Industrial Espionage

Make no mistake, industrial espionage is on the rise.  That and an increase in employee theft have given more than one executive premature gray hairs.   Large multi-national corporations and smaller business entities are all vulnerable.  All you need is something the other guy wants.   It can be everything from advanced, first in your space technology to intellectual property.  It can be sensitive databases, customer rosters, proprietary data.

Call it a sign of the times or the…
