Leveling the Field: Remaining Competitive in an Evolving Web Marketplace

Version changes. Upgrades. Migrations. The world of web is constantly evolving. Almost as quickly as my wardrobe in fall!

Case in point, some topics of interest:

• To HTML5 or not to HTML5?

• Is the web dead? Are applications taking over?

• Cross browser compatibility?

• Flash and iPhone? GASP

• The future of Flash?

One topic that is always mutually agreeable is the concept of keeping up with emerging trends and adding to your repertoire. You have… Continue

What's Your Employment Value Proposition?

I was speaking with one of our interns the other day about the HR Technology marketplace. In particular, he asked what really differentiated one technology provider from the next as they all sounded like they did the same thing. After taking another look at the messaging on the websites, he was right. So many companies talked about the same benefits and lacked a clear unique value proposition on their site. The question is, how will a Recruiting Director be able to make an… Continue

Results of the Job Board Future survey are here!

In August, I began gathering data from job seekers, HR professionals, recruiters, and job board employees and operators on the future of job boards and the methods for finding jobs and candidates. Now, 275 responses later, we have some results.

Each survey respondent identified him or herself as a job seeker, a HR or recruiting professional, or a job board employee or operator. Based on their response to that question, they then answered a series of questions specific to…

Job boards must evolve or die

Over a year ago, I wrote about the changes in the job board world. I also promised myself I wouldn’t write about job boards ‘dying’ for at least a year. Well, time’s up!

Are some job boards dying? Well, of course they are. All industries have some companies that are dying – and some that are growing. So,…

Career Advice from the Circus

"Palpitating pageant of pachyderms, pulchritude and pantomime! Desperately dangerous displays of unrivaled aerialism! Colossally comic comedians! Dainty and dexterous displays of principal bareback equitation!"

Do those phrases bring back childhood memories of the circus?… Continue

How to find and extract qualified resumes from the Internet search ?

Do you think you can find the right candidate for the right job when your resume database has resumes that were updated a year or years ago? Certainly not. There is every possibility that candidates might have updated their resumes – may be added a few certifications, acquired skill sets, domain experience or even changed their contact details, etc. So it is very vital for recruiters and hiring managers to find and extract the updated and qualified… Continue

Social media, recruiting, and job boards: which way are we going?

If you follow my Twitter stream, you no doubt noticed I spent last week at #truManchester. It was a great experience – I listened to many recruiters and HR pros talk about how they use social media in their recruiting (or hope to), and what they think about job boards. (I also learned that the British have switches on their power outlets, are extremely hospitable, and don’t open their pubs until noon).

A few observations:

  • Company attempts to outlaw or…

Resume Designing - Is it lying?

I have been debating résumé designing with a close colleague who has been in a very difficult employment situation. This colleague has an abundance of experience across a number of industries but has recently found themselves at a crossroad. Faced with the challenge of determining if they want to remain in the same profession and line of business (Corporate/Government), or return to their previous… Continue

Take this job and shove it!

The job market has been brutal for a while now. Unfortunately, layoffs, downsizings and closings have all been a major part of today’s society. The unemployed have taken jobs they are over qualified for just to make ends meet. It’s been a trying couple of years. We’ve all been affected in one way or another.

Not surprisingly, recent studies show, the employed are…

Be the needle in the haystack...

A few days ago, I told my husband the story of my brother and his unique approach to interviewing and finding a job. With perseverance, creativity, preparation and bit of luck, he landed the opportunity of a lifetime!

Like so many other people adversely affected by the staggering economy, he was laid off several months ago resulting from a reduction in force. Adding insult to injury, the layoff occurred two weeks before Christmas, and the family’s holiday cheer evaporated…
