Back in the day…… one of the most important obstacles in securing your dream job (other than skills, interviews & receiving the offer) was getting a good reference from your previous employers. These days there’s an extensive social media list of obstacles to consider aswell i.e. Google,…

“Facebook and Sourcing? Nah…”
The debate about Facebook’s revolutionary role in online sourcing rages on. Some recruiters, citing the site’s reputation as a purely social networking site, claim that its informal atmosphere seemingly precludes any serious professional networking (a niche filled by LinkedIn). Simply put, they say, Facebook users log-on to have fun, not to look for jobs.
On the contrary. As a corporate recruiter,…

Recently Indeed.com a meta Job Search Engine and Job Aggregator revealed a Resume Search option - a gift for recruiters - which is currently free by the way - check it out here:
This new resume search option reads just like a LinkedIn Profile in Feel and has no real phone or email contact information - but employers can sign up for the service and send a secure message to the candidates…

Helping those looking for work!!!!!!!!! Part 3 The Job of finding a Job!!
So given the unemployment rate went up a week or so ago, I thought I would repost a 3 part series I did about a year ago on resumes, finding a job and more. So here we go.
Part 2
The Job of finding a Job!!
That is right finding a job is a job, if you cannot commit a minimum of 3-4 hours a day looking, than you will…

This is an old post from my blog "The Recruiting Unblog.", but as there have been a few posts recently on the topic of Twitter and Recruiters, I thought it was worth sharing. David Palmer asks"Does twitter do anything for recruiters?. This is how one recruiter figured out how to source from Twitter, and got great results. Be glad to hear of other success story's, and no…

What’s the percentage of hires to resumes in your company in a given year? I bet you’d be surprised to hear that it’s on average only about five percent. So that means that 95% of the resumes you receive are not part of your companies recruitment strategy. Many great hires could not be made because candidates turned down your offers due to compensation, job location, lack of interest in…

The thing I have learned from being a sales person and recruiter...never sell anyone anything without making them a friend first...may not always apply but it does help.:)

I just realized my last blog post was about 3 years ago. Titled Social Networking and Jobs Board. IF you think about it – 3 years ago, there was very, very little or none SN elements on any job board. All this Branch Out, Be Found and clones like Talent me have happened in the last 12 months actually. I wrote about in in 2008!
The fact that I am still working on the same…

I want to hear from you - really I do. I want honest, blunt and clever feedback.
I am the Director of a smallish recruitment agency with major accounts and jobs rolling in the door - but that's not success.
Success is:
a) FINDING great consultants and;
b) KEEPING them
I take responsibility for (b) and by and large we don't lose high performing consultants because we value them so highly - but we are small and I would love some…

Early on in my career when I was responsible for Nortel Networks recruiting I was approached by top sales executives to find out how I could help them win a key telecom account worth millions possibly billions in revenue.
The account was held by Cisco and the customer loved the Cisco sales executive and sales engineer that supported them. The team, lets call…

I am always amazed when I am approached by a client who has a retention problem. It’s always interesting to note that they have not dealt with some of the small things that can be done to somewhat lock the door from the barbarians at the gate, those pesky headhunters.
Rule #1: Make sure employee/telephone directories are not available for download and make it extremely difficult for anyone including employees to print or copy it. It’s incredible how…

I talk to professional recruiters everyday. I am often asked how relevant the social media world really is to a recruiter. We discuss LinkedIn and the prevalance of custom applications being built for the recruiting industry. We talk about the opportunity to connect in mass with great talent, or connect very specifically with that one candidate you can't find - using Facebook and other social properties. But the numbers really speak for themselves. Both B2C and B2B companies are present…

I was recently reading how BT were warning their recruitment suppliers to not discriminate against disabled candidates (why would they in the first place if their client did not??) or they’d be off the PSL and it occurred to me how beholden Recruiters have become to their Clients.
Now that candidates are relatively easy to track down and recruitment is being taken in-house, Recruitment Consultants need to find a USP that will change the balance of power and stop the…

I don’t have much time for it and I’m no expert but I do get that others see personal and commercial value in it. The very fact that people may be talking about you or your business on it means you need to adopt some sort of position - don’t you?
As far as Recruitment Consultants are concerned I see no value in it directly. Will you attract candidates? Will you attract Clients? Will you shape your brand? Is anyone listening? Probably not!
However there are a…

Well, hello recruiting world. I have been reading the blogs on here with interest and decided to dive in myself.
Tiny bit of background on me and then I'll get on to my topic of choice. I'm working for an RPO organisation in Manchester UK on their business development/recruitment improvement/training/marketing side of things (yes, this means I am ALWAYS busy!) I'm relatively new to recruitment, having joined the industry in December 2009, but am very taken with it. What could…

CVs have changed. Instead of going round your local businesses with a folder full of CVs, handing them out and knowing people will read them, the majority of CVs are submitted as part of an online application process and now, there are even CVs that take the form of web pages – all in order to help people stand out more to try and help them get read.
With the amount…

Last week I received a call from prospective client who was struggling with a high staff turnover. He pleaded with me to help him stem the outflow. He is a small manufacturer that sells his products largely through distributors. I arranged to visit his offices in the Eastern suburbs the next day.
As I pulled into his carpark it wasn’t hard to spot his Porsche parked next to the front door. Upon entering the building it looked as though the premises hadn’t been renovated since…
