5 Reasons Your Online Job Application Did Not Catch My Attention

Are you sending tons of resumes on job ads but do not even get an answer? Here may be why:

Recruiters both in HR departments or recruitment agencies/ search firms receive a large number of resumes every day and we have to decide within 5-10 seconds if we call up the candidate or not. The “Leitmotiv” of my job – professional recruitment - is to find similarities between the job and the applicant, the skills of the person in front of me and the job…

How Long Does a Headhunt Take?

“How long will this headhunt take?” was often my question when I was looking for a senior manager in a past life. The headhunter would stare back, think for a moment, and tell me, “that depends…..”

How I would learn to hate that answer! And I was mug enough to swallow it!…

10 Reasons Every Recruiter Must Start With an Agency

It was 1995, I had just graduated from Ole Miss, the Harvard of the South.  I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do for a career.  I was considering moving to Memphis, Tennessee, but I had no leads, so I packed my things and moved back to Austin, Texas.  After all, I was 22 and I had no money what- so- ever.

I had met with most of my parent's…

Are you in the right job for your talents? Do you

My grandfather, who was a very wise man, gave me great advice many years ago. He said that "life is too short to be miserable at your job. If you're that unhappy, it's time to go and do something else."

Of course, there are always circumstances that…

2012 - Reflections on a Staffing Journey Through an Eventful Year

I needed a chance to collect my thoughts, with so much crowding in in the holiday season, with work busier than ever, and with family holiday moments seizing the stage, one must remember why they do things - and what drives us forward in our careers.

It is in this journey where you find the greatest relief, the greatest lessons, and the greatest outcomes and achievements.  Staffing isn't just about filling jobs, and having family isn't just about having relationships. …

Standing up to the Hiring Manager (HM)!!

Standing up to the Hiring Manager (HM)!!

One of the biggest issues I see with staffing professionals is an unwillingness or inability to stand up to their HM and present a case for why the job description is bad, or why they need to pay more, or why what they are looking for does not exist within the confines they…

Compelling question to ask at the interview (1)

So the interview is going well with you in truly fine form, and suddenly there is a lull. It can happen and will on occasions. The said lull can even be manufactured in order to test your interpersonal and communication skills.

Whether you are faced with this dilemma or simply wish to better understand the motivations of your next boss, I would encourage executives to ask the following question. Tell me about your management style and how you typically get the very best results from… Continue

Why you should never accept a counter-offer

There have been plenty of articles written on this but a post “Why Counter Offers Are Good (except for headhunters)” on recruitingblogs.com by Amos spurred me to write about this for my audience. I was incredulous to read his article whole heartedly encouraging his candidates to elicit a counter-offer to get the promotion they want.…

How do I Add Value to the Relationship?

I recently was involved in a conference call with a prospective client who was asking me whether I would be available to come speak to their office meeting about how the staff could work closer with corporate HR professionals. I got off the call and began to look back to the time in my career when I was in the external recruiter's seat and what was important to me to establish that relationship.

So for what it is worth, here are my thoughts.

  1. The Toyota Production System…

Referrals

Like all of my fellow professionals I truly value referrals as they add considerably to my knowledge base. Referrals are always received in the same generous spirit that are they provided. Just recently I was provided a referral by a known and trusted candidiate, who in glowing terms endorsed the executive by providing me a detailed summary of her strengths. He also suggested that they enjoyed a previous professional relationship.

With the referees blessing I decided to act…

Why Your Recruiter Branding Matters!

Much has been said (and to my chagrin), about recruiters who are money hungry, blood sucking, pieces of …well you get the point. I would like to believe that recruiters love what they do and genuinely look out for the best interest of their candidates. After all, we’re all in this business to better the careers and quality of lives of people, right? A little money earned by recruiters doesn’t hurt…
