The job market in the United States grew 4.1% in March as compared to February. The expansion in March did not meet our expectations. We expected a higher increase in labor demand for this time of year. The moderate growth may be a reflection of the significant developments in Japan and the Arab countries.

For any recruitment technology, there comes a point when they need to decide how they are going to expand and innovate their platform. Do they build in-house or do they look for partnerships with white label technology providers?
There are positives and negatives of both strategies, however, let’s take a look specifically at white label technologies and the value it provides to technology solutions. White Label technology providers create and innovate solutions that are…

I had dinner with a group of ex colleagues last night - one of those get togethers that happens once every 2 - 3 years and where you spend all evening catching up on what happened to so and so etc. Was great fun but, I was reminded of something that made me laugh regarding unusual interview questions and I thought I'd share it.
One of the guys who still works with this very well known american technology company said that he had got divorced just a year or so ago. He felt…

Ethics are a big deal in the corporate world. Companies want to be seen as ethical, therefore making them a top notch company to work for and trust in. Not only should a company be ethical, but so should their employees. Would you work for an unethical company just because you need a job? Some people would, but you need to figure out for yourself how important ethics are to you!
We have all seen the scandals on TV…

One of the first business lessons I learned many years ago was that it is often better to havemany smaller customers than fewer large ones. At the time, I was learning the ropes from a battle-hardened magazine publisher. He said (in reference to my naive comment that I would rather have Microsoft as an advertiser than a dozen smaller ones), “Where are you when your big customer decides to ‘shift focus’? Your loss will be 100% of income, rather than 15% or 20%. How long does…

Keeping people happy especially when it’s a group of people is a difficult task, combine that with all of the other uncontrollable factors in business and you’ve got yourself a challenge. In a recent article published by Kate Page, she defines results from a study asking employees and managers to rank 10 job characteristics, and then posted the top five (Page, 2011). They are as follows:
Employees seek:

I was invited to Soho to review the new Monster recruitment app that launched last week. Sadly, I was rather unwell and could not attend but my colleague, who works in recruitment software development, attended in my stead and perhaps this was a better person to review it anyway.
‘Although the venue, Bar Chocolate, had a slightly misleading name as there didn’t appear to be any chocolate, the promise of nibbles and free beer put me in a positive frame of mind.
I will start by…

A question I always ask at interviews is “Why do you want to leave your current job?” and then delve deeper to understand their ‘real’ motivation to leave. I’ve learnt not to be satisfied with standard responses such as ‘better opportunities’, ‘career prospects’, location, compensation, lifestyle choice………….whatever
So, the other day when this young 20 something answers, “For career stability and improving my work / life balance”, I probe further and realise it’s due to…

Sex offenders are not the most welcome employees with most employers. While some employers we talk to believe that sex offenders should be given a second chance and that consideration for a position should be based on their talents and not their sex offenders, others believe quite the opposite.
Certain employers believe sex offenders are toxic to the workplace environment. I tend to agree. Office morale is often diminished and there is often undue focus placed on the sex…

One of the many tips I give to executive level candidates going on job interviews is to have a customer visit mindset. When people think to themselves “I’m going on an INTERVIEW,” they become more humble, modest, respectful, etc. They speak when spoken to, and accept the one-down hierarchical aspect of the interview setting. This is highly counterproductive.
On the other hand, executives who visit customers are proactive, engaging, and on an equal footing with the…

“I think work and business can be creative and exciting, a hoot, a growth experience, a journey of lifelong learning and constant surprise. But, to be honest, I think such rewards will only be yours if you learn to approach your career and enterprise with the strategy I call…THE PURSUIT OF WOW!”
- Tom Peters, The Pursuit of WOW!

I'm consistently impressed with the folks on recruitingblogs. Specifically, the varying philosophies and methodologies that span this blog all pointing to one common goal; client satisfaction. With this in mind I have two questions:
1) What is the value that you, as an external recruiter offer your client - (what do they pay you for?)
2) Do your clients give a hoot where/how you source your candidates? Specifically, if they are impressed by your candidates but not…

Linkedin has rolled out a subtle but important change to the groups. When you go to the JOBS section of any group on Linkedin, you now only see Paid Linkedin Jobs, the free jobs are now in subtab (Career discussions). This would dramatically drop the views your Free job post get on Linkedin groups.
Not a surprising move by Linkedin to drive customers to pay for the job posting. If you started your group on Linkedin, now you have less control of it (they did not even notify the…

Scenario: Harry (name changed) ran a successful business before the downturn in the economy caught up with him. He was faced with a situation of a bunch of dues ranging from overblown credit card dues to home mortgage to car payments, etc.
Next, Harry started looking for a job. A graduate with multiple skills; all he needed was to combine his transferable skills and finding a job was a non issue – so he thought.
Then came the road block - his credit score stopped him from…

Whilst watching the England cricket and rugby teams YET AGAIN bouncing between top form and utter disaster, I was struck by an interesting theory. Generally speaking, in between bouts of sudden glory, the English sports teams tend to do one thing spectacularly well-let everybody down. We get all built up with feelings like ‘this is Henman’s year!’ ‘it’s England’s turn to win, we’ve got Rooney!’ and then boom. Rooney can’t be bothered and Henman goes out in the quarter finals AGAIN. We…

After combing through countless books, articles, and various online posts - the #1 reason for people leaving a company is their direct boss. Bosses have the ability to change, enhance or ruin a work environment. And they can do it quickly. So if bosses are the number one reason, why do we have so many poor ones? Training. Let me put it better, the lack of training. Bosses, leadership, or management - however you describe the people that oversee your day to day life; are the glowing…
