Are there such things as permanent footprints?

There's no doubt there's been plenty written on being careful when it comes to what you publish about yourself online. But when it comes to your career - you can't careful enough. Certain things that seem fun or kitchy now, might come back to bite you sooner or later. These "perma-prints" could follow you for years, maybe even the rest of your career.

Case in point, a few years ago, we had an intern working for the company from a very prestigious school's masters program. Because of… Continue

If you're in the Central Texas area and you're a technology dude or dudette, you probably already know about door64 (http://door64.com/). door64 is run by Matt Genovese (thanks Matt!!) who is a Functional Verification Engineer at Freescale Semiconductor...

What's in a name? How we screwed up naming in Newton once and why we won't ever again.

Be really (really) careful how you name things. And, NEVER use the same word to describe two different things.

Sloppy naming can lead to minor frustrations, or it can lead to some really big problems for your users. The road to sloppy naming is paved by the careless use of synonyms or by naming two different things with the same word or phrase.

First of all, let’s look at synonyms (the more obvious of the two naming blunders). When considering a naming framework for… Continue

Is Twitter a "Triumph of Humanity"?

In this article from the Business Profiles section of apple.com, Twitter is touted as a progressive, conscientious company and employer. But, as you can imagine, Apple does quite a bit of tooting its own horn. It rings a little hollow to call Twitter a “triumph of humanity” when the latter half of the article is a Mac love-fest. In the entire article, the name “Twitter” is mentioned 32 times (yes, I counted). On the other hand, “Mac”… Continue

The Client Side - Sponsorship - A Client's Perspective

Sponsorship used to be a pain to deal with. It's much worse now. In my opinion it is almost always not worth dealing with. I have people try to make the case all the time that with NAFTA, a TN Visa is no problem, but not clients. A great client took the time this week to lay out the sponsorship situation from a Canadian company taking someone from the US or another country and I thought this would be well worth sharing.

"There are 2 steps and the first is rather lengthy. A company… Continue

You have no idea how to really interview candidates

Kris Dunn wants to waterboard candidates and as a mutual fan of 24, I say it's high time we Jack Bauer potential employees (you'll notice my Jack Bauer facts on the right side of my RBC page).

I just don't call it asking for negative information as Kris puts it; what he's referring to is… Continue

Simple steps for GREAT cover letters

There are two simple steps for great cover letters:

1. Always include the cover letter in the body of the email you are sending. If the recruiter has to click to open a separate document in order to read your cover letter, chances are that they won’t bother.

2. Target each cover letter to the specific position for which you are applying. Generic cover letters that tell how great YOU are and what YOU want to do without… Continue

Welcome to the Recruitment Content War

Recruitment Content War On #talentnet they raised the issue that since everything on Twitter is public, there's no way for a recruiter to gain any sort of competitive advantage.

Take LinkedIn or a job board, for example. On LinkedIn, you pay to get access to everyone's profiles, otherwise your network is limited to who you know. On a job board, you pay extra to get your job posting at the top of the search results, or… Continue

Recruiting Whore

I was talking with a recruiter friend of mine that I often do splits with. We were of course talking about the tough times we are going through right now. We then got into "It is so bad, I have resorted to...." and we were on the phone laughing until tears were rolling down my face. Misery does love company.

I was telling the story of how I had taken this very poor paying recruiting job in a foreign country, just to keep busy, and to see if I could recruit in a foreign country from… Continue

2009 Applicant Tracking System Vendor List

Starting over a year ago, I began keeping track of all of the different ATS systems available. Now the list has grown to almost 140 different vendors. Yikes! I thought it might be nice to make this list available to folks, so I helped a group of friends build a little site with the list. For anyone interest, I would welcome any feedback before I send it to everyone. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a sneak peek.

Best of luck!!!

Possible New Candidate Feature for Applicant Tracking Systems

Anyone reviewing applicant tracking systems (ATS) knows there are plenty of features and functions designed to deliver the core benefits of reducing costs, increasing efficiency and placing quality candidates. The other side of the ATS that sometimes takes the backseat during considerations revolves around the benefits for the candidates. The following is a shortlist of some of these features:

Social Media - Friend or Foe of the Job Seeker?

The buzz around using social media to find a job or find a candidate is starting to become very loud. Frankly, if you are a recruiter and you haven’t started using social media sites like LinkedIn, FaceBook and Twitter to find and stay in touch with prospective candidates, you are already behind. Remember the Internet moves at the speed of the Internet and that’s pretty fast. Things that seem important and relevant one day can be passe’ the next. Take blogging for instance, at one point there… Continue

Performance reviews; Do they perform?

Performance review time in any company is detested by most managers and employees. Most companies continue to follow the same old process of reviewing every candidate just once a year and make changes to compensation based on the outcome of the review. How can a manager expected to remember all the events from the first day of the year to the last? Is it right to expect a manager to record every significant event with the employee during the year? Should we expect the employee to accept… Continue
