Millennials have been given derogatory labels like: lazy, disrespectful, irresponsible, sloppy, and uneducated. We resent these names of course, but before we shoot…

I am new to this field and would like to know a little about everyone's experience as both a corporate recruiter and as an agency recruiter.

We may not be proud of it, but even the best of us get hooked on really bad reality TV shows. Most recently I found myself glued to Remodeled – a show that stars modeling industry veteran Paul Fisher, who’s planning to bring together hundreds of small modeling agencies around the world in a new venture called The Network. His mission is to make sure modeling agents…

It might be the most curious phenomenon in the recruiting world: why do tech companies make room in their employee selection process for college dropouts? Instead of trawling Ivy League schools for the next generation of programmers and developers, some of America’s most profitable tech companies aim much, much lower. But is that really what they’re doing?
To shed some light on the subject, we decided to ask several tech CEOs…

If you have been watching the Olympics as I have over the past month, you have more than likely heard about McKayla Maroney’s story. But if not, here it is in a nutshell:
After winning a team gold with the US women’s gymnastics team, it was her time to shine in the individual events and her specialty, the vault (for which she was the world champion and overwhelming favorite.) She had the greatest difficulty (and pressure) of all the competitors and with one mis-step she…

In this economy, recent college grads are not the only people hopelessly searching for work. Many Gen Xers and Baby Boomers with years of experience under their belts find themselves out of work with the recent recession. The unemployment rate is still miserably high at 8.3% and the number of college graduates returning home is higher than ever, at about 50%. It may seem like a good plan…

It's great we are talking about creating postings that go far beyond the typical job description. I'm sure you can do that without talking to your hiring manager, but getting them involved pays off in multiple ways.
Below are some questions that will pull out some good information from your hiring managers they might not share otherwise.
It’s especially important to ask your hiring manager these questions to:
a) Get this info in the hiring manager’s words because…

part·ner·ship - A relationship between individuals, groups or organizations that is characterized by mutual cooperation and responsibility, as for the achievement of a specified goal.
Ever since I started in the recruiting business the terms partner and partnership have been part of my vocabulary. I am sure that any recruiter reading this would say the same. We all would like to be…

If your company is struggling to find new talent, is it possible that your job descriptions could be to blame? It’s a question worth asking, because your “now hiring” advertisements determine, in part, just who applies for your position. Craft your ads the right way and you’ll capture the attention of talented innovators.
Write a generic post, on the other hand, and you may as well head to the nearest street corner and shout, “Who wants a job!” If you’re…

What is the best recruiter cultural environment? Of course the answer is not simple because we all respond to different leadership and cultural environments. Some are more personally motivated and do not need sales pressures – they know and do their job. Others require a little push to help keep their focus and motivation high. Neither is better or worse but there is a place where you turn a little push into a hotel environment and that becomes destructive.
I was reading an…

In the 19th century, it was the Industrial Revolution. In the 1950's, it was the shift from blue collar to white collar work. And some are predicting that we are now at the beginning of another workforce revolution: a shift from permanent employment to contingent work.
In his book Labor Rising, The Past and Future of Working People in…

Let’s talk about dating. Some of you are single, and some of you are married, but all of us have gone on a date at some point in our lives. I can remember several instances where I was anxious to get out of that dinner/date because it wasn’t a match and I knew early on in the evening. I know you can relate.
It may have been their political views, their…

Epiphany?
No new news here.
Interesting thoughts after meeting several candidates in person this week in Tokyo. Though its officially Holidays this week in Japan - Obon Yasumi, when people go back to their hometowns to pay respect to their ancestors that have passed - I own my own boutique company with staff around the Globe who are working normal hours so no break for me.
Several candidates admitted to accessing Facebook on a daily basis, more…

For many employees, escaping the routine 9-5 and working from home is a common daydream. This option allows the individual to forgo the cubicle for the comforts of one’s own home, whether to start their own business or partake in freelance opportunities. A home-based job gives the individual the opportunity to become his or her own boss, with the ability to set their own…

I posted this this week on my regular blog (www.viewfrommadisonave.blogspot.com) but thought it worth sharing with Recruiting Blog readers.
There are many misconceptions about offer letters. However, before you read this post, please be aware that this is not intended to be legal advice. However, I want my readers and candidates to know what an offer letter is and is…

Recently I stumbled across some pretty great 'mobile friendly' job descriptions on ESPN's career site. Check these out. These are the best designed jobs I've ever seen for a mobile device.
1) great logo placement and clicking arrows leads to the full text of the job description.
2) What job seekers want to know...link to a employer branding video and info about what its like to work…

Within a given recruitment marketing strategy, you will be crafting and sharing a number of recruitment messages and content that aim to provide value to your overall recruiting performance. From your job ads, to your Career Site landing pages to your email campaigns, your organization will be interacting with candidates consistently through the messages you produce from a recruiting perspective.
And while job ads are the most talked about form of messaging that people talk…

Maybe I’m the only one, but I was surprised when I heard Olympic athletes get performance bonuses for bringing home medals. In Canada our medal winners can expect $20K for gold, $15K for silver and $10K for bronze. It’s a practice we started in 2008 and the bill, as of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, is roughly $2.3M. It’s great to see that we’re supporting our athletes, but it did raise a few questions.
Like, what does a gold medal taste…
