LinkedIn Tutorial, Part 2

Searching within LinkedIn groups' members is limited to keywords only. If you search from within a group it may take a lot of time to sort out the results. However there is a way to do an advanced search within groups (one or more) and contact members - for free, without a paid account required.

Here is an example.

Looking for J2EE Engineers on LinkedIn (as an example).

1. Join all LinkedIn groups that are relevant. Search for groups in the group section… Continue

Persistence

“I took your course but to tell you the truth, I just don’t have the TIME to do what you do,” the caller explained, almost apologetically, before asking if I had time to take on some more work. She then went on to describe her long background in recruiting, admitting in the tale that it has always been the front-end part of the job, the sourcing, that she has never really been comfortable with. Not only did she find it awkward, she explained, she also… Continue

'Tis the season to be hired: Advice for employers

When it comes to holiday hiring, employers need to put together a recruitment plan well before the radio stations start playing “Jingle Bell Rock” every half hour. Whether you’re the hiring manager of a restaurant franchise or you own a small clothing store in the mall, there’s no denying that business picks up starting as early as November 1. In fact, according to an article in The San Francisco Chronicle, both independent and chain stores have seen a rise in sales between 45 and 170 percent… Continue

You get what you pay for...

These last few weeks have been a rollercoaster – as a Head Huntress and as an American. Wall Street is in shambles, our bailout didn’t really do any bailing out, unemployment is going up, our Presidential candidates are debating but not necessarily answering any questions, people are scrambling to maintain standards of living, our greatest joy is the return of Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are more popular than ever, and I can’t seem to understand the hiring patterns of… Continue

Web 3.0 Jobs Board

Original post and comments are on:

Web 2.0 with its main characteristic that ‘Everyone Can Publish’ didn’t really make much difference to the jobs web sites. Even the ‘Most Professional’ social network LinkedIN did not have much of the impact on the job boards, even to the ones tightly integrated with it like… Continue

Narcissists in charge but don't outperform others as leaders

"Narcissists like to be in charge, so it stands to reason that a new study shows individuals who are overconfident about their abilities are most likely to step in as leaders, be they politicians or power brokers.

However, their initiative doesn't mean they are the best leaders. The study also found narcissists don't outperform others in leadership roles."

An unscientific study by recruiters - who themselves scored high on narcissism scales - included comments such… Continue

Job Search Tip: Complete the Entire Job Application

Latest story: A hiring manager I am working with in medical sales asked for a completed job application, rather than just a resume. The job is a 65 -75k base, with another 45k up for grabs in commissions. Nothing to sneeze at, surely. When the manager reviewed the application, he discovered that the candidate didn’t fill out the references area or any of the money questions. (You do leave this stuff off a resume, but not off an application when they are specifically asked for.) The manager that… Continue

Seth Godin and Tribal Marketing

Source: From Gaping Void, Interview With Seth Godin

I like Seth Godin. But when I read point number one in this interview, I had to wonder if I'm dumb.

He claims to be saying something radical but it seems to be a confusing restatement of the most basic business principle: If you provide a product to a market that wants it you are going to be successful.

Or is he saying that if you want… Continue

College Recruiting... Like Corporate Does?

So I've a friend that is a college recruiter. But not like you'd probably think. Most people hear the term 'College Recruiter' and think of a fast talker looking to get new grads to attend their college because of this sports program or that sports program. Others might imagine a corporate (or professional sports) type that hits the colleges to impress juniors and seniors with great corporate culture or career opportunities.

My friend recruits for people to attend college… Continue

Hispanic Culture, Hispanic Recruiting

"Hispanics often are raised in environments in which they’re taught not speak up and that sharing their accomplishments constitutes bragging."

"People tend to assume all Hispanics are the same — that’s like assuming everyone who speaks English is the same."

"The death rate of frontline Hispanics in the manufacturing and construction industries is higher than any other group, so organizations would be wise to implement work-safety training programs in Spanish for those…

Gen Y meltdown? Is there going to be an evolution in the generation Y revolution?

"Sea of candidates"

There's a reason people associate used-car salesmen with charlatans. Cars went from a luxury to an absolute necessity, and with the proliferation of models, brands and personalization of automobiles, who's to know if the one you're getting is better or worse than an equally priced one next door?

Similarly, Software Professionals have gone from targeting their careers to sophisticated design of top secret military programs or higher education applications to being requested for pretty… Continue
