What Does Your Resume Say About You?

When you hear the saying “a picture tells a thousand words”, this means that a picture can tell a story just as easily as a large amount of text. The same is true about your professional resume. Your resume can tell the reader a lot about the type of person you are and the type of worker you will be.

During one of my earliest roles as a recruiting agent, I was…

Using Pay-Per-Click Advertising as a Tool to Attract Passive Candidates

While online sourcing brings definite benefits to recruitment campaigns, the sheer vastness of the World Wide Web means that sometimes it can be difficult to direct your focus and find the holy grail of top-tier candidates.

Have you ever considered pay-per-click advertising? Think of it this way.  Suppose someone searches Youtube for your company’s latest viral video or catchy commercial ad. While they originally searched for your videos because they were looking for some…

IRS Retains High-Low Per Diem Method

The IRS has decided to continue allowing businesses to use the High-Low Substantiation Method to determine per diem rates and has updated the rates under that method.

Businesses often choose to pay a per diem rate to workers in positions away home rather than reimbursing the actual cost of each expense. This is especially common with contractors because they often relocate temporarily for their contract assignments.

The High-Low…

Years VS Quality!!

Years VS Quality!!

When reviewing a resume or writing a

job description there is always thought given to years of experience. But the

question is, is it really years of experience that is most important or the

quality of what was done that is the most important.

Let’s say you need a recruiter, but

the emphasis is on sourcing. 90% of the job is going to be sourcing and you

want 8 years of experience as a recruiter.…

A Lesson for Recruiters, Corporate Gatekeepers/HR and Hiring Managers from Steve Jobs

A Toast “to the crazy ones,” by Steve Jobs

Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is…

Cloud-Based Adoption Increasing and Hiring Demand Continues

Over the past 2 years, companies have invested heavily in cloud-based applications, due to cost savings in the current economy and overall process improvement. In a recent survey about cloud computing by Forbes and KPMG, 81% of the responding organizations said they have already moved business activities to the cloud and expect to…

What The Economic Future Holds

It is anyone's guess.  In the wake of the week I heard many negative diatribes from Monday Morning Quarterbacks who think the US is going to hell in a handbasket.  Among these important and tell tale moments this week:

1.  A sad situation regarding a disgruntled employee who turned guns on fellow co-workers in my home town in Silicon Valley.  It ended with police having to shoot back and eventually leaving the tragedy in an end with the gunman dead.  The news media focused on this…

Almost Famous-Recruiter Groupies.

As recruiters, it certainly bothers us when we are calling around and find out that the position we are pitching has been marinating in the market sauce for months.  It kind of takes the spice off the meatball, so to speak (I bring everything back to food or wine eventually)

What about when you have been working with a candidate fairly closely, with good vibes coming in both directions, so you connect with him on linkedin.

Scrolling through her connections, you find…

Five Myths About Job Searching:

#1: The smartest person always gets the job

Definitely not true – companies these days are more interested in the complete worker. Having brains is always an advantage, but it's not the only thing that hiring managers are looking for. In today’s economy, an employer wants to know that, if required, you are able to…

What I learned in Vegas: #HRTechConf Wrap-Up

The 14th annual HR Technology Conference didn't disappoint in Vegas this year. Not only was this the biggest collection of rockstar attendees at the conference to date but the breakout and main panel discussions were the best I've seen them. I also love the addition of HR Tech Connect to enable attendees to interact before the event.

From the main / breakout sessions to the expo hall, here are my thoughts and observations on a great few days in Vegas:

Scanning the…

Benchmarking the MacArthur Grants

Many years ago I wrote an article called “Benchmarking the Baldrige Awards” in which I discussed how all companies could act as if they were chasing what was then the gold standard for quality operations, even if they couldn’t meet all the criteria.  Such high aspirations would enable even small companies to create “performance excellence” they found in bigger, more established companies, and thereby, move in that direction themselves.…

No Client, I will not send your ideal candidate

Would you hire this individual? Most of my clients won't.

I thought of adding this to the rant forum but thought other RBC members might have experienced similar situations. Perhaps there is more that I can be doing.

As many of you know I recruit…

Common Sense Vs. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Mobile

Every recruiter evangelist and solutions vendor out there today is banging his drum telling corporations why they need to be on and develop a recruiting strategy for Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and mobile. All I can say is of course! You dont’ need to be one of these evangelist to figure that out. Maybe they have been spending a little too much time in the sun or maybe they…

President Obama Moves to Make "Unemployed Discrimination" Illegal

Over the past year or so, many people have gotten up in arms over job ads that specifically state that unemployed candidates will not be considered for open positions. Now the practice has caught President Obama's attention.

Included in the jobs bill that Obama has been pushing over the past couple of weeks is the Fair Employment Opportunity Act of 2011.  This act would effectively make "unemployed discrimination" illegal, according to the Society for…

Is it Time to Rethink Your (Mobile) Webdesign?

Have you looked at your website in your mobile browser lately?

If it looks a little uncomfortable, all squished in that tiny screen, it might be time to contemplate redesigning your site for mobile users.

If you aren’t providing your mobile users a great experience, they’ll be bouncing off to greener pastures as soon as they hit your website on their smartphone or tablet…

Why Recruitment Agencies Need To Become Pigs

Bear with me on this one.

It must be searingly obvious to anyone who works in recruitment that recruitment agencies (and more specifically the people therein) are receiving a lot of flak at the moment – most of it around their oafish sales tactics and their diminishing ability to deliver a viable recruitment service to either the company or the candidate.

With the advent of the Internet came a lot of predictions that it would spell the end of recruitment…
