Digging Into RecruitingBlogs.com v1.10

Happy Interdependence Day

A community is forming in this little outpost called RecruitingBlogs.com. Somehow, the space is overcoming its very name. Imagine trying to sell houses in a town called "Ya Gotta Be A Writer To Live Here".

While the moniker implies one kind of involvement, the reality is quite different. RecruitingBlogs.com (RBC) is a place for experimentation. Its inhabitants are trying new things every day.

The first experiment is the one Dave Mendoza calls…

Fellow Recruiters: Avoid the Twitter Trap

Twitter and Micro-blogging is all the hype today in the social networking (particularly the Recruiting/Talent Acquisition community). Why? Well, it's cool . . . it's new . . . it's widely publicized . . . it's a way of staying in touch . . . from a marketer's viewpoint, it's a way to maintain mindshare and/or top-of-mind placement. The notion of a multi-drip is indeed being redefined by Web 2.0.

There's only one problem - I don't see… Continue

Being Valued at Work

Feeling valued? What does that mean to you? To me, it means that my opinions are respected and my judgment is trusted for its worth. It is well known that the best teams or the best companies to work for in any corner of the world are most productive and creative when its team members are valued for who they are and what they believe in. That should be of no surprise to any of us. However, some companies do not seem to recognize and strive to develop a culture that embodies trust and… Continue

What's Your "Style"

If I were to go back and make a list of ex-boyfriends (we’re talking way back here), there would be a few common threads. Some may say it was their penchant for marijuana. Others might note the lack of many personal items like, say, a car or any furniture other than a mattress on the floor. Those things are hard to come by when you don’t have a job.

I’d characterize the trend more towards the, say, passionate and creative type. I had a job in my 20s. I didn’t need a boy to buy me… Continue

Social Networking - Socially...

Who among us doesn't remember back in the day when social networking was really about heading out and shaking hands and meeting people - not just online communities and emails? Don't get me wrong - I'm insanely passionate about social network sites such as RBC and the like - but I do miss heading out to the clubhouse for 4 solid hours of 'working' with a client/candidate on the fairways.

That's… Continue

Soa, WEB 2.0 and deployment of various protocols, Mashups will change how Recruiters do business.

Titles - Meaningful or a Crack at Creative Writing?

When asking what someone does, what people are often trying to assess is the deeper question of: who are you? (to be a little more cynical: are you worth speaking to?)

And it is much easier to come up with a quick, catchy phrase that sums the total of your professional self then it is to provide a true account of what you "do." It is the way we communicate to others our significance and importance.

This used to be pretty simple, you would start working for a company and… Continue

Where do the best candidates hide online?

Over the last two years and a half, we have been answering very question. With close to 100,000,000 banner, email and text impressions we have a good idea.

First, a little background.

In 1999, I became the first person to market student loans online at financialaid.com. We ended up becoming the largest provider of student loans online, transacting more than 1 Billion dollars of business each year. We found websites that attracted students and recent graduates and then… Continue

Seeking Qualified Candidates - No Rockstars Please

I can't imagine anyone has not noticed the push to describe top candidates as rockstars lately: "Rockstar DBA wanted", "Only Rockstars need apply", etc. And for the most part I understand this to be kitschy and a way to market your req, but in the end, do the companies we work for/with really need/want rockstars?

Managers Behaving Badly

Another Industry Radar article that tickled my reality bone, Managers Behaving Badly: Five Killer Results. How do these relate to hiring managers? Hmm...let's see:

Cargo Cult Management

Everybody Wants a (Rising) Star

In this business, we get to see our share of resumes, and with that as my perspective, let me offer some additional advice on crafting your resume.

Keeping in mind that two of the constants in the hiring process are that most companies want stars, and that a large portion of companies are unwilling to pay for them. So what do they end up hiring most of the time? A rising star, or something relatively close! So how do you convey this in a resume?

Two words: Career… Continue
