How do your actions affect others? If you’re a happy & positive person going into work everyday with a smile on your face and a can do attitude, how does that reflect upon colleagues? Personally I think it impacts greatly on how you’re perceived; it can turn a frown upside down quite literally. Keep a positive outlook and remember to bring it with you everyday, it will help you become more balanced and help…

I’m not really a fan of job fairs. We do attend, and have had some luck lately; but over the last 10+ years in recruiting that has been the exception, not the norm. What I hate most about job fairs is talking to hundreds of people who are more interested in my squishy ball swag than my company and probably have no idea who we are or what we do. I hate leaving job fairs with a box full of resumes that I will never look at again. I also really hate never hearing back from the one or two…

There is much going through my mind as we approach this weekend. Whether it is still the challenges of facing life or remaining steadfast I have to look at those whose lives were changed over 10 years ago. I am sure the healing continues, the hope needed must be renewed, and life goes on.
On that fateful day I was getting ready for my statistics test, and in Silicon Valley, CA, USA the world was just waking up to the knowledge that something was wrong on the east coast. …

Tweet chats are conversations or discussions which take place using Twitter. I had the honour of taking part in two of them this week, (#radchat on Tuesday evening and #T-chat on Wednesday evening) and was impressed with what I saw. The passion which people displayed when expressing their points on a particular question was nothing short of contagious.
As a relative new-comer to the experience, I fully expected to just observe; meaning sit at my PC and watch the…

Effectively executing your employer branding strategy can have long-lasting benefits, states John Sullivan in a recent ERE.net article. One key tactic towards this goal is using online videos to convey your employer branding messages. In today’s world of instant communication, videos, like any visual…

Any time i have to pick a number between 1 and 10 i pick 7. I always have. I don't know why it just is what it is. I like the way 7 looks when i write it or type it.
For years i had 7 recruiters on staff. When one quit or i fired one i would hire one more, never over 7 and never under 7. If somebody came along who wanted to join the team i had to tell them that they would have to wait until somebody moved, quit or died then i would give them a call. I once called a guy and…

It has been a week since #truLondon and we covered a lot of content. Something that stood out for me or made me think, and there was plenty of things that stood out in the memory bank. I’m going to kick off with one I’d love to hear your thoughts:
#truLondon thought 1: Lazy Recruiters
Igotmore annoyed in one…

Building your Talent Network isn’t just about getting as many recruiting contacts into your database as possible. The focus instead needs to be in getting as many interested AND qualified candidates as possible into your Talent Network. Cause let’s face it, your Talent Network is only as valuable as the candidates in it.
So where do you start? While I’ve gone over ways to…

Yesterday was Labor Day, and my local newspaper ran excerpts from people talking about their first jobs. Thought I’d share mine, and I invite you to write me about yours!
At age 11, the Bronx Butcher Shop that supplied our family with meat hired me, ostensibly to do deliveries. Deliveries aren’t non-stop at a small local butcher, so in between, I kept the place…

I’m obviously a huge fan of what social media is doing in the world of recruitment. I genuinely am. I’m truly excited by the way digital social platforms are shaking up recruitment & selection as a whole.
The reason for this post is to try and calm some of the sensationalism and general BS doing the rounds. Not that I want to be a downer to anyone’s…

The main goal of any brand is to sell a skill, service, or knowledge. That is exactly what you want to do with your personal brand. Point out your skills and strengths that are unique and use them to set yourself apart from the crowd. Take time to think about who you are professionally, then write it down and decide how you want to communicate this to others.
There are plenty of social media options out there, in fact,…

As regular followers of this blog will know, I work as a Rec-to-Rec consultant (i.e. I recruit recruiters for recruitment companies – say that after a few glasses of wine!). I recently received a call from the owner of an agency explaining that he had heard good things about me and could I meet with him to discuss helping him find new consultants. As always, I was upfront about my fees and in return for some commercial advantages and as a gesture of good will I agreed to a 1% discount, which…

Are first impressions really that important? The answer is... YES!
When the decision comes to hire a new employee, the candidates that are chosen almost always will share similar educational backgrounds, skills and experience. Because of this, it can be the small things that make the difference between getting the job or not. A lousy handshake or dirty shoes can be all it takes to…

After you’ve identified your company’s Customer Value Proposition (CVP), and understand the difference between how potential candidates perceive your company and what you want them to think, it’s important to take charge and implement your employer branding plan.
Amongst all of your branding elements lies the idea of generating employment buzz. This motivates your employees to share their enviable work experiences with their…

The exclamation mark is known informally as a bang or a shriek. It’s frequently used in fiction and then mostly to express strong feeling in spoken dialogue.
There are broadly 3 types of people who use exclamations marks when writing:
Clients don’t want their recruitment agencies to be any of these things – which makes the fact that some consistently use exclamation marks in their job…

A couple weeks ago I started attending a local jobs networking group at a church near my home in Frisco. I am not sure why I felt compelled to show up, but I wanted to go see what it was all about. I have to be honest, I think it was one of the best decisions I could have made for my own career.
It was weird, walking in to a room of people that are under or un-employed when not only do I have a job, I have a job helping other people get jobs. The group didn't make me feel…
