Wow, less than 4 weeks to go and the Bill Boorman phenomena takes on its latest iteration with TruLondon II and TruSource.
Inspired by RecruitFest in Toronto last year, Bill has grasped the Unconference model with both hands and taken it into places and worlds unknown. We have all gratefully jumped on board, giving us a chance to share… Continue
OK maybe I'm sucking up to Maren Hogan (Hi Maren) but I couldn't resist this after the Saturday I've just had.
We've been renovating at home over the last month or so. I am not handy with these things at all, so we employed a builder to look after things for us. Things started off with a flourish, things got uninstalled, frames got put up, man we were flying.
Things started to go awry though, when it… Continue
Well, I’m not sure how many of these sports analogy blogs I’ll be doing since my Packers lost to Arizona but there’s a good lesson here so I’ll take the opportunity while I can.
Like playoff fever, it’s natural for a candidate to be excited about a position as she’s going through the interview process and each round brings more and more excitement because naturally, the goals seems to be getting closer. And it really is a competition since one blown interview means “one and done” in… Continue

Due to the recent economic conditions Human Resource Managers are finding new ways to demonstrate the importance of their department to executives. We all know numbers are the best way to speak to senior management. Thus many organizations have now or are in the process of implementing new quantifiable metrics into their recruitment process.
I have been asked by some “what are some of the metrics we can use to measure our vendors?” I often tell them to take a step back and look at… Continue

The Lay of the Land
As humans, we're bound by a few things...gravity, taxes and time. When it comes to Time we're pretty much stuck moving forward and only talking about what's behind us or in front of us. Like you, I've learnt some simple sales tricks or methods to increase my chances of controlling my situation for the better. In this scenario, I'm going to talk about the use of Hot Dates. If this seems mundane to you, no problem, sometimes I find a little refresher doesn't hurt.… Continue

Within the workplace, there is still - I believe - one subject that creates very strong opinions and pre-conception discrimination when it comes to new colleagues and even worse prospective employees... and that is tattoos. Tattoos used to be considered taboo, connected to…
I am a mom of two kids: a 6-year-old daughter, and an 8-month-old son. When our son was born and while I was on maternity leave, my husband and I decided not to continue daycare due to budget, so he and I switch off - I work part-time in the morning, and he works 3-11 pm Monday through Friday. Therefore, I am usually with the kids each night, and I try to keep my daughter somewhat active after school, otherwise I have an overly energetic child driven up the walls. Keeping her active has also… Continue
The evolving US economy, cyclical change, and the worldwide distribution of wealth and business have caused what some experts are claiming to be an ever changing and fluid workforce. Stability and permanence are washed away to the low cost countries beating down our doors offering value and efficiency. But is that the case, or are we not noticing the widespread change that is taking place with our off-shoring efforts and what is likely to be a huge windfall (long long term) if the US can… Continue

We're great mates. We go back a year ago, and our friendship has blossomed as time has gone on.
I was listening to Bill Boorman and the crew from his Ready for Liftoff radio show, and they were talking about Twitter for learning. They were looking at… Continue

Among the most common topics candidates seek my advice is about resume preparation. Most often I am asked for feedback regarding content or construction yet some questions are quite specific such as whether it is appropriate to use bulleted text or how much employment history to include. In the legal profession it is not uncommon for law firm partners to have a summary bio prepared by the firm’s professional marketing staff. I have talked to very accomplished… Continue

I like nice legs. We are in the midst of a little rally in the recruiting business and I hope this one has the legs to keep going for a while. Job orders are flowing in at a little better pace. The interview process in most cases is moving along a little more quickly, and our pipeline of deals looks better than it has in a long time. So this feels pretty good and many people will be tempted to call it a recovery. Recession over.
I don’t think I can buy that scenario. In the post… Continue
My company, JCSI Corporate Staffing, just recently released the findings of a study we conducted with recruitment professionals on the tools they plan to use in 2010 to support their company's hiring needs. The results indicate that hiring is increasing, but there is a shift in the best practices companies are using to find and attract candidates. Traditional methods of… Continue

I have received a lot of feedback on my post about recruiting mistakes personally and on Recruitingblogs .com. so why not continue the thought!
Reputation is HUGE, especially now with social networking and immediate feedback. People talk, especially when they feel like they have been treated unfairly.
Your reputation is a consideration at every level of your business. Here are some areas you may not have thought of:
How you advertise your positions. Are you targeting… Continue

I am on a plane right now and got an urge to write something that I find very important not only in recruitment but in how people evaluate and judge applicants and people in general. I use the analogy of President Obama simply because we are in a time of in your face smear campaigns and news, where our political opinion of a person is summed up and essentially defined by one act or… Continue

Everyday I learn of a new recruitment agency forming, and every day I hear about how there aren’t enough jobs for recruiters to work. I read an interesting article recently written by an internal recruitment manager, frustrated at the state of the market, and the time she had spent sifting through a combination of both irrelevant, and the all too common unsolicited CV’s for a position she was trying to fill. As an ex-recruiter, I know only too well that common phrase when you finally reach the… Continue

and the world around you has turned upside down, what do you do? When all of your job search efforts, interviews, breakfast meetings and resume re-writes lead you to the same place, nowhere, who do you turn to for help? When it's no longer enough to keep going, sometimes you reach for a little divine inspiration, sometimes you want to give up. You know when you've reached the end of the road, this is the time to pick up where you left off and start all over again. The old way of doing things,… Continue

Remember that old Neil Sedaka song, "Breaking up is hard to do?" Well here in New Zealand, "Laying Off Is Hard To Do". The laws surrounding hiring/firing/laying off workers are such that in order to comply, companies must go through a number of steps that are similar to union requirements in the United States. I won't get into boring specifics, but in my own particular situation - the entire New Zealand office of a particular company was being closed. In order to be in proper legal compliance,… Continue

By now everyone has heard about the rollercoaster changes to NBC’s Late night lineup and the flack they are getting. I think that companies, HR and employees can learn a little something from this situation. We all have been faced with decisions that leadership makes. There are times we agree and other times where we disagree wholeheartedly. Sometimes the disagreements are a little more hush, hush then we would like them to be. In… Continue
Every morning I stop on my way to the station to get a coffee…my Soya Latte is very much a part of my commute, even in summer! I have stopped for a couple of years at one particular coffee shop (Cafe Nero, for those in the UK) initially for their loyalty scheme which basically gives you every tenth coffee free – a free coffee every other Friday seemed like a good idea!
I say initially because they started charging extra for soya milk. Other coffee shops didn’t, but I stayed loyal.… Continue
