Internet users are leveraging social media for a wide variety of purposes. From complaining about being bumped off a Southwest flight to providing real-time natural disaster reporting, the social web is increasingly changing the way we communicate with each other online. This shift has important implications for the way companies and candidates will connect during job recruiting.
Over the next several years, I believe the social web will become increasingly useful for companies and… Continue

First of all - I'm not a recruiter but work at BlueSky - a PR consultancy that specialises in PR for the recruitment sector, so it's a subject we're pretty involved with. And at the moment we're recruiting ourselves. This is where we are put in our clients’ shoes and have to put all that recruiting knowledge we have gained to the test! I’ve written various pieces on how to write a good CV and the likes over the last couple of years, but I guess I have always assumed that people know the basics.… Continue

If you are engaged in a job search, it is important to ensure you are taking advantage of every search resource at your disposal. For example, I recently received an email update from my local chapter of the…
We all know that technology has made it very easy to advertise and receive applications. My belief is that it has made it too easy. Anyone can and will apply for every job that you post regardless of education/experience required and salary.
It is exciting to see the “number” of new applicants to your job post and that excitement soon turns to frustration when you realize that most if not all of them are not nearly qualified and/or live across a national border. I get it, but now is… Continue
The question of how many pages a CV or resume should be? arises frequently, so I’ve had a google around at advice on length of CV on the web and found that opinions differ. In order to try to provide you with some sensible advice I thought I’d ask the very people who should know how long a CV should be, whose opinions really matter, and those who will be making a judgement on you based on your Curriculum Vitae – the end employers and Human Resource managers. So in order to write this article… Continue
This came up on my ipod this week and from the week I've had, I really related. (plus it put me in a great mood to get me going for the day!) Putting it bluntly I've had to play the role of bastard a lot this week.
As per an earlier post, I had to tell a couple of people they were dreaming in their expectations. I had to tell some contractors they weren't going to be renewed, I got a bit narky with some vendors and put some really tough deliverables on some… Continue

Beware the dreaded follow up letter from the candidate thanking you, or worse, thanking your client for interviewing him/her. In all cases there is little/nothing to gain and everything to lose. In almost all cases the candidate makes an error – spelling, grammatical, or factual; and the error is picked up by the reader and it’s game over. Today I received such a letter in the form of an email. “Steve, thanks for the interview….. Please tell Mr Smith that I will be available to speak with… Continue

I’ve been amazed of late as to the how people engage and interact with others on Linked In. I’m thinking in this instance specifically of the prolifigate of requests to contact, answer questions and for testimonials etc and how people make these requests.
With this in mind, I thought I’d share my top three tips for how you can use Linked In more effectively:
New Contact Requests – When you make a request to be a contact with me, I expect you to be known to me. If… Continue
West Central Florida Healthcare Recruiters Association held a recent meeting during which Mike Malfitano of the firm Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP gave a comprehensive overview on the Family Medical Leave Act, the Genetic Information Discrimination Act and the American with Disabilities Act.
I've come to the conclusion that most of life is just like dating--the job search, climbing the corporate ladder, or working as a consultant. Generally speaking in life everyone is out to make a connection, a sale, more money, or their soul mate. The law of attraction is widely accepted and thought of in a romantic context. And since most business relationships require a form of emotion, attraction,…
Unless you've been living under a rock lately you've probably heard talk of green/cleantech energy as the linchpin of the 21st century economy.
Over the past year and a half I have started a number of green job boards to take advantage of this trend. After seeing first hand, the number and types of jobs being created I am convinced more than ever of this industry's potential. I've also…
Before I got into recruitment I spent a period of time developing and implementing technology solutions for the recruitment industry. For years ‘the database’ has been a key competitive edge, the USP for many recruitment businesses, especially those that operate in a niche. They guarded it fiercely and bragged about it in equal measure.
If you ever start thinking that you are bigger than your people – stop! You’re not. I have written about companies who say “their people are their biggest asset” and then proceed to talk about the bottom line and guest complaints with no mention of their people (remember that oh so valuable asset we just talked about?). I have been in way too many of those meetings.
You can’t manage what is inherently within someone. Yes people who are passionate about what they do and “live”… Continue
The cliché “Hiring the right person for the right job” continues to be loosely used by the HR industry. In order for HR to recruit “mister/miss right”, HR would need to put emphasis of conducting a job analysis, which will help HR in understanding the current and future situations that impact the position. Unfortunately, this seldom happens.
Once HR understands the situations that surround a position, they will be able to reduce the risk…
At the gym I go to there's a particularly dedicated young man who is a
competitive basketball player. How do I know this? I know this because
I observed this guy strapping on some extremely ungainly shoes and
jumping up and down off of a static wooden box for 30 minute stretches.
These shoes are extraordinary - they give you a 6" lift on the ball of
your foot but no heel equivalent, so you can't stand back. The result
is that you are strengthening your calf muscles… Continue

Social media is a conversation; it’s a number of platforms, a set of tools that enables conversation, engagement, transferal of thoughts, ideas and information……
We all know them, have seen them, snickered at them when they aren't looking. Hey, I'm sure we've all been that person.
I had to sit in a review the other day and tell a guy that basically he wasn't as good as he thought he was. I didn't enjoy being the teller, and I'm sure he didn't enjoy being the hearer. But it's part of the gig.
I sat down Saturday night and looked at the job I had ahead of myself. We are doing renovations at home (I know... long drawn out story,… Continue
I am entering my 17th year in recruiting and it still amazes me to hear how corporate recruiters will not utilize the sources that are most readily available to them but only focus on new or trendy sources. In addition, over the years I have read articles about best sources, and how if I didn't use a certain source before…
Earlier this morning, I stumbled upon an extremely interesting overview of a "Mathematics Event" presentation offered at the 2010 AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science).…
