Lance Haun guests writes a post on the Standout Jobs blog with 5 top mistakes that companies make when hiring in a recession. These include:
1. Thinking great candidates grow on trees.
2. Under-estimating your staffing needs.
3. Hiring now, only to layoff quickly thereafter.
4. Under-compensating employees because you can.
5. Not replacing necessary employees.

Naturally everyone with a truly international business feels the economic downturn but there are some key areas we have that have simply not seen any kind of reduction. We have a large number of oil and gas vacancies for example in places you might at first not think of in this sector e.g. Spain and Greece. We have more IT/Telco and engineering job orders than previously in Kuwait, Oman, and UAE. Our LATAM job and India orders are up. If anyone wants more info or opportunities contact me here…

There is lots of news these days of people being fired. It's not good. In fact, it's really not good at all but there is nothing more liberating as a third party recruiter when you get to fire a client. goes something like this.
Recruiter: I can't work with you under these conditions. You don't give feedback, you make terrible offers and I'm firing you.
Client: what do you mean you are firing us, I pay…

Okay, so to continue the story!
First I want to say I have received many messages from many of you and I want to say thank you! I didn't realize this was going to get such a great response. So let me tell you about what happened the first 2 days.
So the day of the news, obviously letting the Mrs. know was a treat. Tears,…

There is no shortage of reports available in applicant tracking systems (ATS) to help you with your everyday tasks. They allow you to quickly find candidates, set timeframes and plan for future efforts. However, the reporting capabilities are also a powerful tool to prove your performance.
For this weeks tip, try developing a report or a list of reports which highlight your performance over the past few quarters or years. Assuming you have a positive performance report, these can be…

December 10th, 3:35 pm (early and convenient timing - I would point out)
As you know, if you have read or listened to me much, I am a strong advocate of telling people what you need or how they can help. I know that if I understand what I can do for you (and it is within reason), I am going to do my best to try to help. I introduce people all the time (no, not just candidates and clients), I write articles for others, give helpful (I hope) critique to others about whatever they ask me to…

No longer are sites like MySpace and Facebook just for college students posting their inappropriate pictures from the previous weekend, these sites now appeal to a different demographic—recruiters and employers looking to learn more about candidates they’re considering for employment.
As the amount of personal information available online to potential employers increases every second, candidates these days are making first impressions on employers long before they even show up for…

I guess this is more of a question that I hope to get responses to...rather than a blog post.
I'm looking to compile various reasons a hiring manager or company would prefer to hire a contractor vs. a permanent employee.
Reasons OTHER than budgets and money. I understand the financial benefits...but lets talk about the OTHER reasons out there that managers hire contract resources for long-term positions.

You're a decent person, and you care about others. So how do you deal with the growing number of job-seekers who show up at your door?
With kindness and grace, I hope. You may not be able to find everyone a position—which is true even in the best of times—but at the very least, you can show them respect and offer some professional guidance.
I remember my first recession as a recruiter, and the impression it made. The same candidates who wouldn't take my calls a year…

Today teasing has been all but banished from the lives of many children. In recent years, high-profile school shootings and teenage suicides have inspired a wave of “zero tolerance” movements in our schools. Accused teasers are now made to utter their teases in front of the class, under the stern eye of teachers. Children are given detention for sarcastic comments on the…

From
Our Time To Act:
I may be a bit odd. It is actually quite likely. But one thing that has always seemed strange to me is our level of deference to “experts.” I understand that experts become known as such for a reason and I appreciate the value of advanced educations, years of experience and unique insight. While certainly valuable, I believe that the significance of expertise is greatly over-rated. Experts still make…

In this economy. Does it make sense for a recruiter to consider --Transferable skills????
It is part of my role to influence hiring managers to think out of the box. Many times, that means educating those hiring managers how to read a resume, what questions help uncover hidden talents, and Identifying potential vs. experience in an applicant. This prompted me to inquire to all of you----Are hard skills really transferable? I know that we all need leaders, and that is a skill that is…
