I'll never forget the moment I saw 9,000 as the number of applicants to one position I was working on. I was an internal consultant to a Fortune 500 company and the shock I got from registering the number 9,000 was dumbfounding. How the heck was I supposed to feel that 9,000 people had a fair shot at the position? And how could I possibly feel confident that I had presented only the absolute best qualified candidates? I sat back and tried to breathe through this sudden crisis of the mind and… Continue
So often, I have people that are looking for a new job, network with me but they can’t tell me what kind of position they are seeking. Sometimes they only know they don’t want to do the same thing as their previous position, or they don’t want to ‘limit’ their options, or they just don’t know what’s available. They tell me they are “open right now”.
I can’t help you if you can’t tell me what it is you want!
That may sound obvious, but to a great many job seekers it’s the… Continue

In the past I have pondered the phenomena of entitlement associated with Gen Y and Millenials. Well, hold the phone...I think the past 10 months has given all of us - Gen X'ers and Y'ers and beyond - a little dose of reality. 2009, so far, has shown us economic turmoil that most of us have never experienced in our lifetimes - and hopefully never will again. Collapse of the housing market, unemployment rates through the roof, banking crisis, bankruptcies, layoffs...you name it. It all equals one… Continue

It’s Friday. You got a date planned with your soul mate. Reservations were made in advance. Then Tom over in Accounting, a total Dork with a capital D, asks for an activity Report on all the candidates in the last six months.
Cindy in the PMO Group created half dozen flow charts on the Recruiting process. She is so impressed with her flowcharts she is convinced that this is the process that all Recruiters should follow. Problem. The flow chart includes weekly meal… Continue
It's a great job when it all comes together isn't it?
The last 12 months haven't been the best in industry, many people struggling to stay afloat, keep themselves relevant and employed across all markets. But TODAY, I got my groove back...
It didn't start well today. The bat signal was being loud and clear from a distressed constituent (AKA A grumpy/distressed call from the business). A hiring emergency was happening... "holy recruitment issues… Continue
I am one of those extremely lucky men who has the good fortune to get critiqued by my wife on a daily basis. I am not the only one, you know who you are out there if you’re like me, or better still…like my wife. Yes, on a daily basis as I am having what I believe might be a conversation about dinner at the Jones’ the night before, or the upcoming Scout meetings for the boys – I am being covertly scrutinized from head to toe about everything from the length of my hair or nails, my… Continue

I'm hearing from more and more good candidates how they get good feedback from the interview process and then, ... nothing. Their recruiters don't make any effort for closure and candidates are becoming more concerned that employers are making calls, checking backgrounds and/or using informal channels to weed out candidates earlier - and, like identity theft, if there's something out there that is wrong or erroneous - it has a definite impact on the candidate without recourse or even being… Continue

The Mechanic in a Suit: Harbinger of a Buyer’s Market

It hit me just the other day when the candidate I was interviewing for a shift mechanic position for a client of mine showed up for the interview in a suit and tie—not the usual dress code for the occasional shift mechanic candidate I might see. Further… Continue
It’s just Manny being Manny. That’s the line on Manny Ramirez, one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. Manny did steroids. That’s a bad thing. Manny seems to care only about Manny. That’s not good either. But……Manny gets the big hit…..All the time. The stats show that Manny’s home run to at bat ratio goes way up when the game is on the line and especially in big games and in the playoffs. At the most critical point, when nerves crush most players’ ability to perform, Manny just does… Continue

1) Decide! Do it, or decide not to do it. Don’t over think getting involved, learning about it, just start investigating today. If it is fear holding you back or lack of time, start one day at a time.
2) Think and plan! Have a goal and stick to it.
3) Research and Discover! Know what you want to use the resource for and the audience you want to develop or discover. Does that social media site operate in the manner you operate?… Continue

Recruiters know how to use the phone since they spend so much time calling clients and candidates yet many are ineffective in their ability to set appointments or present candidates. I still hear recruiters telling me all the time about how they submitted a candidate via email vs doing a call-and-present. Technology is a great asset to us but we need to get off email and do more F2F, especially in this market, and the best way to get there is to improve your phone skills.
Job seekers can now add Botox to the job search checklist just after resume and coverletter. In an increasingly youth-obsessed culture, job seekers look to physical enhancements to appear more confident and youthful in the job search. These enhancements vary from hair coloring, weight loss, Botox, and even plastic surgery.
And as the number of unemployed climbs above the 16 million mark, job seekers are becoming more conscious of ways to differentiate themselves from other candidates… Continue
This isn't the first time that the subject of closure has come up on this blog. In a previous post entitled Handling Non-acceptance, we told candidates not to focus on the things that they cannot change. Sometimes you will not know why you were not chosen for a… Continue
“References available upon request.” We are all extremely familiar with the phrase, or some variation thereof, indicating that a host of credible witnesses stand at the ready to affirm a candidate’s praises. Some modern day camps including the University of California at Berkeley and Emory University in Atlanta no longer recommend including the classic expression as a part of a polished and professional CV. It is now assumed that if the candidate is as fabulous as they claim, they will be able… Continue
