You thought those interview questions were tough…Try these

Not sure how everyone else feels about the many posts and articles circulating on “tough interview” questions. What I have noticed is that many seem to have a bit of a rinse and repeat rhythm to them – same questions reworded. Here are a few of the commonly suggested tough interview questions:

  • What would you say are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?
  • Why should we hire you?
  • Give us an example where you encountered a disagreement with a…

Social Media Recruiting Doesn't Take a Vacation! Grandma's Chicken Soup #29

Sorry I missed you guys last week.  I took a little vacation from Grandma's Chicken Soup, but I am here this week with an extra serving of online recruitment headlines from the past two weeks.

I know a lot of HR/Recruiting professionals are on vacation in August and why not? We all need a break some time. But, September is upon us and the…

Mobile apps for job boards: a scorecard for job seekers

Note to recruiters: I wrote this for job seekers, but I think you'll find it interesting.

If you’re part of the 97% of the US population with a cell phone, you most likely use it for more than phoning. And if you’re part of the burgeoning subset with an iPhone, Android, or other smartphone, I can guarantee that you use it for all sorts of serious (and silly) stuff.

Looking for work (or keeping your fingers on your neck of the employment market) is possible on a smart…

The Consultative Conundrum

Ask most salespeople and they’ll tell you they engage in consultative selling. When asked how they accomplish this or ways in which they measure the effectiveness of their consultative approach, you’ll often get a convoluted answer at best. The reality is consultative selling has become another of the buzz words that people apply to a sales process that is anything but fully consultative.

To test if you are being a consultant versus just selling, try the following:

Random Thoughts On Recruiting - We Are The New Japan

This is a great and quick look at where I think we are right now in regard to business conditions. For some time I have thought that we are much like Japan, 20 years later. They peaked in 1989 with a huge bubble and an older population, way too much leverage. 22 years later, there has been no real recovery from that. Not a depression, just a long malaise.

We peaked in '07. I don't think we have gone through any real deleveraging yet. To me it looks like we have a long road ahead,… Continue

Achieving Organizational Alignment – Getting all employees to move in the right direction

Achieving organizational alignment is a strategic HR activity that can deliver significant benefits to an organization. Alignment is more than ideal state. It is imperative to ensure the organization is successful in getting all employees to move into the same direction, to achieve the vision of the organization.

Alignment is one of the power words in an organizational change consultant’s toolkit. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t use or refer to alignment.

Some years ago, I…

Thanking Those Who Help Candidates...Presenting Foster Williams

Have you ever seen a resume so bad or a candidate doing something so foolish that you wanted to blurt out something that had more obscene than non-obscene words?  Of course you have, but if you took the time to provide feedback on every bad resume or poor interview, no work would get done.  While most of us don't have the time to do this, I wanted to publicly recognize someone who does.  His name is Foster Williams. Foster actively assists…

Sourcing and searching the variables.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sourcing and searching the variables.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As some of you read in my post on research, using that research to improve your

search strings and sourcing is very important. You will lock yourself into a very small pool of candidates if you do not use the variables.

variables = changeable-for purposes of sourcing it means another word or set of words that will garner the same type of candidates ex “HP…

Invest In Ourselves!

There’s no sense in denying it, these are difficult times economically. Unemployment is stubbornly high, our fractious government can’t seem to agree on how to address our economic troubles, the global economy is in peril, and every day brings more dispiriting news. Some argue that large companies, sitting on huge stockpiles of cash, will be the answer once consumer demand rebounds but how will it rebound with so many people unemployed and with wages for the employed stagnant or receding?…

First Round Interview? No, First Round Impressions

Preface: This post is written less as my opinion and more as a culmination of all the feedback (use cases) some four thousand high-end technology professionals have given me over the past three plus years.

We are in one of the tightest, if not the tightest candidate markets since, well…forever. More open positions than qualified candidates and new companies sprouting up every day (like the dot com). That said, the technical community has maintained a very high bar…

Keep Your Head in the Game and If Necessary: Adapt

The eyes and the mind can play tricks on you and on your ability to accomplish a days task successfully. Case in point; look at the picture to the left and make a note of what you see…..do you see the black dots? Are they there or is it just in your mind? Stuff like this happens on a daily basis when we allow the mind to wander—> the eyes will see what the mind reveals, and you will believe this as fact. How does this factor into the work day? Simple…

You make a “To-Do”…

The Power of Your Recruiting Social Networks - Offline and Online

There is power in your direct network.  In fact, every individual, every person you may come in contact with is a potential business partner.  Don't get me wrong, you must tread carefully and watch your privacy and your very safety, but when one begins with the end in mind - career management, long term goals, financial considerations, filling new requisitions, and on and on and on, one must be aware how valuable a network trully is.

The larger one's network the more apt…

Are candidates running TO your opportunity or AWAY from something else?

“I want people who are coming TO us, not running away from something bad.  You know, bad job, bad boss, they’re unemployed; I can find those people no problem.  I want people who WANT to work here.”

Interesting words spoken by one of my hiring managers during a recruiting meeting.  I was fresh off my blog “job seeking is a lot like dating” so naturally I’m picturing the goofs on The Bachelorette always running to each other… bad visual.  Then I really thought about what he…
