Diaries of a rookie recruiter

I've been in this business for about 1 yr, but I still consider myself a rookie. I work remotely and run a full desk. Because of my solitude, I dont think my development has been as fast as I had hoped. I'm really going to pour the steam on from hear on out. the next 3 months will be make or break for me. I thought that keeping a diary and sharing thoughts and ideas here, might be something that will help me grow and learn more quickly. I've never blogged before and dont know if anyone even… Continue

Waterboarding At Work?

I came across two job-related news items over the weekend that can only be classified as BIZARRE to say the least.

At first, I thought I was reading some satire the likes of which are usually seen on popular sites like The Onion, but to my surprise these were legitimate news stories.

Stories like Employee’s Suit: Company Used Waterboarding To Motivate Workers and… Continue

The Week Ahead

Cool week ahead ~ currently working on several requirements for clients in the telecom/wireless world. That will keep me busy every day, but then there's a couple more things I'm looking forward to:

Wednesday - speaking to a graduate class at DBU about recruiting and web 2.0. Love doing this - lots of questions and great discussion.

Thursday - unless you've been asleep for 2 weeks, you probably know about the… Continue

I Just Don't FIT In A Box!

I received an email the other day from LinkedIn pal, Larry Megugorac, who is a Business Development/Sales professional, saying:

“I’ve got to hand to you....I cannot figure out how a former Accountant goes into Recruiting.

Obviously being in sales before-hand helped tremendously. I always thought that Accountants were a conservative group. Recruiters only get paid when they make a successful placement right? I thought… Continue

Feeding My Inner-Geek

Do you have an inner-geek? Boy, I sure do.

Maybe you don’t have an inner-geek, but you do have an inner-artist or an inner-writer or an inner-athlete. Whatever you have, it is very important that you keep them fed.

Back in 2002, my inner-geek had not been fed in a very long time; that is how I ended up in accounting. It started with a class that my company sent me to which was designed to teach us how to speak to C-level executives. The instructor started the class by… Continue

Keeping the Faith, Even on the Toughest Searches

How many times have I wanted to give up just before success? It's like wanting to quit right before a runner wins the marathon. You've put forth everything you've got, or so you think, and you aren't seeing the results yet. You want to throw in the towel right before victory. I have found that one more email, one more phone call, one more hour has been the key to success. Just a little bit more. It's like those last five crunches that I just "can't" do. That's when I tell myself, "Just five… Continue

Are you "shoulding" on yourself?

Have you ever taken on a job or a task because you felt you SHOULD rather than because you wanted to?

I went to a networking event earlier this week, hosted by the Association of Women MBAs (AWM). The session was a presentation by Nancy Monson, a certified Coach whose practice focuses on “individual, team and organizational leadership”.

The title of the presentation was “Living a Life… Continue

Using Shared Experience To Build Your Network

How many experiences do you think you share with the hundreds of people you walk past on the street?

Last weekend I went to an annual road show networking event held by my high school’s alumni organization. The school is Emma Willard School, which tags itself as a “Private Independent School for Girls”. I have to say that I feel incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity (and financial aide) to attend such a fine institution at such a… Continue

Are you waiting for Monday to "kick you in the ass"?

Do you recall a particular moment in time that caused you to change the entire course of your life? I definitely do.

A long, long time ago, at least three careers ago, I worked for the State of New York. It was my first job out of college and the job was related to my freshly minted bachelor’s degree in Media Communications. It was also a “good” job with the “good” benefits, or so I was told by my entire family who lived in the capital city area of Albany, New York.

I… Continue

Worst States For Job Hunting

If you’re a Recruiter, a good piece was published the other day on CNN’s website regarding the worst states for job hunting that you should spend some time with.

One frequently overlooked, but critical factor in finding a new job is a state’s Unemployment Rate - - hardly a news flash to us in the Recruiting industry.

The Unemployment Rate is the percentage of job seekers in the work force who are still looking for work. The higher the percentage, the more difficult it is… Continue

RecruitingBlogs.com Networking Party in Dallas (from your Roving Recruiter Reporter on the Dallas Freeways)

With only seven days to go before the inaugural "RecruitingBlogs.com Dallas Networking Party," Roving Reporter Dennis Smith unleashes the 2nd in a series of absolutely worthless video segments.

3rd Party Splits - The Pro-Rata Guarantee

I have found that the simplest way to conduct split fee agreements is to operate on a Pro-Rata Guarantee. Essentially what this means is, the client holding agency disburses fees as warranty milestones pass, therefore alleviating any need to worry about chasing down other 3rd parties should the client require refund, or worse nagging 3rd parties to fulfill a replacement guarantee.

The way I have seen this work most effectively is in thirds. Supposing the average warranty time frame… Continue

Build Your Talent Pool, Strickland Style

Yes there are National skill shortages, but this national problem can only be answered locally. Every locale has its very own personality, needs, and in this case skill gaps. You weren't naive enough to think we could just start-up a national skill factory and answer the problem did you. The root of the problem is LOCAL and to answer this problem you can't expect national answers.

Hard questions...

What are you doing… Continue

Why Everything You Do Today, Matters Three Years From Now

My good buddy and colleague, Paul Myers (VP, Business Dev - WorldLink, Inc) convinced me that I needed to attend an HR Breakfast Briefing this morning sponsored by HR Search Firm (Levy Curry) and Challenger, Gray, and Christmas, Inc.

Breakfast - speaker - and networking ... all excellent. But it's the networking part that's had me scratching my head all day.

I was speaking with… Continue
