Sourcing and Recruiting Passive Candidates

I was recently chatting with some HR professionals regarding the age-old question over whether active or passive candidates are better recruits. In my opinion, the recruiters preferring passive won the debate. Their argument was simply a matter of control. Sourcing for passive candidates puts the recruiter in the driver’s seat as they look for candidates with specific experience and/or skill sets.

Obviously there were other reasons why recruiters prefer passive candidates, but this…

Leaving the dark side – how agency experience benefits the in-house recruiter

They say doctors make the worst patients – is the same true for ex-agency consultants who move in-house? Sometimes, certainly. Take a recent case when one of my colleagues drove to the other end of the country (a 5 hour drive) for a client meeting scheduled at 4pm. This was a new client, there was no history, good or bad and so this should have been an amiable introduction to form the foundation for the relationship going forward. Instead he received a frosty response and a grilling for 40…

Creating the Yet

Last week, I conducted a workshop at Staffing World in Las Vegas where we discussed how creating the “yet” is one of the most important jobs in sales. What does it mean to create the yet? First, you listen for the yet moments from prospective buyers, which often come in four common variations:

  • We have no needs.
  • We’re not buying.
  • We don’t work with firms like yours.
  • We’re not adding any other vendors.

When you hear this, you first need to…

Six Things To Do When Your Career Confidence Is Shattered

Saturday night I was watching the ALCS. The Detroit Tigers were playing the New York Yankees. Coming into the playoffs, the Tigers were one of the hottest teams in baseball. Baseball had its first triple crown winner in 45 years with Miguel Cabrerra, and the team fought their way through an up and down season and won their…

The Title Virtual Recruiter

I have always said, “in America, just give it a name".

We have certainly, come along ways, in HR recruiting across industries. Back in the early 90’s, when I begin recruiting CDL Drivers; I was referred to as a broker or Head-hunter.

So often, operation managers would comment on how, I was able to work from home and produce drivers they themselves could not find; with their twenty-years of experience. And that was long before the birth of internet.

Today,…

The unkindest cut of all…is it deserved?

Many times when talent acquisition leaders ask for assistance in coaching their recruiters, they say the awful “O” word—order taker.

When is it right to accept a counter offer?

Having recently read a number of blogs on this subject I feel compelled to write this as I believe most articles are very one sided in their viewpoint. Most are focused on outlining to candidates the many reasons why, when they resign, they should not be tempted to stay by a counter offer. I don’t think I have read anything explaining the reasons why you SHOULD accept a counter offer but here’s the thing - there are times and there are circumstances when…

Ask and You Shall Receive

By Carmen Lapham, Director of Recruiting and Operations, Q4B

Someone once asked me to give them some advice about the recruiting business and my thoughts on what it takes to be a successful recruiter.

Most of the answers that I gave were pretty straight forward, namely, you have to be persistent, willing to take rejection after rejection; you have to…

This is my 3rd year attending the HR Technology Conference and one of my favorite sessions the last 2 years has been the Candidate Experience Awards.  There are a number of companies doing some great things in thinking about what they need to do to improve the candidate experience.  By really focusing on their recruiting processes to create an environment for better communication,…

2 Simple Tips for Making Your Client Interactions Stickier

For many recruiters, it’s feast or famine. But that doesn't have to be your fate. Like a grubby-handed grade-schooler, the more fingerprints you can leave on your client, the more consistency you can enjoy in your cash flow.

Keeping pristine records, and expanding your line of services can help stave-off the hunger-pangs that come with the ebb and flow of life as an agency recruiter.

Keep Better…

The Culture Wars

How important is company culture to recruiters? I’m not talking about so called “discrimination masquerading as cultural fit”. If you’re looking to read up on that check out this post from back in April.

My question is simply this – should recruiters screen candidates for culture fit with our clients?

Like so many things in recruiting –…

Learning to Love What You Do : A three part series in finding your dream job and loving it!

I remember the moment vividly... I had just finished performing in my Junior Year musical and I was handed a card from my principal. On the front was a quote:

“Do what you love, love what you do, and deliver more than you promise.”

From that moment on, it became my life motto. I followed my dreams and went to college for music! And it wasn’t until much later that I realized that Doing what you love does not necessarily yield…

I Scream, You Scream ...for IT Talent

I had a craving this morning. No, I've far passed the age of pickles and ice cream but not beyond a craving now and then. For some unknown reason, I wanted baked beans and pink lemonade. For breakfast. Now maybe this craving had more to do with the status of my empty cupboards than mindfully choosing those items.  My first thought was “I can’t eat that for breakfast”.  Well, why not.  It’s time to step out of the comfort zone.

Now dollars to donuts (I’m still hungry), you think I ate…

The Dark Side of Gen Y

I wasn't 100% sure what the show was going to be about today.

The guest is not a recruiter. She's a 24 year old marketing grad and her story is very different from the claims of Gen Y Triumphalism we were hearing a few years ago.

The conclusion I drew from the conversation was that Generation Y is not…
