Way off topic but hey, it's Friday

As a UVM grad and an attendee when Ben and Jerry's started up their enterprise in an old gas station bordering the square in downtown Burlington, VT, when I read this today, many words passed my lips...

In response to our letter, Ben and Jerry's issued the following statement: "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

PETA,… Continue

Selecting Difference Makers - A How To Guide

It’s no secret that a major driver of corporate success is putting the right person in the right role the first time. In fact, statistics from the Harvard Business Review and other leading human resources thought leaders indicate that as much as 60%-85% of the retention problems many companies face are directly related to defects in the hiring process. Serving as recruiters and search firms for our clients, it’s our job to help them reverse… Continue

My top 50 groups on Linkedin. And my criteria for keeping them.

My Linkedin groups

A few weeks ago Linkedin implemented a change in the number of group an individual could join on the network. I was a huge proponent of joining groups as a way of attracting new invitations. But with the policy change I've had to make some decisions on which groups to remain a member of. So I culled my original member list of 480 groups down to the 49 you see below. The criteria was simple; a) group had to relevant to my interests and or needs as an owner of HTC Research… Continue

Sumser's Dallas Recruiting Roadshow...

I finally managed to attend one of Sumser's Recruiting Roadshow - and I'm glad I went. With great speakers presenting there was no shortage on good information to review - although this, in my opinion, wasn't the real win of the event.

The feel of the event was very much UNlike your typical conference. The focus was truly local and had more of a 'town hall' vibe. It would seem that… Continue

Staffing tricks of the trade

I have been involved in recruitment since the fall of 2000 having enjoyed recruiting for multiple disciplines. I have supported both corporate and third party; first attracting the best and most qualified Architect, Engineers, Interior Designers, Bankers and now IT folks. I have spent four years recruiting in corporate for one of the top ten banks nationally and four years on the agency side; one of those was supporting the second largest parent agency in the world. I cannot guarantee you an… Continue

The letter you will get from "W" next week.

September 29, 2008

Dear Taxpayer and Concerned Citizen,

You are receiving this letter as you are the account holder of funds within an F.D.I.C. backed financial institution.

Over the weekend Congress and I worked together to solve what appeared to be the greatest threat to our economy in decades. This crisis would most assuredly have brought our nation to its knees in a matter of days – if not hours. We had to act quickly in order to insure our own freedoms and… Continue

Keeping Recruiting Costs "Down"

A thread over on ERE's Recruiting Leadership Forum asks the throngs Monday's question of the day, "How do you keep recruiting costs down?"

Naturally this begs a question: How many in recruiting really know and track the direct and indirect costs of talent acquisition?

How can you decrease what you don't know or track?

The Economy, How to set yourself up for Success when the Market Slows

Are you worried about the economy yet, and how it will affect your business? If not, you should be. I'm fortunate in that my focus, technology, has not slowed down, yet. It most likely will, eventually, but at least I'll be ready for it this time.

Back in 2001, coming off the fast and furious internet boom, we initially thought the slowdown was just a blip, a bump in the road that would quickly smooth out. This internet thing was just too big to go away, right?

Needless to say,… Continue

Making sense of all your information

If your like me you have an account on Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter, Twhirl, TalentBar, RecruitingBlogs, WirelessJobs, Plaxo, Jobirn, Doostang, Jobthread, Spoke, Naymz, and RecruiterRockstar. Those are just the websites, my membership in user groups probably doubles that. Logging into each and every one of these sites could be a full time job. True relationship building gets lost in an effort to be the most connected.

Is it quality or quantity we are after? Or both? I am… Continue

One Person CAN Make A Difference! (And Kudos To OnRec!)

I've had quite a few conversations over the last several years how it often appears that the same organizations seem to win recruiting awards year after year after year. Frankly, I think this is rightfully so - if you're better than the competition, you should win out. At the same time, I think that there should be a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for the consistently usual suspects :)

So this year, I noticed that OnRec was… Continue

HAVE YOU FOUND THAT ONE ONLINE PROGRAM YET?

By saying that I mean have you found a program that you feel so confident about that it is one of the few sites you want to share with everyone?

Does this program give you a start up bonus?

Does this program offer you many ways to earn?

Does this program have a community full of friendly helpful members?

Does this program offer you a forum full of great information?

Does this program offer you an e-book that explains how… Continue

Search String Creation - New Grad Search

If you want to target new grads, there are a couple of approaches you can use. One of the best ways is to target your search using the site: operator with the type of degree you want. Let’s say we want to find computer science-degreed new grads from Berkeley. We start off looking for resumes, cv’s, bios and other profiles. You can easily do this search in Google by using the similar ( ~ ) function....Continue

"Tough Choices or Tough Times," an interesting publication.

I recently attended an event and this publication was distributed to the attendees. It was written by the National Center on Education and the Economy. I found it interesting and thought you would too. Here is the link: http://www.skillscommission.org/pdf/exec_sum/ToughChoices_EXECSUM.pdf

Have a good day.
