How NOT to recruit someone.....

We all read a ton of articles about how to recruit people, where to find people blah blah blah.  Right?  I mean, it’s almost like information overload with regard to how to find great candidates.  One thing I’m finding though, with all this talk of how to find people.....I’d like to focus on how NOT to recruit someone.  Why?  Well, l’m noticing all these great recruiting tools have made recruiters lazy.  Rather than picking up the phone…

Reflections of a Headhunter - The Mental Game

I find what we, collectively, do to be amazing.  We headhunters are the envoys of employment, the captains of commerce, the of potentates of potential!!  We help our clients accomplish their challenging goals by finding and securing for them the talent they need to succeed.

It really is a beautiful thing, man.

I've been feeling especially reflective because I am heading into my 5th year of being in business for myself. I've been a recruiter for wow, 17 years, I can…

Why should I become an independent contractor?

1. Better pay.

According to The Wall Street Journal, contractors are usually paid at least 20% to 40% more per hour than employees performing the same work.

2. More tax benefits.

According to NOLO.com:

Being an IC also provides you with many tax benefits that…

3 Things that you should KNOW about your recruiting!

For any recruiting organization to be successful it is important to know what recruiting activities are driving performance in bringing in the most qualified candidates and hires. To know this information, you need to set up a way to collect metrics and analytics in your recruiting process and most importantly a way to easily display this recruitment marketing data so you can make quick informed decisions on ways to improve your recruiting strategy.

But what data and metrics…

Social Media vs. Social Recruiting

An interesting topic I have been wrangling recently is the convergence of Corporate Social Media and Corporate Social Recruiting. While the two seem to align perfectly with each other, they are proving more and more difficult to sync up. One would think, at least this one person, that social recruiting and social media have the same end goal in mind, but the problem is aligning the social strategy to new talent and aligning the social strategy to new clients is very different. This can lead…

Size doesn't matter...

I tried to make a point at the recent #SRCONF that, when it comes to the employer brand, size no longer matters.  Big is not longer beautiful.  Money no longer talks - people do. Judging by the looks on the faces of the audience I failed miserably.

Ultimately I was trying to make the point that the new social order completely democratises the…

"Have you got any roles in internal recruitment?"

A two part blog .....

I speak to agency recruiters all day ......some approach me looking for a new role and others are recipients of a headhunting call. Something that I am hearing more and more these days is the following sentence (or a version of):

"Have you got any roles in internal recruitment"

Fair enough. However, the majority of people that give me this response are not able to provide any well considered reasons for…

What every great recruiter already knows: The top 10 ways to keep your clients happy

Successful recruiters, this article is not meant for you. The list outlined below is your mantra, your daily routine with your clients. You know that recruitment is a relationship based business, and that you are only as good as the relationships that you have built and nurtured with your hiring managers.

  1. Know their business. You can’t expect them to invest in you until you have invested in them. Go to their department and or sales…

Random Thoughts On Recruiting - We Are The New Japan

This is a great and quick look at where I think we are right now in regard to business conditions. For some time I have thought that we are much like Japan, 20 years later. They peaked in 1989 with a huge bubble and an older population, way too much leverage. 22 years later, there has been no real recovery from that. Not a depression, just a long malaise.

We peaked in '07. I don't think we have gone through any real deleveraging yet. To me it looks like we have a long road ahead,… Continue

Are candidates running TO your opportunity or AWAY from something else?

“I want people who are coming TO us, not running away from something bad.  You know, bad job, bad boss, they’re unemployed; I can find those people no problem.  I want people who WANT to work here.”

Interesting words spoken by one of my hiring managers during a recruiting meeting.  I was fresh off my blog “job seeking is a lot like dating” so naturally I’m picturing the goofs on The Bachelorette always running to each other… bad visual.  Then I really thought about what he…

How To: Effective Boolean Searching

A little background first, for those that are not familiar.

Boolean searching uses the functions of Boolean algebra to deliver the most relevant results. Boolean algebra was developed by George Boole in 1854. Instead of using numbers like traditional algebra, Boolean algebra uses truth values or equivalency to deliver the results. See more on the history of Boolean algebra…

Let Me Guess: You Figure Using Social Media to Attract Talent Is a Bunch of BS, Right?

Recently, a number of recruiting and HR leaders have told me that they’ve “tried this whole social media thing to recruit, but it hasn’t worked out so well.” These folks read about the buzz surrounding social media, heard of how other organizations were using it to successfully recruit, and figured “If it works for them, why don’t we give it a try?”

Well, you can probably guess from the title of this article how that experiment ended: after signing up for some tools, paying…

In-House Recruiters/HR v Agency Recruiters

Yesterday I saw a tweet from @greg_savage referencing his blog post about HR and Internal Recruiters needing to lift their game. There were some decent points, some of which I've talked about in other posts. I actually think that some of Greg's observations are also true of agency recruiters too! It's also important to realise there is a difference between an HR…

An Insider's Opinion Regarding Corporate and Agency Recruiters

First, let me explain that I spent several years earning my chops as an agency recruiter at some really small shops. This meant I was always fighting an uphill battle against the big boys in the space that had name recognition, a volume over margin focus, and huge databases. I was able to parlay that experience with a Masters Degree in Human Resource Development in order to switch over to the dark side of corporate recruiting and HR. What I have learned in making this switch has been…

Job Market Concerns Haven’t Stopped Hiring Demand for Recruiters

Despite reports of rising unemployment and layoffs, hiring demand for Recruiters has steadily increased this year.  In July, direct employers and staffing firms advertised more than 10,000 new jobs online for Recruiters and Employment Specialists – up 15% since the beginning of the year.

Hiring Demand for Recruiters – 4 Years…

Today's Economy - Is There Hope?

It is without a doubt one of the most historic times of our economic windfall.  Everywhere you look there is doom and gloom discussion, individuals getting overwhelmed, and political rumblings, and a historic downgrade of the US credit rating.  The Dow dropped 600+ points, but yet there is still hope.

We need to look long and hard these days at giving individuals hope.  Is there any wonder that the Recruiting/Staffing professional of today can be a powerful voice that gets…
