Buzz Off!.. No, On. Uhm, Off.

buzz Okay, so we've had Google Buzz for what boils down to a week now. And we've heard phrases like "what Wave should have been" or "the Twitter killer" or "the best thing in my Inbox." But on day 7 I think I'm going to assign my own analogy to… Continue

Has anyone set up a summer internship program in a recruiting agency?

I am a Managing Director for an NYC executive search firm and have been thinking of bringing on a summer intern. Has anyone set up a summer internship program in a recruiting agency? Any suggestions would be greatly welcome.

Multi posting what is it and do we need it?

Multiple posting is becoming an essential tool to have as a recruiter. It is common knowledge that no single job board can consistently produce results and quite often some vacancies need to be placed on up to 5 job boards (niche and generic) to return the required candidates to fill the position within a reasonable amount of time. An effective multipost service enables a significant reduction in the time to post adverts to job boards and manage the response from one place,…

GPS for Recruiting Passive Candidates

Recruiting activities have been slow as of late and like most of my clients, I have become more focused on my own operating budget. Now that I have fully accepted that cost consciousness is the new normal, I’ve done my part and have successfully completed my personal and corporate tax returns. That’s right, I did it all by myself!…

Generation Bowie – the original flexible workforce?

“Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it” (George Orwell)

“Talking ’bout my generation” (Pete Townsend, 1964)

‘Trying to forget your generation/I say your generation don’t mean a thing to me’ (Billy Idol, 1977)

I’m reading a lot of blogs lately concerning generational demographics, particularly looking at how the attitudes of…

Job clouds, job boards, and the job seeker

Matt Alder published a fascinating piece last week about ‘job clouds’ and why he thought Twitter could be the future of job boards. It was one of those “I wish I had written that!” moments for me, to be honest.

In brief, he posits the creation of a ‘job cloud’ created by multiple employer Twitter feeds of their jobs. This cloud would be much larger than any individual existing… Continue

Are you in the right job?

Because of what I do, friends often come to me for job advice. I remember a few years ago a good friend was looking to transition into something different and an opportunity fell into her lap and she asked me for my opinion. She was waitressing at the time and was very outgoing, a real 'people person'. But her career before waitressing was numbers related. She had been a fund accountant and then manager for years and did a great job, before layoffs hit. She was fortunate in that she…

The Hiring Decision - In the Current Job Market, Who’s on First?

I have had the opportunity to observe and be directly involved in hundreds of hiring decisions through the years.

As the saying goes, I have seen (almost) everything.

As the headhunter, we have the distinct pleasure of being the guys in the middle.

This allows us to speak with the employer and the candidate and get the perspective of everyone involved. Because of this, we sometimes find ourselves in the line of fire from 2 different directions.

The candidate… Continue

Writing a Resume? I've got some tough love for ya!

You've heard of tough love right? This is the kind of love that family members dispense to love one’s who either don't listen or refuse to follow the advice of their elders. Well, in response to all of the corporate generated schmaltz and fake romance from this previous Valentine weekend, I am inspired to dispense my own version of tough love. What is the object of my affection? Well.... writing resumes or, to be more specific, the people that use a resume to get IT positions in the DFW area -… Continue

Why don't Recruitment Ad Agencies do 'Twitter'?

Photobucket

Or Facebook. Or YouTube. Or many places in the world of Social Media? It's been a subject we've obviously noticed and been aware of for a while - especially as we're successfully involved in recruitment/employer branding ourselves.

Why the reticence? Many have set up Twitter accounts that tweet infrequently. Have they that little to talk about?… Continue

Recruiter/Client Relationships Matter

Job seekers should actively seek out the recruiters and companies who can have direct managerial contact with their clients, because it can dramatically increase their chances of getting the job. Having these direct relationships with the client doesn’t guarantee placements. However, in terms of probability, the likelihood of getting the job is increased when coupled with a great candidate and great relationship.

The Purr of the Iron Tiger

Today's NY Times reports on something I saw first-hand in Shanghai and Beijing: the Year of the Tiger got off to an early start and the Central Bank is trying to cool things down a bit.

What's bad news for the central bank is good news for the jobs market, at least from the candidate's perspective. From my perspective, this is good news about the recovery to come in the U.S. market,…
