On candidate self-sabotage...

Quote for the Day: Friday, July 13th, 2007

Periodically, you may run into a Headhunter who seems to be somewhat jaded, rather skeptical, and appears to have had his sense of humor

surgically removed. Or, perhaps, you may run into one or two in your

life that don't act that way.

The reason for this attitude is that candidates frequently sabotage

their own job search efforts (while, in the process, taking food out of

the…

Do you like your job?

I think my friends are getting sick of listening to me. Well, they’ve

probably always been a little tired of listening to me talk since a) I

like to hear myself talk, so I can talk about nonsense for hours and b)

my voice sounds like a cross between a tortured hyena and a wounded

elephant. But, that aside, I think that my friends are very tired of

hearing me talk about how much I love my job. I look forward to my

“office days,” when I get to sit at the desk,… Continue

Politics and Stupidity

This has nothing whatsoever to do with recruiting...but it throttled me nonetheless.

So I'm driving in to the office this morning listening to the good ole NPR and they're doing yesterday's Capital Hill roundup rodeo of the Iraq debate, Harriet Meirs not appearing, etc... And they fired off two sound bytes; one from Jon Kyl from my home state (AZ) and one from Lindsey Graham from South Carolina.

Kyl: "The best way to support the troops is to support the troops"

Graham:… Continue

The Online Identity Calculator

After visiting Career Distinction and running its Online Identity Calculator on Tom Cruise yesterday (check the comments on the post), we started to wonder what would happen if we plugged in more people and sized them up on our blog, ranging from notable bloggers to CEO bloggers to CEOs with no direct social media… Continue

Will Kijiji Destroyroy Newspapers?

The daily newspaper industry, already in shambles, received more bad news recently with ebay’s U.S. launch of Kijiji. Despite the challenging name, the site is basically an exact replica of Craigslist

which ebay invested $25 million in a few years ago (so much for

amicable strategic corporate investors). With free classified listings

for real estate, cars, jobs, services, and other things, the site will

undoubtedly further erode classified revenue for daily newspapers.…

On HR and the Social Network Phenomenon

Ok so I'm a big fan of Ning, the company that powers this site as well as RecruitingBlogs.com. In as little as 5 minutes anyone can create their own social network. There's even a premium version which allows you to remove the ads and point to your own domain.

This got me thinking that employers can take advantage of this technology to… Continue

On being gainfuly employed, virtually...

Quote for the Day: Thursday, July 12th, 2007

"The last time I was in Second Life I found myself flying to the top of some kind of makeshift art warehouse, wondering why the sky was purple and where in the heck I could find my flying car. Who would have thought that I was merely a stones throw away from finding gainful…

On Web 1.0 and 2.0 and power sharing...

Quote for the Day: Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

I was in the pub the other evening, trying to explain the difference between Web 1.0 ["Dotcom"] vs Web 2.0 ["Blogs & Social Media"] to a web neophyte friend of mine.

The short answer: "Dotcom was about 'taking'. Web 2.0 is about 'giving'...Suddenly for the first time in history, the world's most powerful form of media is about giving, not taking. The implications are vast.

Giving vs. Taking.…

Why Recruiters Should Care About My New Job-Seeker Book

I was going to announce my new book ("The Job-Seeker's Guide to Resume Search Optimization and the Internet-Age Resume") here, but then I thought, "Dan, why does a bunch of recruiters care about your job-seeker book?!"

The good news is that I answered myself. Okay, maybe that's bad… Continue

Generation X - Sandwiched Between Baby Boomers and Gen Y and Forgotten

Somewhere out there another article or blog this week will address the Baby Boomers retiring or discuss how to manage Gen Y in today's ever changing workplace. Honestly, as a Gen X, I am tired of hearing about either generation

and for a moment would like to spotlight the "Sandwich Generation" -

Gen X. Back in May 2003 Time Magazine wrote an article focusing on "the

sandwich generation” referring to 30 and 40 something adults sandwiched between

caring for both young…

How to train a National Recruiting Organization about BLOGS when you have never used them

1. First you look at the time and realize you have 30 minutes to prepare. Because the person who was going to present got sick.

2. You search out a Blog and Join it

3. You get lucky and find one that is connected to LinkedIn which you are very familiar with

4. You create a profile and look through the profiles of about 20 other people

5. You take 3-5 deep breaths and speak confidently as if you have been putting up Blog posts for years.

Congrats To Ning

Ning just raised $44 Million. This seems like very good news unless you are a regular reader and commentor or Techcrunch and Gigaom. Since I am an uneducated individual when it comes to such things as valuations and bubbles, I am excited about it because I would think that now they can stay in business longer, hire… Continue

On political correctness and diversity training claptrap...

Quote for the Day, Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

"Do CEOs really believe the diversity claptrap or do they put on a happy face to avoid legal and other problems? Either way, they are acting in a manner contrary to the best interests of their companies, shareholders and the public at large."

HR Technology Productivity

Over 20 years ago I started my career as an Engineer in the newly emerging IT business, and yes, it was pre-IBM PC.

For many years I listened to reports telling me that the introduction of computers was not having any effect on staff productivity. Pah!, I thought, showing my age. If I was younger I would probably say, Meh!.

Back in the dark ages just before the dawn of the PC I…
