Be honest. If there is one part of the recruiting process that most recruiters would rather not do themselves, would
rather that someone else, anyone else, take responsibility for doing (someone in HR, hiring manager), and sometimes don’t even see the need…

My client hired someone after 5 months without telling me according to my contract they owe me the whole fee. The applicant left the job 3 months later because the job was misrepresented. I lowered my fee to 10% of the annual fee to make the client someone happy and now they have told me they only want to pay me 10% of the applicants earnings. This is absurd. Do you have any suggestions. I may have to take legal action. This is not a good client to mine it is first placement I made with…

Not a day goes by that I don't get an email or two letting me know someone appreciated the forms available in the Recruiting Library. It's a project well worth my time and effort - to give back to the community.
I need your help. I have all kinds of requests for various forms/letters, etc. that are just not in my day to day business. Got an email last night asking if I had an "Exclusive Contingency" agreement. …

Far from being a passive way of looking for a new job, getting the most out of working with a recruitment agency requires input from the candidate’s side too. Agencies will give you access to industry knowledge, market information and jobs that aren’t advertised directly, as well as support and advice with your general career management. We have included some generic advice here in relation to what to do and what not to do to enable a recruitment agency to assist you in the most…

With the close of 2012 only a few months away, many people are trying to everything in order before the end of the year. From buying presents for the holidays to getting your house ready for winter, there’s a number of things that need to get done before the end of the year. And somewhere on that list is a end of the year doctor check-up (I know it’s on mine) to make sure you’re healthy for the holidays and the beginning of the new year.
For organizations, the end of the…

I am contemplating grad school for next year. I am stumped on which major would be most beneficial to me in this career. I am just starting out as a recruiter (agency). I was thinking Human Resource Management, even though I know my job is not "HR" and more of a sales profession. I feel knowing more about HR would help me as a recruiter in general, whether I stay as an agency recruiter, or eventually go on to being a corporate recruiter. Any thoughts on this? Anyone with a Master's Degree?…

It seems the more ways they invent for us to communicate, the worse we become at it.
Email is pretty old-school these days (and I believe smart companies will replace it, internally at least, with a social communications chat-type format), but I am still constantly amazed and frustrated by the sloppy way many people use it.
Most days I get 100 plus emails, and even discounting the ‘spammy’ ones, about half of those need not have come to me at all.
Meet 5 “e-mail…

Over the course of several years – be it 10 or 40 – you leave a wake behind you that represents the impact you've made. Recruiters traditionally relied on your resume to tell them about your career arc, but today a lot is being written about how your electronic footprint may be a better, more complete representation of your professional mark.
I have fully embraced social media as a grand, open marketplace of resource communication, coordination and exchange. I saw early on that this…

A coworker of mine absolutely detests the phrase, "Recruiting is a lot like dating." She says it's cliche and trite; and she is right. The problem, though, with cliches and all things trite, is that they are true.
Why is bears repeating that Recruiting is a lot like Dating:

Thoughts from the road…
There are a lot of people talking about the best way to pump on their employment brand these days as they prepare for the recovery, which either has started, is getting ready to start or is still a couple of years away depending on your point of view…
Here’s the deal about your employment brand – you can’t make it up and make it what you want it to be. Like your culture, it already exists. Can you move it over time? Sure, with some hard work. But back to…

Tis the season for giving, especially in the corporate world. As the economy struggles to get back on its feet, many vendors take this opportunity to remind their clients how lucky they are to have their business.
This is the time for departments to dig deep into their pockets (ok, maybe not that deep) and shell out some cash for that bottle of booze or fruitcake that will hopefully see their relationship through to another year.
If you’re like me and you’ve been lucky enough…

“Never give up, never slow down
Never grow old, never ever die young.”
Lyrics from James Taylor’s Never Die Young
While listening to Never Die Young, I heard, embedded in the words of James Taylor, the following advice:
Never give up…on why you chose your profession. Take a moment today and each day hereafter to recall what compelled you to serve others, whether they be inside or outside your organization.
Never slow down…on the actions that change lives…
