Professional Instinct: When It's OK To Go With The Good Feeling You Have About That Candidate

You won’t hear me use the word “feel” very often when it comes to the screening process. As a general rule, you have to be careful not to rely too much on your personal feelings when it comes to recruiting. If you are not disciplined enough to put qualifying the candidate first, you will not find the best candidate for the position. First and foremost you must …

Is LinkedIn kicking the competition while they are down?

If English is not your first language chances are that you are active on more than one professional network such as LinkedIn. Services like Viadeo, Xing and others are then probably part of your social media strategy.

The hard news is that since the rise of LinkedIn-Today these platforms are clearly struggling to find a model with which to compete. Their biggest challenge is to make their users coming back and engage.

LinkedIn has not only understood and perfected the art of…

Some Things are Worth Repeating

A coworker of mine absolutely detests the phrase, "Recruiting is a lot like dating." She says it's cliche and trite; and she is right. The problem, though, with cliches and all things trite, is that they are true.

Why is bears repeating that Recruiting is a lot like Dating:

  1. There is the obvious "courting" that occurs in both dating and recruiting, with recruiters often serving the role of "Match Maker" between candidates and companies
  2. Dating and…

What’s wrong with recruitment…and how to fix it!

What’s wrong with recruitment…and how to fix it!

This could potentially be a VERY long post because I’m talking about an industry that has many inherent flaws. In my opinion, many of the problems we see stem from some fundamental issues that recruiters have wrought upon themselves and customers…

The Real Reasons Why Corporate Recruiters Hate You

Agency and corporate recruiters have always had this love/hate relationship. It’s a sibling rivalry of sorts – in some cases each thinks the other doesn’t know what they’re doing. After 10+ years on the agency side, I have a great deal of admiration and respect for those that do it well. I also have a newfound respect for my corporate brothers and sisters as I enter my 7th month on the dark side. I still maintain that recruiters shouldn't be allowed to go internal until they've…

Staffing Agencies - Can we do it better?

As the first and oldest staffing agency in Columbus, we have dubbed ourselves the “match makers” of Columbus between businesses and job seekers.  With our main focus being to get our candidates work and to keep our clients happy, we are constantly thinking of other ways to make our company stand out.

For a job seeker, our process includes an interview, background check, drug screen, video resume, computer testing and a recruiter available for every question and need - This…

Not All Recruiters or Recruitment Agencies are Vultures...or Vampires...

Not all recruiters or recruitment agencies are vultures...or vampires for that matter.  When they cold call--they simply want to help in the recruitment challenges an employer faces.
If they appear to be stalking you as a candidate, or as an employer rep--they are simply trying to get access to interested parties, preferably decision makers--and they are 100% dedicated to a mutual benefit.

Yes, there are some bad apples; some…

Ethics and Morals...Does it matter when starting an Agency?

After working years for an employment agency I realized that there is no personal connections between the client and agency. It just seemed to me that many times a client will give the agency a list of the qualities they need in a new worker and an agency just sorts through their file and pretty much "picks a name out of the hat" sort of say. Seeing many failures and no communication and personal connections I was not satisfied and decided to start an Agency of my own.

I have this… Continue

The Client Side - Hoping for a January bounce

Since my business is focused on the Client Side of permanent placement recruiting, I thought it would be valuable to share what we're experiencing on this end on a regular basis. So here goes...

The last half of December is typically very slow and this year it was the same as it has been in the past, thankfully. To the contrary, the September - October - November period was not even close to anything we had seen in the past. During that period the level of fear that clients… Continue

Your prospects have internal recruiters. What can you do that they can't?

Internal corporate recruiters have a number of advantages.

They can interact with the managers.

They understand the corporate culture.

They are more up to date on changing requirements and priorities.

They know who was recently hired.

They have access to the company database of candidates.

They can use the company accounts for job boards.

They can place ads on the company website.

They can review the incoming resumes.

So with all this… Continue
