The Tail of the Tiger

Early last year, during the depth of the financial crisis, I had the opportunity to do market research in China for a major pharma firm. At the time, even highly employable R&D scientists and marketers were worried about the coming crisis. Conventional wisdom was, “when the developed world sneezes, the developing world catches a cold.”

Not so much this time. More like a sniffle. Though China’s economy has suffered—who can forget the breathtaking… Continue

What Twitter and F.R.E.E. have in Common

My last blog post received a lot of great feedback, especially my theory on F.R.E.E. and how it applies to using Twitter. I felt that it would be appropriate if I elaborated.

F. – F is for follow. I often think how Twitter is comparable to an ant farm. Without the ants there are not going to be any tunnels built to connect with other parts of the farm, but once you introduce ants into the ant farm they begin building connection tunnels almost immediately. In order for you to move on… Continue

Is The Director of Recruiting Screaming For Metrics? Be prepared to holler SO WHAT ?

Upon awakening I check my twitter feed for interesting blogposts. This is how I love to start my day.

Punk Rock HR, also known as Laurie Ruettimann wrote a compelling post. Social Recruiting Metrics & Measurements http://goo.gl/fb/032B.

I have a love-hate relationship with this topic and here’s why. There are many consulting firms that do an excellent job providing back end analysis. There are metrics tools that include impressive… Continue

MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN

Popularized by "mad men" marketing wonks in days gone by, "must be present to win" is the tag line you've heard a thousand times in contest rules. Face it, no one is going to hand you the keys to the pretty sports car in the window based on you scribbling your name on the equivalent of a cocktail napkin - you have to be there when the drawing is conducted with legitimate identification at the ready. With the evolution of online media, being "present" has taken on new meaning. With the a few… Continue

Recruiting Going Mobile in 2010

She who texts the fastest WINS!! OK, not really, but to be on the forefront of recruiting, mobile is where it's at. Think about this... In the month of January alone, I have sent 6,272 SMS messages. These messages served a variety of purposes. They were to friends, family, charities for donations, etc. I accomplish my main personal communications all through text. I am not saying that everyone is using text as much or even half as much, but you cannot deny it continues to grow. My son… Continue

It’s amazing what you can uncover when you visit customers.

Today I was dismayed reading a twitter feed from a recruiter boasting that she had managed to talk her way out of meeting with a client who wanted a face-to-face with her. When I queried her she went on to boast that with technology she no longer had to even visit clients.

I have been in sales for most of my career. I first learned to sell with Pitney Bowes PLC in the UK, a truly excellent and professional sales environment that gave me a grounding and a sales ability that has… Continue

Building Networks

Great recruiting goes far beyond referral programs. The most effective recruiters build on their personal connections and create a talent network. A talent network or “connectors” are a web of motivated people who know potential candidates and can bring those candidates to you. Below are a few ways develop your network:

  • Focus on developing a talent network rather than a talent pool.
  • Use your…

When I was in College obtaining my first degree I worked with students. I was a Diversity Advocate and later became a Resident Assistant and Residence Life Coordinator within the dormitories of the university. This was probably the subconscious start to my career within HR and Learning… Continue

Truth Be Told...

Aesop and Son I've been meaning to touch on this topic for a few months now - and I was just never able to find a gentle way to kick it off. I haven't been able to find a funny analogy or humorous quip to kick off an article that hits on such an important topic. And the more I thought about how I should start a talk about ethics in the workplace or within our industry the more I just kept coming… Continue

How important is Social Media to the recruitment industry?

Twitter, Xing, Facebook, MySpace, Flickr.......there is no escaping the continuing dominance of social media in the press. Just as you think you have got your head around it all, someone invites you to connect with them on the next big social networking platform. The question is, just how important is social media to the recruitment industry?

I must start with a confession. I am a big fan of social networking and Web 2.0 platforms and whilst the debate as to whether social media can… Continue

Using Social Media to Qualify Instead of Disqualify Candidates

As mentioned in an earlier post, Social Media sites should be used in the character reference portion of the background checking phase once you have narrowed down your top 10 or 3 candidates for the position. Avoid using these sites as the only verifying source for your candidate's skills, education and abilities. This would be a smart choice.

Don't Do This Yet

If you are still a little uncertain about using social media, then give yourself a little time to adjust, because… Continue

Picture worth a thousand words? LinkedIn thread debates for diversity

Should Minorities, Women and Seasoned (older) Workers post their picture on LinkedIN? This question on LinkedIn posted by Derrick Douglas MBA got 118 comments! Wow I am amazed at the perceptions and believe there is an obvious disconnect. One of my favorite activites working with companies is to identify chinks in their corporate armor in terms of Diversity Recruitment. This is where we look at the difference between what we say we value and how we show that. These comments generally ran in… Continue

Managing the 2-job employee

The era of the two-job employee (let us call him “Sam”) has emerged as a result of the global recession. Sam is a new breed who developed entrepreneurial survival skills to battle the recession, and learned how find and keep a second job.

You, the employer, do not need to be too alarmed if Sam takes on a second job as a baker, or a mechanic, because this would require Sam to be physically present at that location. However the situation is more complicated if Sam takes on a second job… Continue

How Does the Boss Tweet?

I really can't help it. I am a business owner with many internal employees as well as thousands of contractors and I blog, Tweet and, yes, Foursquare. While I try to avoid religion, politics and friends' most embarassing moments; I get personal and real and try to do onto others…

I struggle over this terrain. Using my weekend as an example, I enjoyed self-respect this morning in that I had governed myself by not publicizing attendance at Forty Deuce's Burlesque Cafe Was in West… Continue

Death of Cheezhead

I've recently noticed the Cheezhead and HRSEO domains are redirecting to Jobing.

You might ask.. So what?

Well for those of you who compete with Jobing, all of the back links (aka Google Juice) your blog or site was giving Cheezhead and HRSEO are now providing the "CheezJuice" to Jobing, resulting in a healthy heaping helping of "… Continue

Big 3 Recruiting Mistakes – Continued

I have received a lot of feedback on my post about recruiting mistakes personally and on Recruitingblogs .com. so why not continue the thought!

Reputation is HUGE, especially now with social networking and immediate feedback. People talk, especially when they feel like they have been treated unfairly.

Your reputation is a consideration at every level of your business. Here are some areas you may not have thought of:

How you advertise your positions. Are you targeting… Continue
