Question:
Why do fellow recruiting professionals with 'LION' on their LinkedIn profile click 'I Don't Know This Person' when you send them an invite.
I mean, if you have LION in your profile, aren't you saying you're a "Linked In Open Networker?" I've had it happen 2x where LIONs click they don't know me . . . and it's always been fellow TPRs'.
So I called a buddy of mine and he said the same had happened to him last month . . . so he took it upon himself to…

The HR Capitalist claims that the internet has made recruiters into sissies.
Between 2004 and 2006 everyone had an email account and checked it regularly. All that you, as a recruiter, had to do was email a job description to potential candidates and you would hear back from them toot sweet.
Since 2007 everyone has more than one email address. And the email addresses on their old resumes are rarely…

I ran into an issue this morning that I thought to share with the rest of you. Let me know if you've run into similar situations:
I work in a very tight niche. In one geographic case, there are 2 competitors located approx 15 miles from one another - furthermore, there are no other direct competitors for less than 150 miles, meaning a relo would be in order if I was to recruit from same said sector. The result? A premium on local directly competitive talent.
Today, I spoke…

There’s no substitute for an in depth conversation with you about what kind of candidate you’re really looking for. I’d like to know what kind of personality fits into your agency. I’d like to know what sort of questions you’d like me to ask and what sort of answers you’re looking to get back. There’s no way I can really find who you need without this important step in the process being completed.
That being said, let’s not underestimate the importance of a job description.…

I saw Marcus Buckingham speak at a Willow Creek Leadership event last summer. I was surprised and delighted with his message and it was quite simple. Go do what you do really well, and stop doing anything you don't do well.
While most people view his words as inspirational yet hard to practice; I am at a unique point in my life, maybe it is the double digit 44 thing or maybe it is the 20 odd years I have spent in the staffing and recruiting space. I view his words as a call to…

Does being an LION (LinkedIN Open Networker) give you the excuse to be an idiot? I’ve made some great connections recently via Open Networking, however, it has it’s drawbacks.
I’ve recently received a barrage of LinkedIN invitations from, well, idiots. They may be nice people, but some people should never turn on a computer. I thought that everyone knew that when you send email to a distribution list that you shouldn’t put everyone’s email in the TO: field …right? I mean this is like…

Don’t underestimate how important thank you letters are in the job interview process. Everybody “knows” they’re critical, but unbelievably, not everyone writes them. Thank you letters accomplish several things:
1) They get your name in front of the hiring manager one more time.
2) They are your last chance to package yourself as the best, most qualified person for the job.
3) They are polite, and manners count.
4) They help you land the…

I thought about coming up with a rhyme to accompany this post . . . but I couldn't bring myself to do it. If you're wondering why, it'll make sense in un momento:
"
McDonald's robber among finalists for new jingle"
Our boy, Tamien Bain, served 12 years after holding up (at gunpoint) a McDonalds in 1994 . . . .
. . . And is among five finalists in… Continue

In the early spring of this year, the flowers were blooming, birds were singing, and I began to plan my summer garden. The previous year was a complete bust for my container garden. Poor location coupled with an unusually cool and cloudy summer doomed my basil and tomatoes from the outset, and my peppers didn’t fare much better. Relocating the container garden to my back yard would afford it better sunshine (if there was sunshine to be had) and a location that would make it easier to water and…
