"For what it's worth"

Initial thoughts from a Corporate Recruiter on Monster’s new product announcement:

“There’s something happening here, what it is ain’t exactly clear”

My Tweet stream was inundated on Saturday evening by an onslaught of messages heralding the new job seeker application developed by Monster on the Facebook platform, “BeKnown”. Because I follow several Monster Marketing folks, this wasn’t much of a surprise. The surprise was the “canned” messages being…

#BeKnown: #Monster Creates Potential Competition to #LinkedIn

BeKnown is good news! There are lots of posts out there with facts and screen shots, so I skip that.

Here some initial thoughts.

1) It’s fantastic to see potential competition to LinkedIn; Moster has been one of the few big players capable of that. LinkedIn’s quality has been hurt by not having…

How to impress at your next job interview

One of the MOST stressful parts of looking for a new job is the interview!

If you have been successful in getting shortlisted to the interview stage, you need to take just as much care (if not more!) of how you handle the interview. The interview is not just about the actual appointment itself - your performance at the interview is what can make or break you!
The interview is your opportunity to shine! It is your chance to showcase your skills, abilities and your…

We’re Attending the SHRM Conference — Will You Be There?

The Society for Human Resource Management’s 63rd Annual Conference and Exhibition is being held from June 26-29, 2011, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. eEmpACT is very proud to be participating in this event, as we agree with SHRM that the next two years will be a turning point in the HR profession and a vital time for the recovery of our nation.

SHRM says that this year’s conference will feature the largest number of practitioners, strategic…

… More about Difficult People

In our newsletter last month, we published “Poison Control” – an article on how to deal with toxic individuals in the workplace (e-mail me for a copy).  This week, Peter Cappelli published an article called Managing the Difficult Employee, in which he points out that there are a lot of…

Healthcare – One of the Healthiest Job Markets in the Country

Healthcare jobs are hot, and the call for qualified candidates shows no signs of slowing. Salaries are also on the rise for many of the most in-demand positions in the industry, according to the “2011 Compensation Data Healthcare” survey results from Compdata Surveys.

If you’re a healthcare recruiter in the United States, this is good news for you, also. With the need for healthcare positions to be filled, demand is predicted to be strong for the foreseeable future. With salaries in…

Compel IT candidates to accept your offer by making a personal connection

Here’s a news flash – finding top IT talent is becoming increasingly difficult as budgets loosen up and employers are desperate to fill positions requiring high demand skills.  The problem seems to be that there are more jobs (believe it or not) than qualified candidates (who are actively looking for a career change).

Finding top talent can be a bit challenging in today’s market, but that’s what IT recruitment agencies like…

Space: The Final Frontier...of Your Resume

You’ve carefully outlined your responsibilities as obviously as possible in a clean, easy on the eyes format. You’ve spent hours carefully quantifying the results of your years of hard work on a position-by-position basis, highlighting one carefully worded, attention-getting achievement after another. Every single letter on your resume is perfectly in place; it is a marvel of precision phraseology worthy of a Pulitzer (or a Polk, if you’re Bill O’Reilly).

And it’s a quarter page or… Continue

Can Lara Croft or Gordon Freeman get you more hires?

The launch last week with much fanfare in the USA (and a lot less elsewhere) of the new Marriott game on Facebook raises an interesting question, perhaps not quite the characters in the title, but can online games get you more hires? Does it inspire new candidates who would not have previously have thought of a career in your sector, does it help self select out those that are thinking of your company or sector or is…

Want To Prove You Are a Professional? Start With Your E-mail Address

You look up one day and realize that you have been thrown back into the job market.  Suit (and tie) ready?  Check.  Updated resume available electronically and printed on nice sturdy 100% cotton paper where you can actually see the fibers?  Check.

So you’re prepared.  However, have you checked the professionalism of your e-mail address?

Maybe the e-mail address is a small priority to some in the grand scheme of things since there are so many other concerns when prepping…

Bullhorn Reach – The Future of Social Recruiting

“Social Recruiting – Social recruiting is when companies and recruiters use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and and other social media sites to source and recruit candidates for employment.”

You can always count on About.com for the most simplistic definition for everything in life. Thanks to CEO Stewie Griffin and CFO Elmo, we now know the true essence of this…

If You Build It - They Will Come

I loved "Field of Dreams" a movie that spanned so many different interesting topics and life parallels that even to this day I watch to put myself in a reflective mood.  I have been thinking about the ever-changing, and ever-evolving staffing landscape - like a field of dreams - where individuals find their work, eager companies snatch up amazing talent, and vehicles of change drive life's deals and closes - not to mention an ever changing web and technology landscape.  When my career began…

Coughlin’s Laws and Recruiting

Ok, bunch of you guys are wondering what the hell I’m talking about...so, quick history lesson. In 1988, Tom Cruise starred in “Cocktail” the story of a “talented NY bartender”. Well, I’m not sure I agree with that but this movie is the essence of 1980’s bad cinema....and I LOVE it! One of the main antagonists is Doug Coughlin who’s basically a drunk jerk.

That being said, he has the "laws" that he lives by and is generally obnoxious about them. Pretty much throughout the movie… Continue

Taking the Stress Out of the Salary Discussion

It is interesting how much stress there can be over the salary discussion in the interview process.  If you ask me, it is the one question that should be easy to answer because it is factual.  The recruiter should ask, “How much do you make?”  And the candidate can answer with a number.  Easy, right?

When we are socializing or networking we don’t talk about money.  We are very comfortable asking someone what they do for a living, but we would never say, “Wow, that sounds interesting. …

THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT! How to get a job in a tough market

With the market as tough as it is, I often receive calls from students or young people in property asking how they can get their first job, or transition into a new area where they might not have experience.  I give the same advice over and over again, but not many seem to take it. Applying to jobs on seek is not going to get you a role when you have no experience. In this market, you need to be prepared to do work experience (often for free) and the only way to secure these positions is…

Advice: When and How...

There has been some discussion going around recently through LinkedIn, and some other sites about the etiquette of “advice”: namely, when should you give it and when should you charge for it; when you should offer it freely and when you should just say ‘no’ and politely remove yourself from the situation.

I’ve had some time to think this through, and I think a sound strategy is to know the difference between an opinion wanted, and an opinion/request for guidance or assistance. You… Continue

Wild and Crazy Resumes

Most recruiters are still trying to get candidates to switch to bullet points instead of paragraphs, and use one font consistently.

One sector that has gone way beyond bullet points is the media business.  Just for the fun of it, take a look at this article 7 Ingenious Resumes That Will Make…
