Is it ever OK to bad-mouth a colleague?

Be honest or keep quiet? Image via StreetFly JZ.

Criticising a colleague or ex-colleague during an interview has always been considered a massive no-no in the recruitment world. However, this year has seen the rule being broken numerous times on quite a public scale. From Greg Smith’s infamous resignation letter in the New York Times to the latest resignation letter to go viral in which the …

FedEx Day – What a great IDEA

So what is a FedEx day, and why would a recruitment company want to hold one? Dan Pink talks about it in great detail in his book ‘Drive: The Surprising Truth What Motivates Us', but to summarise, it is a 24 hour window to develop a new product. The deal is, you have to deliver overnight, hence a ‘FedEx’ day. When this is finished everyone meets up and votes on what they feel is the best product.

There is no input…

The Paralyzed Candidate- 10 Things you are missing

NOTE:  The following blog is not about physical paralysis, but rather the incapacity to act on a certain situation.

3 ways to stop other companies taking your candidate

Sometimes, the client experience can feel a bit like buying a house. I put forward a great candidate, they do a perfect interview and are offered the job. Client and candidate are happy. At least until someone else comes along with a better offer and lo and behold – that client has been ‘gazumped’ by the lure of a higher salary.

This happened to one of my clients recently, with the candidate turning down a role (despite already having accepted it) for the sake of a few thousand pounds…

The Diversity Scam: We Talk the talk but do we walk the walk

We have just recently undergone a decisive election era in which some very strong views have been expressed. Some of those comments made me take a moment and reflect on the status of diversity within this country and the workplace in particular.

One of the facts that became abundantly clear is that there is a dramatic change in the demographics of the society in which we live. Change is tough but when the majority suddenly finds itself in the minority it raises a wide range of…

Could using big data for recruiting hide your purple squirrels?

Last night, I attended Moneyball for Talent Acquisition, a great presentation by LinkedIn’s James Raybould on how to use data to drive your talent search. Raybould pointed out some of the ways in which LinkedIn can help you narrow down your candidate pool, identifying the supply of qualified candidates for a given position based on particular characteristics.
