I just finished reading this article entitled, Let Them Eat Tweets and like the author, I too can't help but think that social media is sucking users into a vortex whose pull and power from which they can never escape. In fact, as in as social media may be - and I'm a heavy user so don't call me a… Continue

My Dog Ate My Cell Phone & Other Nifty Excuses Why NOT to be Successful

With all the talk of recession, depression, and obsession with how 'bad it is' it is tough for most people to keep their thoughts positive. Personal Empowerment begins with making a choice to be grateful, optimistic and committed to the present and the future as a possibility. Happiness is a choice and it's a choice we all must make daily, if not hourly.

Last March with recession looming in the background I chose to forge forward with launching… Continue

The End of a Good Thing or the Beginning of Something Big

Someone just told me he is busy, cause there are fewer people to do the job. Unfortunately, this individual had to lay some people off in the past few months.

He sounded down.

I told him it is all about attitude. He can either be high or low and it is hard to be high if everyone around him is low. Yet, it is hard to be low if he is so busy he doesn’t have time to dwell on it.

You would think, If you had the chance you would keep your attitude high, cause it… Continue

Job Boards.... Not dead yet!

I was asked recently in an interview I did with Phillip Tusing on his site Destination Talent about the main source of my hires.

I know it seems to be en-vogue to proclaim the death of Job Boards, but I'm not convinced they are dead yet. Is it just because I am an internal recruiter and don't know any better? To… Continue

If you need to explain how something works, it probably won’t. Why designing ATS software for the critical users matters.

At Newton, we believe that the people who use our software the most aren’t necessarily the people that are critical to its success. Our “Critical User” is the person that uses Newton intermittently, every now and then, once a day, once a week, or maybe even less.

Up to this point, companies have designed business software almost entirely for what we might call a “Power User”, i.e. people that are going to use it day in and day out. If you… Continue

Lemons and Grape Juice

I like how Christie's is handling the recession; they've created a new business unit to sell corporate works of art. The rationale is that with balance sheets requiring more trips to the proverbial Home Depot, companies may be looking to sell their art. Someone at Chrtistie's sure is thinking.

Let's look at how companies and agencies have… Continue

I won't blame them for their ignorance

Being on the corporate side I have both enjoyed the benefits and suffered the frustrations of working directly with hiring managers. I find that the two are very closely related, though, and I have the ability to impact some the of trouble areas. In fact, I feel it is my responsibility in order to be productive and effective in my job.

I speak of the responsibility to educate hiring managers as to what the heck I actually do as a recruiter. Even though the managers and I are on the… Continue

Recruiting is Like Dating, How to Make Pop Culture and Business Meet

I was recently sitting at my desk, going through the day as I normally would, shifting through the endless sea of resumes that covers my desk, interviewing, responding to emails, and the quintessential duties of a devoted recruiter as I suddenly had a crazy idea. Why not compare recruiting to dating? I mean there are some serious similarities when you really look at the breakdown of human capital management, our fancy politically correct term for how to find the right talent for your company.… Continue

Following an exciting month of March Madness filled with exciting opportunities I have made the decision to join Albin Engineering in San Jose as a Partner and Vice President of Sales/Marketing. The Client Side - Building Strong Client Relationships. How do you do it?

Last week I touched on the subject of building a strong client base and how it is definitely, without question, a relationship thing. Over the course of the week a couple of conversations brought to mind the need to extend the subject to how it is done. Building strong relationships is a process. For me, it's a long term process, but I realize that there are all sorts of perspectives on how to go about this, what traits and what actions contribute to successfully building strong relationships… Continue

Exit Interviews

Whether due to a layoff, a firing, or a voluntary separation exit interviews tend not to be very enjoyable. Generally speaking people don't line up to be the company punching bag when an employee sounds off about what upset him/her enough to leave, or how he/she feels about being released. That said, I think as recruiters we need to be the ones making ourselves available for these sessions.

In many cases it was us who brought the employee on in the first place, so it is appropriate… Continue

Citigroup Surprise?

http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/17/news/companies/citigroup/index.htm?postversion=2009041706

I am not surprised they showed a profit (finally.) They laid off a ton of people and are lending "conservatively."

How to Handle "The Offer"

offer Alright, you have cleared all the hurdles and the company calls you and wants to tender an offer. How should I handle this?

Well, most of the time the person authorized to offer you a job will give a verbal offer over the phone. Basically it will be a high level summation of the offer:

  1. Job Title
  2. Base Salary
  3. Bonus Plan
  4. Anticipated Start…

The procrastination of the job search ...seminar

No, I'm not looking for a new job. I like where I am, and I'm reasonably secure, so I'm sticking around.

However, about a month ago, I looked into offering a job searching seminar at one of the local library branches. It seemed like a good idea (which came from the owner), so I contacted the library. Well, within days I had set up a meeting at the library, selected an appropriate room (well, auditorium), booked dates (as my little seminar turned into three three-hour long seminars in… Continue
