Effective Networking in your Underwear

new do self port 019

It sounds like everyone’s worse nightmare…. You go to the office and suddenly realize you’re just wearing underpants, or worse nothing at all. I think we’ve all had that dream, am I right?

BUT, in reality it doesn’t really matter how you’re dressed to affectively present yourself in the BEST positive light. From the comfort of your home (wearing whatever), simply get involved and BRAND yourself as the expert that you WANT to be.

Here’s how I roll in my… Continue

BYOBM - If you've got it, flaunt it!

Spring has sprung! Birds are chirping, pedestrians are darting out in front of my car, I narrowly avoid running into people on bikes – seriously some of you people are slightly dangerous. Ahhhhh…. Summer is on its way. And to top it off I’m seeing signs of an upswing in the market. WOO HOO!!

Recently, I was fortunate enough to take part in a few events focusing on job hunting, technology, new products, etc. at the Microsoft building in Cambridge, MA. Can we talk about how… Continue

The marketing tightrope

Marketing a job board is akin to walking a tightrope with two contentious children hanging from either end of your balancing rod. On one side you have your employers, wanting more exposure, better candidates, and yes, their logo in a prominent location. On the other side you have your job seekers, wanting some sort of response from employers, a really great (or at least well-paying) job, and lots of stuff for free.

The challenge? Too many job seekers and you’re most likely spending… Continue

Has the Cellar been reached???

The Employment Guide, job fair employers, and job-seekers at Citifield have given us reason to believe that the sky is the limit once again for this great nation’s economy and job market. On Thursday, May 14th 2009, at 8am people weren’t lined up outside of the Mets new stomping ground to catch an early game. No, the line was full of Job-Seekers galore looking to hopefully help in the lowering of the tremendous 8.1% unemployment rate (www.labor.state.ny.us/) in New York. Upstairs waiting in the… Continue

The F in Recruiter

When you think of the common traits of a recruiter, you typically think about many; driven, motivated, gregarious, talkative, hard working....the list can go on. This list will be full of strong adjectives and can become quite the long list.

I have boiled the traits of a recruiter down into two: Fight or Flight.

A fighter is in it to win, takes the punches, takes his/her bumps, rides the coaster up and down. When pushed/backed into the corner, this person will come out… Continue

Finding a new job with web 2.0

A lot of buzz has been generated around the term, "web 2.0" lately. Over the past year or two, the term was coined to define the evolving nature of how we interact with each other through the internet. With the advent of blogging, social networks, and other interactive features, we can easily connect with people all over the world. When is the last time you looked in the newspaper for a job? Probably not recently. In fact, web 2.0 strategies are spilling over into the job hunting and recruiting… Continue

Market Bouncing Back, Complete Recovery in Sight!!!

You are reading further than the initial headline for a reason. You want to believe. You want a little taste of something that has been sadly absent from business in America of late, positivity. Yesterday, I had a person tell me that he thinks that the United States may never recover, that we may never get back to where we were. The timbre of business conversations harkens back to the “Dot Bomb” fiasco several years ago, only magnified. The damage to the American psyche intensifies every day we… Continue

I really didn't want that job anyway!

Let’s just cut to the chase - interviewing and looking for a job can be extremely tough. If you have approached your job search in a professional manner you have already:

- researched and learned all you can about the company, interview team and hiring manager.

- properly formatted your resume and made sure it presents you in the best light for the position you are interviewing for.

- bought a spiffy new suit and even got your car cleaned (see previous post - Stop… Continue

I have a puzzling Love/Hate relationship with Twitter....please help!

Let me start by saying I'm a Twitter fan, and think we've only begun to scratch the surface of it's potential.

That said, as my Twitter base grows and I politely try to follow back the majority of people that for some reason have decided to follow me, I've run into a frustrating situation.

I'm following close to 1000 people and it's beginning to feel very disconnected, like we're all talking at each other.

This is no doubt mostly my fault as I don't spend a ton… Continue

Involuntary P/T workforce - a leading indicator

Involuntary part-time workers account for "...almost one in three of all part-time workers. Almost all the new involuntary part-time workers were formerly full-time workers accepting cutbacks in hours. Part-time employment invariably rises during recessions, but...the magnitude of the rise in this recession has been unprecedented since records were first kept in the 1950s. It also suggests that the jobs numbers and unemployment rate underestimate the extent to which employers have cut costs… Continue

Question to self.... are you a fraud?

It's been an interesting day. A busy busy day, which started in a flurried search for a phone hiding in my car and ending with me questioning my very worth... as I said... interesting day.

The flurry of the morning was compounded by an innocuous little quote in the book I'm reading. Now I won't quote it directly as it is fiction, and I cannot be bothered… Continue

Advertise your jobs if you want to find the best hidden skills.

During the current financial crisis many companies are being forced to retrench staff; and it’s in times like these that quality employees are holding onto their jobs. Generally these are the candidates that are making a valuable contribution to their current employer and are less likely to be considered for retrenchment. But these are exactly the types of skills that recruiters will need to hunt down if they want to ensure that they are hiring the best.

Occupying Iraq: A History of the Coalition Provisional Authority

Here is a great report on the CPA... very interesting!

Source: RAND Corporation

The American engagement in Iraq has been looked at from many perspectives — the flawed intelligence that provided the war’s rationale, the failed effort to secure an international mandate, the rapid success of the invasion, and the long ensuing counterinsurgency campaign. This book focuses on the activities of the Coalition Provisional Authority and its administrator, L. Paul Bremer, who governed… Continue
