Keeping up with the Kardashians during the job hunt

Keeping up with the Kardashians

He completely lost me at “sir”.

It was his first chance to make a lasting impression and he totally blew it.

Clearly stated in the job description was “accurate, detail oriented, excellent communicator…” and “please contact Heather Gardner direct for immediate consideration."

Had he taken the time to look me up, he would have known…. Oh "Bing" or "Google" me please!

It’s so easy to lose out on an… Continue

Love Your Employees or Watch Them Leave

In 2009, we witnessed a year of mass layoffs. In 2010, be prepared for another wave. Yet, this wave will be different. This wave will be voluntary . . . a mass exodus of employees who have lost faith in their employer.

A recent survey of American workers conducted by Harris Interactive revealed:

* 77% are not satisfied with the strategy and vision of the company and its leadership.

* 48% of workers are not satisfied with the relationship they have with their… Continue

When will Applicant Tracking Software Get the Message?

"We were not able to identify your contact e-mail address. Your login e-mail address will be used as your contact e-mail address instead. Please be aware that this contact e-mail address will be used to contact you."

The message above was sent to a prospective candidate from an applicant tracking system -not ours. This system is managing a fortune 500 company’s careers site. Yikes! It can hardly be debated that… Continue

The Big Recruitment Debate???

I spent time this morning reading a blog on a British based site leadingemployersblog.com. It was titled "The Big Recruitment Debate". It was a debate with only one view being represented, which does not make a debate.

The poster named “Admin” asked the question;

‘Is it time to review the way that recruitment works?

- if a business was really committed to recruiting the absolute best, the absolute most suitable would they really put their recruitment in the hands of a third… Continue

Season For Good Health

Prevention remains the most effective way to stay healthy. The H1N1 flu (swine) is still occurring throughout the United States and it is likely we will continue to see more cases during the upcoming flu season in the fall and winter. It is important to take actions to prevent illness and t to make plans in the event that you or your loved ones become ill.

It is not known how severe this disease may become. As I write to you, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently… Continue

What would Batman do?

Gotham City just had a major layoff. Batman is now unemployed and actively looking for his next gig. Superman and Spiderman got their pink slip a week earlier.

Because Batman is an “out of the box” thinker he knows that he needs to try something different in order to find employment during these extraordinary times.

Want to see a grown man cry??? Take away his iPhone.

September 30th I attended MoMo Boston held at the Boston Harbor Hotel where there was the usual meet and greet of some of the finest minds in America but also a great panel discussion regarding mobile advertising, mobile platforms, the best types of phones, etc. Needless to say, out of a room of 200, there were probably 11 women. Oh well – it meant more white wine for me. And NO! I do not JUST go for the open bar – Jeez.

My reason for attending was compounded by the fact that one of… Continue

The dangers (and benefits) of backfilling job listings

Once upon a time, if you visited a job board, you knew what you would get: whatever jobs the board had on that day. These were jobs that the board’s sales force had convinced employers to post, on that job board. If you clicked on a job, you went straight to that job posting. And if you applied for it, you did so through that particular job board.

Well, those days are long gone. Since the advent of job board aggregators such as Indeed and Simply Hired, it’s become so easy for a job… Continue

You may know of someone who despite the economic climate this year has still done remarkably well in their recruitment career. The Hidden Profit Available Inside Your Recruitment Company

I wasn't at the major Australian recruitment industry conference last month in Queensland (RCSA Conference), but from all accounts it was an excellent conference. I did follow the articles and blogs being posted from the conference and one in particular caught my eye.

It was Top consultants bill five times more: Study.

More Than Just An Education

Here’s what I told the guy in the interview, “Over a 4 and a half year period I reported to no less than 36 different managers. Most often my obligations were split between 4 managers at a time and each of them had completely different objectives for me to meet at regular intervals. At any given time they’d have me working on either support documentation or reviewing past work product while assimilating new information that would be relevant to my performance reviews about every 6 weeks or so.… Continue

TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE? Photo-inclusive resumes are the question

This woman’s eyes were so scary, they made me shudder. Her toothy rectangle of a smile was frozen under a clearly cosmetically enhanced nose which formed the T-square support for a pair of repulsively bulbous orbs. I think she must have been a---

Balancing Practicality with Passion

I had an interesting conversation today with one of my clients. Over the last seven years I have been witness to Marks' setbacks and successes, his layoffs and his promotions. I've met his wife, his kids, and he has met my sons. Our relationship is truly of "trusted advisor" nature.

This past Friday he was laid off from a software firm that had difficulty securing an additional line of credit. At best, the firm has another 6-8 weeks before they… Continue
