No Blogs, No Fluff, No Functionality, No Web Site! Just A ‘Coming Soon’ Page.

Thanks to Riveting Rosie for calling out one of the worst web gaffs I’ve seen in a long time. First, the new logo for JobFinderUSA is, as Rosie rightly points out, a total rip-off of LinkedIn,

which by itself is an egregious flaw for any company. Secondly, I’m not

sure… Continue

On job descriptions and selling value...

Quote for the Day: Monday, July 30th, 2007

"If you sit down with the hiring manager, ask them about their business, take a look at the resumes of employees who were previously successful in the hiring manager’s organization, and then use specialized services to deliver passive candidates that can’t be found through posting on a job board, then you are selling value. You can charge a little more and be a little less efficient, because you offer something better…

Is Second Life too risqué for business?

According to the LA Times, companies in Second Life are working too hard and paying too much to reach too few visitors, compared to other traditional and more cost effective advertising mediums. End result, many companies are closing their doors in Second Life. The question is, will they return another day…

Guy Who Has A Recruiting Blog Gets A Job

I have some exciting personal news to share today. Last week I accepted an offer from Dave Manaster to come join ERE and help build the Fordyce Letter.

This is an incredible opportunity for me. I really like the recruiting business and I really like it from a third party recruiter’s perspective. I started subscribing to the Fordyce Letter almost 10…

It's easy to fall victim to...

It's easy to conform to the worlds many winding roads.

Wouldn't you rather be the path that has many intersections to decide what is good for you?

Don't let yourself become so off track that you lose yourself, is it worth it?

I think not, when planning is not an issue and goals aren't either then you're in trouble!

Remember to follow your path and make a left or a right from time to time, but never take that steep incline, becaue you'll be trying to get back on…

Job Boards as a Source of Hire - Growth since 2001

Job Boards / Sites have been growing on a steady clip in the last 5 years — I’ve been putting together some of the numbers from CareerXRoads - who seem to be one of the only sites online that compile year to year statistics of Job Source of Hire statistics (anyone…

Offboarding - the rules for professionally resigning from your company

In today’s market place where you may work remotely on a virtual team and your boss may be hundreds if not thousands of miles away people are struggling with just how to resign professionally. OK some aren’t, but they’re the ones who will type “I QUIT” on a piece of paper with a 72 font size and sign their name. So we won’t listen to them since we’re trying to not burn any bridges and we would prefer to have people say good things about us after we’re long gone.

The…

Charlie's Angels or T-Mobile Recruiting?

I was in Chicago most of this week in training. Since a lot of the team was there we managed to get a picture on the last day (thanks Carrie for bringing your camera!).

After the picture, a guy yelled at me from across the parking lot, saying -

"Hey, it looks like you're making a
Charlie's Angels…

On "Recruiter, re-tool thyself"...

Quote for the Day: Friday, July 27th, 2007

"The solution is that we need to re-engineer the thinking of the recruiters. In my experience many of them believe they have to always

be in control. This has had its' down side it alienates and infuriates

candidates, it drags out the recruitment process which adds costs and

it frustrates the company that is trying to fill a position. Why can't

we make positive changes to this…

The Career News Says "Simple"

Ever since I met a few recruiters, I've looked at some of these e-mails with suspicion. Really? How easy is it? I'd love to know how recruiters feel about e-mails like these ... here are the opening graphs:

"It's simple. To get a job, the people looking to hire someone like you have to know you exist, be aware of your skills and know how to contact you. Well, maybe not so simple. Assuming you have a resume that effectively represents your skills and abilities, then the next logical… Continue

Wanna Play?

I am about the only geek on this blog that raves about the gaming industry. But honestly, how can you ignore a 10 billion dollar industry that is expected to grow to 25 billion in the next five years. Companies are hard pressed to find people who can do the work. Plus, Game Conferences, like the GDC, are shifting a lot of their focus from new game products to careers in gaming. And,Game Conferences are growing… Continue
