Rudyard Kipling's "If" - Thought I'd Pass On As A Reflection of a Headhunter's Life

A friend of mine passed this on the other day, and although I don't have much use for poets personally, this isn't bad. It reminds me of the life a true Headhunter (an entrepreneurial one) lives as you walk in many different circles:

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you

But make allowance for their doubting too,

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or… Continue

The Truth about Interview Travel Expenses

The force of globalization and increased movement of workers, coupled with the general lowering of travel costs would indicate a willingness of companies to incur in travel expenses to invite a candidate for an interview, when they are unable to fill a position locally and out-of-state or foreign applicants have the required skills, such as experience in a specific industry or company.

However, reality is different.

Most often than not, companies remain silent on the issue… Continue

Free Webinar: How to Use Facebook for Recruiting

Facebook and MySpace are two of the most popular sites amongst U.S. college students and recent graduates and dwarf the traffic from any job board, including sites such as Monster, Careerbuilder, and HotJobs. Yet very few employers are using the social networking sites for recruiting and very few of those are using them well.

I regularly speak at recruiting conferences and am quoted by national print and… Continue

Candidates Want to Know

It´s time we face it.

Candidates do not like to apply to postitions when companies advertise vacancies in a vacuum.

Often, companies do not state the name of the company or the salary range for the vacancies they advertise. Insted, they use words such as "Multinational Telecom Company", or "Magic Circle Law Firm" and are silent or vague when it comes to salary. This is often rooted in that companies, or their human resources consultants, want to attract the best candidates… Continue

Tech: A girl´s Best Friend

Women have been struggling for decades to achieve equal status to men when it comes to the workplace. The statistics are way too familiar. In the US, for full-time, year-round workers, women earn around 33% less than men for the same job. For women of color, the gap is even wider.

Women are also more likely to work in more precarious forms of employment with low earnings, little financial security and few or no social benefits. This results in that women also tend to own fewer… Continue

The Future of Jobster.com

Ask a job seeker where he or she would start their online job search. Jobster certainly wouldn’t be at the top of their list, since it primarily branded itself within the HR and Recruiting community. I quickly started 3 job searches on Google using a keyword and location, and a Jobster result did appear on the first page of results in 2 of the 3 searches. In all 3 results I clicked on the first job in the site. All 3 were aggregated from other sites, and 2 of the 3 came up with “Sorry, this job… Continue

Warning Signs to Look for When Interviewing A Candidate

So they look great on paper, but do you really know what’s going to come walking through your door? Pay attention to these warning signs when interviewing your next candidate:

Interview Warning Sign #1: Appearance

This is an easy one. If they arrive at the interview in a gym suit, overalls, mini skirt, etc., you may want to rethink your candidate choice. If they can’t put any effort into their interview attire what makes you think they are going to put any effort into… Continue

LInkedIn - Are you kidding me???

OK. So I'm done complaining about Linked In. General concensus indicates I'm simply missing the boat on this. So I've decided to do something about my meager 42 contacts. Today!

Sign on. Great. I see some of my contacts are as promiscuos as ever! Nothing new there. Also it was nice to be reminded of a contact at a client I've just heard is hiring. Maybe I'll give her a call. (If that's still cool.)

Back to adding new contacts. Let's see. Oh boy - Linked In has offered to… Continue

You're Getting Noticed - Like it or Not...

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility I’ve heard it said that branding is all about getting yourself noticed. I’d tend to disagree – at least I’d tend to disagree today. It’s my opinion that personal branding only begins with getting noticed. If done right, personal branding efforts (for employment) should continue down a path that leads potential employers to see you as the only viable option they have for a job they’re looking to fill (or to create!)

But first let’s have a quick chat about getting… Continue

In Defence of Salesmen, Part 2

(Audio version here)

Last week, I criticized a young, corporate recruiter for slandering salesmen on his blog. Well, he got in touch with me because he didn't like hearing me say his philosophy is well suited to cult members and cream puffs but not strong women and real men.

And you know what that means? That even after listening this little punk still didn't get it. So I'm going to have to teach him another lesson, today.… Continue

Discuss: online employee referral program (ERP)?

Hi I just think about online ERP here:

Nowadays, employee referral program (ERP) is proven to be the most effective and efficient way to hire new. According to “Recruitment Advertising: Moving in New Directions” by Classified Intelligence, ERP is 20% more effective than job board like Monster, CareerBuilder and Dice. Many HR sources claim that rewarding employees actually costs less than recruiting and often attracts better workers.

With so much advantage, more and more… Continue

Finding the perfect terms

How to Think Like Your Prospect?

As we consider the candidate mindset, we realize that they're busy achieving their success as a result a large number of candidates are just bored, tired or not interested in looking for “opportunities”. We need to recognize that candidates are chasing a career, not jobs.

When people write their profiles, bios, or resumes, they reflect their personality and skills as they represent their career goals creating an image. They are building a… Continue
