While many states are passing laws requiring E-Verify, California appears to be going the opposite direction.

The Empoyment Acceleration Act of 2011 forbids California, as well as any of its cities, counties, and special districts, from requiring E-Verify,…

Halloween & Recruiting: Learning from your 10 year old self!

When I was growing up, there was not a holiday that I looked forward to more than Halloween.  Not only did I love thinking up a great costume and getting free candy but I always really enjoyed the Halloween route planning sessions the night before.

Every Halloween I’d go to one of my friends places (as they had a better neighborhood) and we’d map out the houses and areas we would hit up during the night.  After years of experience, we knew the houses that gave the “good”…

Seven Billion

The United Nations projects that the seven billionth person will be born today somewhere in the world. Our ever increasing population and the demands it creates for goods and services generates tremendous opportunities for companies of all sizes. Simply being ready to serve a wider audience, however, does not constitute the preparation necessary to compete in the new economy. You must eliminate, innovate, and automate aspects of your business to hone your competitive edge:

Detailed Job Descriptions are Critical

Author: Denise Bradford

Recruiter’s main responsibility is to find the perfect employee for a company.   So saying, “I need a SOX Expert with 3-5 years experience in the oil and gas industry” is not going to get you what you need!  Here are a few questions you should ask yourself when creating a great job description that will reward you with the person you need.

  1. What is the jobs purpose to…

If Business was a Contact Sport HR Would be in the Infirmary

Vince Lombardi said it best when he said“Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is”. It never ceases to amaze me that most HR people I meet are non-competitive when it comes to helping their business win and in applying HR strategies and policies. They use words like ethics and fairness to tell us why they are so restrained but really it’s a…

Recruiters - What if the one that got away came back?

Most of us have memories of the Good, Bad, and Ugly recruiting experiences related to great candidates who got away.  The painful memory of those great candidates that got away related to:  a predicted outcome; deception on their part; slow to move hiring managers; our (recruiter) missteps…and what else?  Maybe an Act of God would also fit.

How many…

Looking For Work? You Can Always Fight Pirates.

It goes without saying that the Marines are an excellent fighting force.  Be it the United States Marines or the  British Royal Marines, tens of thousands of dollars have gone into training so that these fighting units can be the most formidable in combat.

But then once the Marine is an ex-Marine, there is a question as to what to do with those skill sets.  Can't really use the harder core aspects in the typical office setting, lest one's fellow employees look askance at your crawling…

Am I Too Ethical To Be A Recruiter?

Well now, it's been a couple of years and my recruiting life is going along pretty good. Exceeding my numbers, gaining exclusive clients, having fun and thinking this is the best job and the best place I could ever work. We have monthly contests, quarterly contests, yearly contests; go on weekend retreats (with our spouses) to golf resorts and ski resorts (depending on the time of year) for morning training meetings and golf outings or skiing or even just laying around the pool in the…

CV Search+

Further to our earlier blog titled The Brilliant CV which outlined the basic requirements for a great CV, there are a couple of further useful observations which are worth sharing with all prospective candidates. Do LinkedIn members view Klout scoring as a credible measure of individual influence and reach? Let's ask!

I was fortunate to read through today's RBC Daily Update to find the subject matter addressed the Klout score as a measurable credential. I had recently thought about this subject myself. Subsequently, I launched a poll on LinkedIn (and shared it on FaceBook) just a few days ago. This poll was targeted at assessing the real influence that Klout scoring has among career-minded professionals who are somewhat active on LinkedIn, Twitter, and FaceBook.

Many of us strive to…
